I hate Fender too. Always have. But, given that I do occasionally do temp bass work, I should probably have something Fender-esque in my arsenal. I'm going to sell my Fender to buy an SX and upgrade the pickups and electronics.

I'm also going to attempt my first-ever fret level today. **Gulp**

gaslight 09-03-2009 08:37 AM

I wouldn't call myself a Fender fan bass wise, I like their electric guitars though.

If money was no option, I'd have a few Fender basses just for the hell of it but otherwise I've got no wish to own one.

I actually quite like the look of the Aerodyne jazz and I'd get a Geddy if I could find one with a trans quilt maple top. I don't like their electronics at all, so I'd rather have a cheapo Fender knockoff with better electronics....or a Sadowsky or a Valenti.

fatbandit 09-03-2009 10:49 AM

I'm getting a Shuker JJ Burnel signature bass soon. Which is essentially the best bits of the two Precisions that JJ Burnel used put together in one bass. It is a smexual instrument. But I probably wouldn't buy a stock Fender when there are so many better options around. Especially at equivalent or better prices.

Gopherbassist 09-03-2009 11:09 AM

Man, I come back to Sputnik and the orange layout is gone. How are you guys doing?

Agreed.

Rough Price:

SX Jazz Copy = $150
SX Maple Blocked Neck = $50
DiMarzio UltraJazz Pickups = $105
Hipshot 4-string A-style (black)= $111
Hipshot ultralites + xtender (gotoh-style, black) = $180
Audere preamp = $180
Control plate + knobs (black) = $50
Pearloid pickguard = $50
___________________
Total = $876

Right around the cost of a Fender American Std. Jazz, with a cooler finish, all black hardware, better bridge, better pups, better preamp, ultra-lites and an extender key.

And the only thing you're sacrificing is a name and slightly better wood quality & construction, which is can be easily touched up by a $100 visit to a local luthier.

Modded SX Jazz is totally the way to go.

BenJammin 09-03-2009 11:22 AM

Or you could get a bass that plays fine out of the box.

Just saying.

fatbandit 09-03-2009 11:55 AM

I'm not talking about budget stuff. That SX would be a Mexican equivalent maybe, but not American. I'm just saying that for the list price of a new US Fender, I could get a Shuker Fender-a-like for around the same price, or slightly more. But it would be exactly how I wanted it. With things like Laklands and Sadowskys around too (especially at s/h prices), Fender have a lot of competition when it comes to their top of the line ranges.

BenJammin 09-03-2009 12:15 PM

Got any pics of the model, Chris?

Epidemechanical 09-03-2009 12:18 PM

Electronics aside, how much different are they really? Different headstock, different body wood, slightly different pocket size & thickness, and a better fret job (all of which I'd adjust anyways, and I've played Mexican Fenders with poor fret jobs).

That's the page on Jon's website about the JJ, Ben.

And uh... different basses feel and sound different, that's just fact. And you know it trollboy xD

Or I could save money to get a bass that sounds better and plays almost exactly the same (if not better).

fatbandit 09-03-2009 01:41 PM

Argh. The power amp I want is going on eBay in twenty minutes for a real good price, but I'm about £250 short. My current power amp is worth about £250. I need someone to buy and pay for my power amp in the next 20 minutes.

fatbandit 09-03-2009 02:13 PM

different strokes for different folks.
i really doubt he mastered the album

like i really really doubt he did

unless he owns like a real studio

putting a track into recording software and pushing the overall level up 3 dB isnt mastering

EQing a track in recording software isnt mastering
I really don't know exactly what he did because I wasn't there. He doesn't have a studio, but he has some pro gear. I'm not going to get into it because I don't have a clue.

BenJammin 09-03-2009 04:35 PM

Fail: you bought a netbook.

Spaceman Spiff 09-03-2009 04:43 PM

I'm thinking of buying my friend's Mac for $500. It comes with Cubase 4, which is apparently a $600 program. Strongly considering...

BenJammin 09-03-2009 04:52 PM

Unlikely. Considering Cubase 5 (the newest version) goes for $500, I doubt that Cubase 4 holds even a fraction of its original value. Worth maybe $250/300.

I'm pretty sure my friend just bought Cubase 5 and it cost him nearly $1000, from what I heard, anyway. It might be Cubase 4 LE that's on the computer.

I'm talking about the price on release, not after price drops.

BenJammin 09-03-2009 05:11 PM

If your friend paid $1000 for Cubase, he got ripped, dude. You can get it for $500 right off their website.

Well, I don't really know, it's just what I heard. That price may have been including whatever it may cost + taxes + shipping. I was told it was about $1000.

Mr. Pickle 09-03-2009 06:12 PM

You can get it for free from torrents, and only feel bad about it if you're a pussy.

Playing bass is like going to a fine wine tasting, if you do it, you're a fag.

Lucky, I'm jacking into the wifi for the restaurant below me.

I meant to quote you about your internet, not about netbooks.
