I'm not that familiar with (in terms of actually listening to) Opeth, though I did just order my first album by them.
Opeth - Silhouette - 3:07 Starts with a piano. I love piano in songs, usually, but there's something odd about the tone of this one. Time will tell whether it ends up annoying me or not. Piano speeds up around 0:45, playing spiralling flourishes moving up the piano, which is pretty cool. After that..I can't really describe what's going on. Mainly because I'm not so familiar with piano terms. Basically, there's some fast, complicated playing - I don't love it, but it's fairly impressive. Around 1:55, higher keys are being played over the lower notes; comparable to lead and rhythm guitar. This I prefer to the all-out "rhythm piano" of before, if you get what I mean. The whole thing sounds like it's just about to get beautiful as only a piano can..and then the song stops more or less dead at 3:00. 7/10 It was good, and obviously an interlude between other tracks. The beginning annoyed me because of the off-sounding piano, and the middle (for the most part) annoyed me because of all lower keys; the end was starting to be something I could really like, but stopped too early. It was still all well and good though, hence the 70%. Would I listen to more of the same band? Yep. Awaiting Blackwater Park any day now. Songs; Axis of Advance - Primeval Expansion (death/black metal - nice use of Saving Private Ryan samples) Lykathea Aflame - To Become Shelter and Salvation (technical death/grind) Sceptic - Pathetic Being (technical death) Gandalf - One More For the Dead (imagine a death metal AC/DC) Immortal - Solarfall (black metal) If you've heard them all, just say; I should be able to find something you haven't heard. |
Edit: nevermind i forgot this computer has no soundcard in it. Too bad i packed up my laptop already, and my good computer i had to break down. Stupid germany
Bartender, if i forget, send me axis of advance when i get to germany |
I'll make a note of it.

Bump, and a couple of non-metal songs (apologies to any rock fans who might've been scared off).

whaddya know?!? its fastball. theres not much to say. you have one simple verse with one simple riff and one simple riff with the same lyrics repeated. definitely filler. i'll give 'em kudos for writing it, though. 2/10. WOULD I LISTEN TO MORE OF THE SAME BAND? no. just... no. songs: the doors- the end led zeppelin-black dog metallica-call of ktulu tool- schism primus-eleven uhh... thats all i can think of. |
Man... I wanna dibs, but I've heard them all, except for Primus Eleven. And I can't find it. Just gimme some time to find it.

Led zeppelin - Black Dog
first some guitar, and some sort of a scratching sound. at 0;06 all sounds stop, and make place for vocals. at 0:12 the rest kicks in again, and it sounds really feel good, bit like SKA ( I guess) 0:53 the drumming gets heavier. some silence, just vocals, than the rest kicks in again, this goed on for a while. 1:28 vocals sound very hollow, as if you hear a choir. after this, the structure of the song changes. 2:50, a 'ow yeah' part 3:25 the hollow vocals again. after that a guitarsolo, nice rhhytm being drummed on the background during the solo. when the solo stops, so does the song. - the song has a very SKA like sound, thus very happy. - gotta love the solo. don't know what else to say  but I liked the song would I listen to more of Led Zep? already doing ;-) 8/10 songs: Katatonia - Tonight's Music. (doom metal) minisrty - Land of rape and honey (industrial metal) Dream Theater - hollow years. (prog metal) Symphony X - in the dragon's den (prog metal) porcupine tree - wedding nails [great instrumental] (prog rock-ish) cheers |

dibs (i'll make the review as soon as I get home, I'm at work, right now)
|
^^ You only have a 2 hour dibs, or it will be revoked, I'm afraid. Otherwise people would be making dibs all over the place, and it wouldn't get done for hours.
|
well, then.. guess i'll have to revoke, since i'm 4 hours ago from home, i'm still at work... :\ I was wishing to listen to Porcupine tree and review it.. seems i can't now! ARRRRR
|
well... but if i'm home and it's undibbed, i Will review it, (hopefully!!!)

Symphony X - In The Dragon's Den
The only experience I have with this band is TerminalH Sean's videos, and those are great, so I am expecting some good stuff. Drum solo starts the song off before we enter a fast paced "proggy" riff. Vocals and synth enter. I like his voice, its not as high pitched as most prog bands and he is skilled. The drummer impresses me, he throws in some cool double bass sections which I love. In the background the guitars are playing a cool riff, though its very stereotypical. Some pinch harmonics in the background help with the variety though. Woah in comes the arpeggio section now, very fast and very cool. It goes into a double solo with synth and guitar at the same time. Back to the guitar, Mr Romeo sure is skilled. I don't know who the synth player is but he is also good. The song contains about 4-5 solo's before the vocals enter again. Song fades out with a calm synth effect. Hmm, very impressive playing from all instruments but its not something I'd listen to. 6/10 or 7/10 because of those cool arpeggios. Ensiferum - Tale of Revenge (Heroic Folk Metal) In Flames - Man Made God (Melodic Death) Dragonforce - My Spirit Will Go On (Speed/Power metal) Opeth - Benighted (Ballad, but usually Prog Death Metal) |
