Let's discuss Doom Metal!
Let's start out with our favorite Doom Bands!
Mine are: Reverend Bizarre Cathedral Pale Divine Candlemass |
I'm new to doom metal. I recently got Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. It's amazingly good. I need more. So I guess my favorite doom metal band is Candlemass only because they're the only one I've heard besides Black Sabbath (If you consider them doom)
Before I ever heard Doom Metal my speculation would be that it would be scary atmospheric type metal, such as The Call of Ktulu by Metallica or something like that. When I got a Candlemass album off the Daily Upload I realized it was nothing like that, and it's just a drony rock-based form of metal. Not really my cup of tea.

You obviously have never listened to any funeral doom. |
Wanna gimme some bands? I would love an extremely dark melodic band.
Toss Saint Vitus into the mix as well. Wino was probably the best vocalist they had out of the three.
I thought that Epicus Doomicus Metallicus made a rather "doom" atomsphere.

If that is a Candlemass album, I've only heard the new self-titled one. |
I dont know if Novembers Doom is Doom Metal but I like those guys. It kind of reminds me of Opeth at times.
Isole is definitely the best i've ever heard.
Solitude Aeternus
Witchfinder General Reverend Bizzare Swallow the Sun Saturnus Those would be my doom-metal picks. |
I only know a coupe of Doom bands. I like Candlemass, and I enjoy Nortt if I'm in the mood for Funeral Doom.
Ive been hearing alot about Swallow The Sun lately.
Hmm, I googled it, checked some of it out, and it seems pretty cool. Sounds kinda like a marriage of Sabbath and ...something I don't know right now.
Sabbath did kind of start the whole thing. I don't peticularly like Sabbath though...
Candlemass are amazing.
Not sure if they're doom, but Acid Bath and Crowbar sound very doomy and also kick ass. Oh and Black Sabbath of course, duh. |
Mourning Beloveth are probably my favorite, followed closely by Solitude Aeturnus.

Sabbath is not a doom band.
They were a humungous influence on it. Electric Funeral and Black Sabbath both sound pretty doomy to me.
Oh, they did influence it. Witchfinder General, for example, borrows from some of their work. But nonetheless, Sabbath were not doom metal in the sense we know it today.
Saint Vitus IS good doom.
But good doom means a bit stoner. Even Kyuss, Josh Homme's old band is pretty doom-y. |
Paramaecium would probably be one of the doomiest of the doom metal bands, to be honest: extremely funereal, VERY slow, incredibly, obsessively dark, and very beautiful. The only "problem" is that they identify with a Christian mindset, and their drummer, Jayson Sherlock, shares duties with them and with the Christian speed-death band Mortification. And they're Australian. \m/
Anybody who's curious can check out my gushing review of their album "Within the Ancient Forest." :D |
I'm a relative n00b to doom metal, although I love what I've heard from it: Agalloch, Candlemass, Isole - all great stuff. Anyone have any recommendations for what to check out next?
I like most styles of doom, but overall my favorite is probably the traditional and epic. Funeral Doom is great, but unless it's night and I'm in the mood, I'll usually put something else on.
