I got the 20".
I played the 22" and I couldn't hear that much difference in sound, so the 20" won because it's cheaper and means I don't have to buy a new, bigger cymbal case!

It's a great all round cymbal!
I play in very different bands, a Jazz quintet, an (80's style) emo band and a fast thrash hardcore punk band. And I can use this cymbal for them all!
16" won't make a good main crash, to be honest. At least a 17".

I'd look into the K Darks.
Well, my last main crash was 16", but ill look into 17". :) Thanks.

Anyone else?

oliv_da_skinmasher 12-17-2007 08:22 AM

He wants something dry and dark, and while the 2002s kick ***, they are really neither.

BY ALL

Drum Phil 12-18-2007 12:18 PM

Am i the only one who doesnt find 2002s interesting at all? :-/

Seafroggys 12-18-2007 12:31 PM

Probably.

I love my 2002 crash.

Drum Phil 12-18-2007 01:01 PM

To me they're just like new beats. Too meat + potatoes. A tad too bland :-/

Seafroggys 12-18-2007 01:03 PM

I honestly fail to see how any cymbal can be "too bland." Every cymbal has a flavor. Its like vanilla ice cream. How can people describe it as being "too bland" when it has a flavor that's just as strong and just as good as any other ice cream flavor?

Drum Phil 12-18-2007 01:12 PM

Might i point out here that i used the term "To me" to replace "In my opinion" :-/

New beats + 2002s dont have that special characteristic that makes me want to use them.

And your metaphore is just wrong. We're talking about personal taste and you're babbling on about flavour? An accurate metaphore would be "Why would anyone choose vanilla when their favourite flavour is Strawberry Cheescake"

Drum Phil 12-18-2007 01:33 PM

Also, i want a new ride.

Depending how much i prefer it to my main ride, it may be a left side or my plat may move to the left.

Qualities: 20", might consider something smaller if its good enough, but unlikely.
Dark. And i mean DARK. Not slightly dingier than bright.
Dryish but with a little wash.
PING. Nuff said.
Dont care about brand.

spirit 12-18-2007 01:48 PM

K Custom Special Dry Ride. Or the Dry Light, or just Dry. The Hybrid may also work.

Paiste may do something you'd like, but I'm not familiar enough with their range.

Drum Phil 12-18-2007 01:58 PM

They do. Unfortunately, dark energies are way out of my range :(
They do. Unfortunately, dark energies are way out of my range :(
That's the one.

Meinl not do something like that?

Drum Phil 12-18-2007 02:09 PM

Ive been looking at the 20" Byzance Dark Ride and 20" Byzance Heavy Ride

Imperial Star 12-21-2007 06:19 AM

Does anyone have any experience with the K Custom 20" heavy rides?
Does it have the nice K custom characteristics or is it just an expensive pingy ride?

Ollie The Drumming Legend 12-22-2007 05:48 AM

I didn't know they made a k custom heavy ride... there is a k heavy ride that is quite nice and a k custom ride which is also nice and not as dissimilar as you would think (not the k custom medium ride - they sound very different).

The k heavy ride is an expensive pingy ride, but because it is a high quality ride that imo sounds nice. Quite a few people on here own them unlike me so they can probably help you.

Hybrid would (I'd imagine) not be dry enough.. try the K custom dry ride; I own one and it is dark, v little wash, fairly dry. It's quite quiet though, and not being bright the ping doesn't cut as much as other dry/ping rides, which can be a bonus or a negative point depending on application, but yeah, give it a go. I'm personally thinking of getting a 2nd ride, one that is brighter and louder and "rockier"if you know what I mean (most rides are rockier than the k custom dry ride - although the dry ride is okay for rock type music dont get me wrong).

Does anyone have any opinions of the Sabian AA 20" china, good alternatives, etc.?

Imperial Star 12-22-2007 08:25 AM

oh yeah I meant the K heavy ride.
Whats the difference between K's and K Customs?

Drum Phil 12-22-2007 08:58 AM

Well i already own an Avedis Platinum Rock ride :)

Ollie The Drumming Legend 12-22-2007 11:14 AM

Should be good for you then I'd imagine - go try one out.

Orely 12-26-2007 01:06 PM

Well, I have heard some sample of the Sabian HHX Studio crash cymbal and I really like how it sounds. It's exactly the sound im looking for, however im a hard hitter and im wondering how much beating can this cymbal take.

Any help is appreciated.

Drum Phil 12-26-2007 01:42 PM

Due to it being a HHX its fairly thin. Thin cymbals can take more of a beating due to them having more flex in them than thicker ones.

sleepless 12-27-2007 07:58 PM

As the name Studio implies, it's more suited for light playing and miced situations.

I'm not 100% sure but you might be able to get close to the sonic characteristics with the Stage version if there is one. I wouldn't be sure without hearing it in person, and neither could you with an HHX.

As far as the Stage counterparts durability, I use an 18 AAX Stage Crash. One of the best cymbals I've ever purchased. I had it for almost two years before it broke.

The only reason why it broke is because I was lent out to my friend who was on tour with his local band, and he beats the piss out of cymbals on stage.

You could stick with the Studio and have it bend rather than break...either way with time you're going to end up with a ****ed up cymbal.

Aaron 12-27-2007 08:32 PM

If you're a hard hitter, go for bigger sizes rather than thicker cymbals. As Phil said, thin gives it flex, and by making the cymbal bigger there's more area to flex. When I play heavier stuff life I use 18" and 20" cymbals that are medium-thin or thin because of this.

Drum Phil 12-28-2007 11:44 AM

Yeah i use an 18" Thin and 19" Medium Thin when im only using the 2.

haggard2743 12-29-2007 12:04 AM

I'm looking for some new cymbals.
I like bright cymbals with a fastish decay. I like it to sound really explosive kinda like a large china. Any ideas?
