Yer. Like I was saying - there's a hell of a lot of trade secrets concerning synths today, and they havn't really been the focus of any decent academic research since the 70s...

(I managed to find some pretty cool articles though, one by ARP and one by Oberheim...)

I've had to write mainly about DSP. Which ain't too bad but I've gotta talk about FFT which I just really don't understand properly enough to write about...
Check out Cooley-Tuckey FFT, it's got a cool (harr harr) way of saving processing cycles! :chug:

Blue_Moon 11-12-2010 04:16 PM

just lost 6-5 in football to our rival team

they got a peno with 2 mins to go after a blatent dive, the ref was atrocious... ruined the game... what a stupid thing to happen

Well that's what we're studying atm in DSP. Still don't really get it tbh :P

purple_hazer 11-12-2010 07:21 PM

woop! gonna try out for a band called witchaven and if i make it gonna start touring B]

probably be super poor for a while but fuck it, been doin that this whole year withOUT touring so im down ahahha
I'm inclined to say it's nostalgia, or rather, you simply have more important things in your life than sitting in front of a screen playing a game. As I speak my PS3 sits in the corner of my table unused and unloved. If I do play a game on it anytime soon it'll be GT5 but even then I won't be playing it until early to late January 'cause of trips abroad and January exams.

I do like to think that there's more to gain from old games, and I'm not talking pong, I'm talking about the likes of chess. Or, drunken Risk.
I've never ended a drunken risk game, every single time someone gets really fucking angry and once we had a very girly fist fight haha

What don't you understand about FFT? I'll help you out if I can, I have to use it probably in a very different context to you but a fourier transform is a fourier transform.
PC gaming is crapping out. Many games released are plagued with bugs because they're just shitty ports of what is out for consoles.
The back catalogue makes up for it. There's so much good stuff out there that will run on max on your computer...

There's more to life than graphics :)

Papa Shank 11-13-2010 01:54 PM

Watch the Haye v Harrison fight or make a start to my essay... fight!

Squirrel 11-13-2010 07:29 PM

Essay.

Papa Shank 11-13-2010 07:42 PM

Luckily the fight lasted all of three pathetic rounds. Harrison never stood a chance, Haye was just fucking with him the whole time, he actually said after the fight that he told his family to bet on him winning in the third round and that's why he waited until then lol...

EmbraceRandom 11-14-2010 05:47 AM

Surely that's bent?
Man there's corruption everywhere

Squirrel 11-14-2010 06:11 AM

No, Haye copies Ali by predicting the round in which he'll win for all his fights.

It was a garbage fight from the beginning and it was typical of Sky Sports to big it up and promote it like it actually meant something. All the airheads bought that it was some immense event and turned into the one-evening boxing experts that they do, then moan when it wasn't like Tyson vs. Spinks (which they've never seen, they just say Tyson was "awesome" and "could beat anyone").

benfan 11-14-2010 06:43 AM

Kinda reminds me of Rocky 6 when hes old and fights the young kid who nobody likes and everyone rights him off and they fight and the kid earns himself some respect and Rocky loses on split desicion but he silences the nay-sayers who wrote him off cause he put in a super awesome display of boxing ability.

Only, y'no, Harrison was shit. Rocky was not.

Papa Shank 11-14-2010 06:44 AM

So I get to bed just after 3am, and as expected my flatmates roll in making all sorts of fucking retarded noises and shouting until at least 4am. In return I'm blasting music into the wall I share with this one guy, I hope one of them complain, I really do.

Then it'll be me handing over the KO, not Haye.

benfan 11-14-2010 06:49 AM

Boom

Truth is, my maths isn't very strong, I won't lie about that one. But what didn't help is that fourier, laplace and z-transform were all taught to us last year by this guy who is a horrendous lecturer and basically none of us (and I'm not even exaggerating) could understand it.

Fortunatly the bloke we've got now for DSP is pretty good, and things are making more sense, but honestly, I'm a kinaesthetic/visual learner so I only really truly understand things once I've used them in practise.

