GG Allin is horrible. Hands down.

Today in photo this kid Keith sang the first verse of both "Straight Edge" and "Out of Step". It was pretty awesome in some ways that he sang it infront of our teacher like 6 times each with the swears and fully screaming, but it was really embaressing for me because I know those songs. He's a cool kid, but would be so much cooler if every phrase out of his mouth wasn't "Yeah, I'm pretty straight edge" or "Yeah, I'm pretty punk". He wears a jean vest with studs and a Clash back patch. It has Casualties written in Sharpie and a "XXX" across the back in studs. Also he was wearing a GG Allin shirt today.

GG Allin sucks.

first, GG allin is anything but straight edge, and he doesnt think hes punk at all. But i dont even know if your talking about GG allins songs, was it a song he made up?

AIRIC 10-12-2006 05:08 PM

I never said GG Allin was straight edge.

I was talking about Minor Threat. If you don't know Minor Threat you should skip that myspace horror punk you're looking for and go get some Minor Threat.

straight edge is dumb. Im all for people being sober and not using substances if they want to, but creating a stupid clique like straight edge is just retarded.

I have a friend who listens to those, but not out of irony. She really, really loves Elton John, because it's what she grew up with. Looking at her last FM top 10 can be really funny. It'll be like: moutain goats, casualties, leo kottke, george gershwin, elton john, screaching weasel. Just makes you go "wtf?"

POINTLESS5448 10-12-2006 06:22 PM

train in vain played in walmart today. made me happy.

(r)evolution 10-12-2006 06:26 PM

i cant remember what movie it was for, but the trailer had stand by me in it. It was pretty sweet.

Rise Me Up 10-12-2006 07:02 PM

(r)volution, to your comment about straight edge, i think it was something like "straight edge is dumb. Im all for people being sober and not using substances if they want to, but creating a stupid clique like straight edge is just retarded."

Now couldn't we say the exact same thing, like "ahhh i'm all for listening to what music you want, but creating a dumb little clique like punk is just retarded"...

Think about it.

Jessizzle 10-12-2006 07:06 PM

makes sense, but I don't only hang out with people who are punks. That's why i think its okay to be sober but to only hang out with straight edgers or to look down on non-straight edge kids is dumb. And i find the majority of straight edge kids i've met have been like that.

Rise Me Up 10-12-2006 07:10 PM

To Jono:
No. Straight edge was a huge movement. Now, I'm not edge but I don't think you should bash something you don't know anything about.

To (r)evolution:
Well, I know plenty who aren't. ;) You're just stereotyping them. I know some punks who do nothing but do drugs and spraypaint "RANCID" and "Up the PUNX" on a grocery store wall, but that doesn't mean every punk is like that.

yeah i guess it just depends on the kids. I've been unlucky enough to only meet the edge kids who make X's with their arms when you ask them for cigarettes.

The Punk scene has always been about unity. Everything Punk is "cliques" if you want to put it that way.
The Punk scene has always been about unity. Everything Punk is "cliques" if you want to put it that way.
theres a difference between unity and ONLY talking and associating with other punks.
theres a difference between unity and ONLY talking and associating with other punks.
Well, when you look at the fact that the unity existed to provide support and strength for social outcasts...no, it doesn't directly mean you only talk to other punks, but it's far from surprising or offensive or whatever.

yeah but you can be completely supportive of other social outcasts and kids who just dont fit in and also talk to friends who happen to not be punks. It's not like if you talk to a hip-hop kid you automatically want to split the scene apart and it's not like the only way you can be for unity is by not talking to anyone who doesn't own a black flag release.

Well here's the thing, a lot of social outcasts wash their problems away with drugs, so understandably sxe kids have no common point to touch on with those kids. But either way, I've never seen kids like who you describe. Sxe is such a scene thing currently that people feel popular being part of it anyways and are very social. I meet tons of kids at shows who are extremely friendly but would never take me up on an offer to catch a beer after.

Must just be toronto then, most teenage edge kids are a'ssholes, they beleive in this "Strength through Purity" crap and look down on kids who happen to drink or f'uck or smoke. I actually got spit on once for offering a kid a sip of my beer. It just consumes their lives so much then instead of being "My name is Joe and i happen to be straight edge" its "Im straight edge and my name happens to be joe". They're fanatics.

That's silly. The kids I meet are of the sort where I'd offer them a sip and they'd say "No thanks man, I don't drink." Pretty polite middle class type kids, you know?

If some sxe kid spit on me he'd probably be on the floor in a second because offering someone a sip of beer isn't insulting, spitting on someone is.

But individuality is always more important to me than group identity (hell, I don't group myself in any group tbh), but I know there are always kids who make their group identity their identity. I mean, look at how gangs work.

coheneran 10-12-2006 07:51 PM

I am in Toronto all the time for shows and I have not witnesses this. I'm not saying this doesn't go on, for sure, but we can't generalize that everyone who claims Straight-Edge are militant. Some people do become militant about their beliefs if they don't get their way, and I think we all know what that is.

yeah the kid who spit on me wished he didnt pretty quick. But i agree, if someone just told me "no i dont smoke/drink" etc id be fine with it. I find usually kids who are so into something like a subculture to the point that it takes over is just a way of filling in a gap for something else in their life.

EDIT:

i didn't say they were all militant. I just find that most teenage straight edgers are militant or assholish. Once they hit over 20 they seem to cool off or lose straight edge completely. These are also kids who are edge one week then switch back the other.
