i think in a couple of songs mikeal kind of sounds like labrie from dream theater. has anyone else noticed this. and i think that they should lose the keyboards, or limit them severely. also, on the albums i liked it when mikeal did his own back up vocals.

no deliverance was brilliant. as is every opeth album. gr is good but could be way much better, i think they took away a lot traditional opeth sounds that make them opeth. i do agree with others here when they mention them signing with roadrunner did have a lot to do with how this album sounded.
|
I hate roadrunner. I think king dimond is on there and thats about it thats good. Slipknot is decent. CoF is okay.

Do people just ignore the fact that the album was written before Opeth had even chosen a new label? |

A lot of people dislike CoF, but I like most of their earlier work and some of their recent. Slipknot I just can't listen to. |

I agree that Cradle's old work was good, but I really cannot stand any of their new stuff. As for Slipknot, they have some pretty solid songs, a few decent ones as well, but the majority of their stuff is pretty craptastic gimmicky bull shit. |

I agree, its starting to sound like a broken record in here. |
I went a saw Opeth recently, and there's this story I just have to tell you guys.
So, I went to that show with a friend of mine who loves Opeth more than anything. So, on our way over to the show, he stopped by his family's video store (they own it and all, and it's a few blocks away from the venue) to grab some money for dinner. Now, they have this new girl working there. And while we were at the store she had this big sh*t eating grin on her face and said "So, you know they came in here?", which we knew was just total bullsh*t. There's no reason in hell for a big Swedish Death Metal band to come into this small time video rental store to get some videos for the one night that they're gonne be here. Well guy, guess what? The bitch wasn't lying. They also sell videos and they came in and bought a used copy of Sin City. And when they also saw that the store had copy of their DVD that they put out (Laminations), they decided to sign the DVD booklett for them. :D |
That is freaking awesome, I wish I could meet them :upset:.
|
id buy that dvd instantly, you could keep it or sell is on ebay for big $
|
Err....I met them at SOTU, if that counts....
No Lopez, though. :( The guitarist/vocalist of my band also met the whole band the last time they were here in Austin, lucky bastard....:upset: |

Yes, quite often. |
Do people just ignore the fact that the album was written before Opeth had even chosen a new label?
Sadly, yes. I've heard quite enough of this idiotic blame game. It's really quite sad. |
First, re: GR.......of course its a great album. Not Still Life or BW, the songwriting is just not up to that level. But on the other hand I'd say the addition of keys has let them get some very mean sounds, opened up some new ground. And I'd say that in general, they're melding the hellish and the serene much better than they used to, weaving in and out more smoothly.
NOW, saw them last night, first time, absolutely killer. Set: Baying of the Hounds When Bleak In My Time of Need The Grand Conjuration The Moor Deliverance Blackwater Park ENCORE: Demon of the Fall Nobody is tighter. Helluva performance. |
The drummer they're playing with is a titan, and clearly he's doing a masterful job dealing with Martin's complex sh*t......but boy I would have loved to see the real thing. This new guy pounds, where Lopez plays with much more subtlety.
Have seen much about Martin being sick, but one interview Mikael said he was depressed. What is the real deal here? |
Yet another reminder.
Anyone in Vancouver can head down to Scrape Records (17 west broadway) to meet Opeth at 7 pm for a pre-concert CD (among other things) signing. |
I just ordered the book Sunbird (1972) by author Wilbur Smith. David Isberg took the name, Opet from this book, later changing the name to Opeth to form the band. I gotta read this book, it looks really good. In this book, Opet is the city of the Moon.

Great. See you there. Describe yourself so I know. We should all get together, see Opeth and make a thread about it in the morning. |