Maths is the only reason I'm in newcastle, if I'd done better in maths at A level I'd be at sheffield right now :P (not that I don't think newcastle is awesome - I put sheffield first choice as I thought they'd be fussier... and they were...)

In other news - saw Deftones in leeds last night, was proper awesome. Drummer made quite a few fuckups though...

Fourier Series != Fourier Transform

I like to imagine the continuous FT a.k.a. frequency response as a "projection of a function onto all possible input frequencies". In fact, the definition of the continuous FT looks like a scalar product in a Hilbert space. (And we integrate over the frequencies.)

DFT is the same, but with a finite number of frequencies (since a periodic discrete signal has got a discrete line spectrum).

Hope that makes sense, there's plenty of decent books about it =)
Fourier Series != Fourier Transform
How can you possibly understand the fourier transform without first understanding the fourier nature of waves? I was guessing that the reason he'd been struggling was that no-one had bothered to show him the first principles.

Giga 11-15-2010 02:15 PM

i'm pretty good on the conceptual level of math stuff not so much the actual math part

EmbraceRandom 11-16-2010 03:06 AM

Man this lit review is annoying.
I can't seem to structure it in a way without it seeming like I'm actually beginning to write up the final project

The_Mop 11-16-2010 04:12 AM

We were actually taught fourier series but, as I said, was by the same bloke, therefore, dont really understand completely.. gonna have to read up on it methinks

purple_hazer 11-16-2010 12:57 PM

if its any consolation MOP i think you having to relearn it will probably reinforce the knowledge like crazy. and youll know fourier malarkly like a fourier king!

hey a royal is getting married!

that'll fix everything.

EmbraceRandom 11-17-2010 08:37 AM

I used to like the tradition of royality but in reality, what the feck do they do? And don't they live off tax-payers money?

Blue_Moon 11-17-2010 09:06 AM

harrys flying helicopters

benfan 11-17-2010 09:48 AM

The amount of money they bring into the country through tourism is ridiculous. They are also the figurehead of the Country and our Armed Forces. I kinda get where some people get the whole they dont do anything idea from but they do make the country alot of money.

Although im not quite sure how much of it is left when you deduct the amount of money they use.

Left Face Down 11-17-2010 10:44 AM

Every time I hear a story about the William/Harry I generally think of their mother. Due to the fact I'm American and really hear jack about the Royal family unless it makes world news. Like the idiot who drove his car into a pole (or w/e) a couple years back near their bus. Oh I can't remember the details.

Yeah I guess so. I've always like the tradition of the royal family, it's just with current financial turmoil, the government would obviously would be quicker to rape students than take cuts in their own wages, scale down the ridiculously high wages of certain jobs or seriously look at the costs of the monarch. personally I think it'd be awesome if we didn't have parliament as such, and the country/kingdom was ran by the monarch. Old skool.

But then I'd also want to ride into battle on a horse, alongside the monarchy. With LOTR music. Awesome.

benfan 11-17-2010 11:03 AM

Well it serves the students right for voting for 'New Government' and the Lib Dems/Tories anyway. Seriously what did they expect, so they have sold out the next generation of students by jumping on the i hate Brown bandwagon and using a 'protest Vote'

And i would much rather see the Government get rid of the ridiculous benefit state and get rid of all the scumbag dole-claiming smack head idiots than look at the Royal Family.

I think it gives us a national identity, especially when looking at us from another countries point of view.

EDIT: 123 on the Monarch thing. When we have a King it should be compulsory that he should be on a horse whenever people take his photo and carry a sword with him at all times. Also, I think we should build more Castles.

i think if we got rid of the monarchy you'd be surprised at how little our tourist industry suffered.

the main thing is if we got rid of the monarchy we'd be in a constitutional crisis cause so much of our country belongs to the queen.

guitarbaz 11-17-2010 11:55 AM

god save the queen

Papa Shank 11-17-2010 12:16 PM

Just back from boxing and the last thing I want to hear is people moaning about monarchy ffs, as if we don't have enough shit to moan about with politics.

jaklyons 11-17-2010 12:32 PM

Who the fuck cares tbh.
