Nu-metal = New Urban Metal
~A very popular sub-genre that sometimes has hip-hop influences.~ |
sure man,
Goth Metal = Goth metal fuses the bleak, icy atmospherics of goth rock with the loud guitars and aggression of heavy metal, finding the middle ground between the two styles in a melodramatic sense of theater and lyrical obsessions with religion and horror. Prior to the emergence of goth rock as a post-punk genre, the vaguely medieval, minor-key sounds of metal bands like Rainbow, Dio, and Judas Priest had been described as "gothic," but true goth metal is always directly influenced by goth rock -- ethereal synths and spooky textures are just as important as guitar riffs, if not moreso. Thus, goth metal frequently holds appeal for listeners on both sides of the equation. Goth metal first emerged during the early to mid-'80s, centered around Los Angeles' so-called "death-rock" scene headed by Christian Death. Many goth metal bands have since sprung up in both America and Europe, with the tongue-in-cheek Type O Negative breaking out to a wider alternative metal audience in the '90s. During the latter half of that decade, goth metal also proved to be an important influence on black metal bands searching for new ways to darken their sound. Key Artists: Christian Death - 80s to 90s Paradise Lost - 80s to 00s Type O Negative - 90s to 00s My Dying Bride - 90s to 00s Moonspell - 90s to 00s Anathema - 90s to 00s Lake of Tears - 90s to 00s Theatre of Tragedy - 90s to 00s Lacrimosa - 90s to 00s Key Albums: Atrocities - Christian Death Jesus Points the Bone at You? - Christian Death Shades of God - Paradise Lost Gothic - Paradise Lost Bloody Kisses - Type O Negative Icon - Paradise Lost Turn Loose the Swans - My Dying Bride Draconian Times - Paradise Lost Wolfheart - Moonspell Eternity - Anathema Like Gods of the Sun - My Dying Bride Crimson Cosmos - Lake of Tears Velvet Darkness They Fear - Theatre of Tragedy World Coming Down - Type O Negative Elodia - Lacrimosa there you go NickyHIMfan
Did you perchance copy that off of allmusic.com? |
nah it's mp3.com. i advertised it earlier in the thread because so many peole wanted to know the genres by definition. even after i posted that one saying it's a good place for information and overviews of genres and artists, i got requests to explain some more:
Quote: Originally Posted by cure_for_cancer17 Goth Metal i'd be happy to post an explanation for any one of these if anyone wants (except of course symphonic as it's already been done in this thread) Can I get an explanation of this? And a few band examples? :)
|

I'll be ****ed before System Of A Down is classed the same as Linkin Park.
Linkin Park is just emo with a bitch load of distortion. And add Dimmu Borgir to the list of Dark Metal. Nice list otherwise. |
dimmu borgir aren't dark metal. they are black metal. dark metal is a sort of gothic or doom.. i'm not sure..
|
Very good, i am glad someone took the time to do this. I respect you for trying to keep an un biased opinion. Also, thanks for stating that ther is a difference between satanic and anti-christian, And also for stating that death metal and black isnt all satanic, There are many goood chrisitain black death and thrash meat bands. Living Sacrifice, Extol, lengsel, Zao, norma jean
Paradise Lost - 80s to 00s
Paradise Lost in the 80's? They began in the very very late 80's but their 1st real work was 1990.
Shades of God - Paradise Lost Gothic - Paradise Lost Icon - Paradise Lost Draconian Times - Paradise Lost
:thumb: (Feels good about himself) |
That's because Korn are the ultimate nu-metal band, and they're so "heavy" compared to most other wonders of modern rock.
Korn.......are an absolutely appalling "band". Number one...they invented b a s t a r d nu-metal. Number two.....awful whiny vocals. Number three......rattling bass that doesn't make a note. Number four.....Drop-arse tuning. Number five...Poor musicianship. Number six.....Rattly guitars and rap....terrible combination. Finally number seven.....I was expecting A.D.I.D.A.S. to be a decent song, because of some hype. Turned out to be ****e. |
yo all metal is crap
OI F.U.C.K.F.A.C.E.!! Metal is mostly ****e (apart from slayer (who rock) and pantera are ok...sabbath are awesome), but fukk ur mother in the arse why don't you??? Snoop dogg is the ugliest, ****tiest rapper ever!! HAH!!! |
I'll be ****ed before System Of A Down is classed the same as Linkin Park.
Linkin Park is just emo with a bitch load of distortion.
In a world where Six Feet Under can be put in the same genre as Immolation, System of a Down can be put in nu metal with Linkin Park (who, by the way, are not emo, at all). |
what about dimmu borgir
|
Dimmu Borgir are symphonic black metal. I'm pretty sure that was pointed out on the last page.

awsome list of genres. the only other one i can think of is Industrial Metal. which is metal with other sounds and a guy on keybored adding stuff. like Fear Factory, who are my favourite band. try to get some of their stuff if u havent. :thumb: |
well, i do feel you did a great job. however i feel the bands you labled under each genre should have been defined so mainstreamists do not make a direct connection of S.O.A.D. and Slipknot. Not to mention i dont think theyre nu Metal. S.O.A.D. is more creative than Limp Bizkit will ever be with or without Wes. Slipknot is not nu metal. the only reason they dont have solos on earlier albums is because Ross Robinson is not a real open-minded producer. he cut out micks shred-solos so its not slipknot. sorry bout the ranting man. got too carried away. nice job respectively,

Great List Few thing I don't agree with
THe list was a very good one but I have a couple of opinions maybe against what other people might think.
First: Melodic Death Metal- Maybe a sub-genre of death metal but more or less something that shouldn't exist or even be a plausable idea to think of. These bands took a type of music that was founded on being fast agressive and less melodic. These bands are melodic, don't have the gutteral vocals, and zero blast beats. Now doesn't that make them heavy metal? You have the black dahlia murder witch is probably as close to death metal you can get and still be melodic, but they have no singing parts, blast beats, and no soft or acoustic break downs to me thats death metal. In flames a very good band don't get me wrong but acoustic songs, they even sing about butterflies, this does not describe a death metal band in any sense of the term a heavy metal band all the way. No one has yet metioned what all these sub-genres actually mean to metal. You see a million bands a hundred different types of metal. This is why metal has been around for so long and will be around for a long *** time to come. Metal has the ability to change and become something totally different and still be metal and retain its aggression. Metal remains the only type of music where it will always take a lot of talent to play and can't be faked or done generically. Not without an embarrissing turn out. Not like pop punk where you see a bunch of hardly talented bands making money off ****ty music that you can learn to play in a month. Very good list though good to see people can still tell what goos metal is. |
Hmmm..I didn't read all of the entries, but was Goat Metal mentioned? I think it's the most retarded thing over..and home to Kentucky, go figure.
Anyways, some pretty awesome descriptions---nice work. |
very good thred im new at metal and now i know much more about metal thanks !!!!!!!!
I've always said Tool was their own genre anyway :D
so if alot of bands in the future started taking after tools style it would probably start a new genre of music. im really just saying this cuz im not sure and want to see what ppl will tell me about it cuz i know i have no clue what im talking about |
@no leaf clover: so what is goat metal?
