Yeah neither do I anymore.

No perks for me.

FunkMetalBass 10-20-2009 09:42 AM
I never use compressors live, I abhor them.

In a studio setting if an engineer wants to use them in the mixing stages then that's fine, that's his yard, but I just don't want that kind of thing on my sound.

Micing a bass cab for recording it's good to take a DI signal and use a mic, more than one mic is better because it gives you more options in the mixing stage.
What's wrong with the sound of a compressor?

I guess, if I were playing with a pick and a lot of treble/high mids, the compressor would be disgusting to my ears too (in fact, I remember that I hated the way it sounded when I slapped). But for fingerstyle playing, I think it tightens it up just enough and sounds decent. It's not like I'm really in a position to be extremely critical about my live bass tone - not in a hard rock band with two guitarists playing small clubs with poopty PAs and soundguys that can't mix all that well.

I've never cared for the sound of my mic'd cabs - probably because I use some Carvin cabs that don't do much to color my sound.

FunkMetalBass 10-20-2009 09:43 AM

I bought a 4-space rack last night, and it doesn't fit my amp. I'm pretty sad, actually. :upset:

The amp has these handles that stick out of the front and they are too long to fit inside the rack case. Handles are welded on and cannot be removed. :(

gaslight 10-20-2009 09:47 AM

I find compressors just get in my way when I'm playing, I'd rather control my dynamics myself.

I have a Digitech Compressor/Sustainer but I only really use it to generate specific things for home recordings and whatnot. Live I just don't want to bother with one, I just take my bass and plug in and that'll do. Just a personal preference not an objective denunciation of compressors or anything.

That's a bummer about the rack dude :(. Refund, store credit?

BenJammin 10-20-2009 09:47 AM

The last couple of songs my band has recorded, we've mic'd my amp. It sounds a lot better.

gaslight 10-20-2009 09:55 AM

Yeah, the best option when recording is to end up with DI tracks and mic'ed tracks, that way you can choose which to use later rather than not having options.

Recorded an album recently with my head DI'd (pre-EQ) and two microphones on the cab, sounds dynamite in the control room really looking forward to the mixing stages.

I like to control dynamics too, but the sound guys apparently don't care for it. Meh, no skin off of my nose.

I can refund it for sure, but I really liked the look, feel, weight, and price of the SKB Roto Rack. I may not get my 10% off coupon back, though. :upset:

I just can't see having 3 bass tracks simultaneously recording.

gaslight 10-20-2009 10:15 AM

There's like over 40 tracks on the desk so it won't hurt it.

The idea is not to keep them all in the end product, but each one will capture different nuances of the sound, especially the microphones will respond differently towards your low and high end, and you can pick from between more options to get a better capture of the sound. Tasty stuff.

FunkMetalBass 10-20-2009 10:19 AM

Oh, so you don't merge them together in the end?

gaslight 10-20-2009 10:27 AM

Nah, merging them together would be pretty nasty 'cause you get phase issues from the microphones and it would probably be a muddy sticky mess.

FunkMetalBass 10-20-2009 10:34 AM
Nah, merging them together would be pretty nasty 'cause you get phase issues from the microphones and it would probably be a muddy sticky mess.
Okay, that's what I figured.

I've never recorded in a professional setting that would allow more than 12 tracks at a time, so I've always recorded with only one bass track. Damnit, I might have to start caring about my cabs and their sound for studio use.

gaslight 10-20-2009 10:42 AM

Worth experimenting :).

But it doesn't have to be done that way all the time, it was a pretty luxurious effort for the bass on that occasion. It's more important to be able to sound good just dropped in with a DI than having to go to all fussin' every time. Just nice to do it sometimes.

Sounding good with one track to the bass is totally doable, hell, the Funk Brothers used to record about 8 people onto the same track at once.

FunkMetalBass 10-20-2009 10:51 AM

No wonder Johnny April (Staind) uses cheap $400 stock basses...he's running through a $10,000 rig...

Good God...I'd hate to move and transport all of that...

Showed up today. Still on the A Side, but it's sounding excellent.

Album art suggests some sort of lighter alternative/ambient. Maybe?

BenJammin 10-20-2009 11:14 AM

It's minimalistic beat-driven electronic music.

Holy flirking schnit.

BenJammin 10-20-2009 11:34 AM

I've also got 7 more albums in the mail.

I started the year with 0 vinyl LPs and I'm now sitting at ~55 + incoming.

gaslight 10-20-2009 11:35 AM

Awesome dude.

I promised myself one new record a month when I got my vinyl player but my budget hasn't allowed me to keep my promise :(.

Thanks a lot, me.

BenJammin 10-20-2009 11:37 AM

Haha. Oh no. :(

Do you have a used shop in town? Even when I was unemployed, I would still pick up something every now and then if it was under $10 or something.

Also helps that I acquired 12 for free a few nights ago from a friend.

Still, I shudder to think of what I've spent this year on vinyls.

gaslight 10-20-2009 11:39 AM

Yeah there's a good second hand record shop in town and also some quite decent first hand places, I have to go in to the city for most of them though. It's only about a 30 minute train ride if I get the express but I don't seem to go in to the city much these days.

Pride of my record collection is the Trio Of Doom record :).

BenJammin 10-20-2009 11:42 AM

I had to look that up, haha. Nice, man.

I don't really have anything "prized." Most of my stuff is a motley of different things. I recently got an old pressing (not sure if original or not) of Pink Floyd's Dark Side, though, which is killer. I've got a couple of Beatles albums too, that are in decent shape (good enough to listen to/no skips).

gaslight 10-20-2009 11:43 AM

Haha I don't think it's like, worth anything in terms of being prized it's just my favourite.

It doesn't have a huge amount of competition I've only got like, a half dozen records I've bought and some I got from my Dad's old boxes.

I want Wayne Shorter's Mahjong on vinyl I would adore that. I'd like maybe Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers'Ugetsu too. There's a lot of jazz ones I'd like when I have the rubes.

BenJammin 10-20-2009 11:50 AM

I'm trying to get some more jazz into my collection. Especially during winter, I listen to a lot more jazz.

A lot of my stuff right now is more instrumental (post-rock), folky/singer-songwriter, or just flat-out "rock" (of some form or another).

gaslight 10-20-2009 11:51 AM

I sure as **** wouldn't pass up having some Led Zep or The Who on vinyl.

BenJammin 10-20-2009 11:53 AM

Yeah, seriously. I've been keeping my eye open for some Zepp for a while now, but I figure it'll prolly cost me an arm and a leg if I find any, anyway.

gaslight 10-20-2009 12:07 PM

Indeed it's a shame.

Haha, awesome Mingus quote about his tune "My Jelly Roll Soul".

"It had nothing to do with Jelly Roll's music. I heard he was a pimp so I decided to relate myself to him - like I had a 'Jellyroll Soul' too."

BenJammin 10-20-2009 12:09 PM

wut?

I've got a Mingus album (Mingus Ah Um), but I haven't listened to it extensively.

gaslight 10-20-2009 12:14 PM

Just a quote of his about a tune. Jelly Roll Morton was a pianist.

Mingus is brutal genius.

BenJammin 10-20-2009 12:22 PM

I see, I see.

I'll give the album a proper listen someday.

gaslight 10-20-2009 12:24 PM

It's a nice album. He's got a lot of music out there it's pretty scary how much he wrote really.

FunkMetalBass 10-20-2009 12:58 PM

Is there a specific practice routine people use for jumping and running around while playing? Sheisse - some people are crazy.

FunkMetalBass 10-20-2009 01:20 PM

Good news: I may have found the 4-space rack that will house my amp and then I can return my SamAsh purchase, try to get my coupon bac, and buy the shallow rack for my effects from them.

I'll end up saving $80 this way. Sweet!

My room mate has Led Zeppelin I on vinyl. Never actually listened to it, but he's got it anyway.

Efrim 10-20-2009 01:53 PM

Actually, Ben, if you came here I could take you to the really good record store two blocks away from me.
You know, the one where I got a new Nocturama vinyl.

Nocturama?

My dad was showing me his record collection last night. All LZ, all Journey (including some rare japan-only release), and a bunch of other cool things that will probably be worth quite a bit in the next 30 years.

Spaceman Spiff 10-20-2009 04:15 PM

I'm really proud of this EP. I can't wait until it's totally done so I can put it up for listening and download.

I can tell you that it doesn't sound like Collapse... same line-up, though.

Ugh, Nocturama is one of my least favorite Nick Cave albums. Has a few good songs, but it's just so mediocre.

That said, I am definitely going to hit up a record shop with you next time.
