Mekkalayakay 12-11-2004 06:14 PM
Does everyone start off with melodic death metal and move on from there?

I was somewhat thrown into the deep end by coypu, when the death heads thread was first starting, and I came out loving it. So it's not absolutely necessary to start at the melodic end.
I was completely opposite. I started with Cryptopsy and Nile, and when I would try to listen to Melodic death, it came off as annoying, and I just couldn't listen to it. Not until now can I somewhat respect melodic death, as I am starting to listen to it more and more.

munky_magik 12-11-2004 06:15 PM

Thanks for the help everyone!

Mekkalayakay 12-11-2004 06:17 PM

The hardest thing for me to get into was the growling. That took some time... This is where Lord worm helped out. Once you get used to him, you can pretty much listen to anything.

Arucard 12-11-2004 06:18 PM

hold the fone...
OPETH ARE DEATH?!
I LIKE OPETH!

xizoesira 12-11-2004 06:19 PM

Yes sir. Progressive death.

Bartender 12-11-2004 06:20 PM
Of course not. I was talking personally. I mean, if you like it from the start, hey, thats great, but I'm saying 9 out of 10 times, you will probably need to start slow then move up from there.
Yeah, I know. Just thought I'd point it out :)

Good list by the way, though it looks like you should definitely check out Arghoslent. They'd be at the top of my melodic death recommendations.

****, thats great! maybe all is not lost. Have you guys seen the thread on moby and a perfect circle?

xizoesira 12-11-2004 06:23 PM

Arghoslent could totally pull Running Wild-esque pirate metal on us if they wanted too. That first riff in Flogging the Cargo is a fucking pirate metal riff. :P

Arsis gets the top spot for my melodic death pick.

Arucard 12-11-2004 06:26 PM

arsis are definatly good.

Arucard 12-11-2004 06:27 PM

lol i sure am, i got introuced to them after the ARSIS = BEST MELODIC DEATH EVER! thread came up.

Kingofdudes 12-11-2004 06:27 PM

My feet hurt :(

Dancin' Man 12-11-2004 06:28 PM

I started with Tool and stuck with that for a long time until I found late In Flames and gradually moved around from there. I got into metalcore mostly until Subtle Dagger helped me find DEP then I went to Between the Buried and Me. Then there was Opeth. Beautiful Opeth. It's an amazing gateway band. That really is what got me into Melodic Death. Then Death metal just kind of followed suit. Symphonic black metal has always sort of been there since I found Arcturus. I just recently got into the really brutal stuff and enjoying it. Basically if it's different than most other music, I like it.

Ramsey 12-11-2004 06:28 PM
Ramsey you have such sexy death metal taste. :-*
lolz :-*
Yeah, I know. Just thought I'd point it out :)

I've heard you reccomend it a ton of times...but I never bothered to check it out. Thats mainly because I'm afraid of it sounding like Dissection (which I hated, but everyone kept reccomending it) and I'm afraid of the recording quality, which usually turns me off alot of metal. (I.E. Black metal mainly)

I will do though, sir. And thank you btw. :)

BoboTheRagingHobo 12-11-2004 06:28 PM

Melodic death that also rules -

Eternal Tears Of Sorrow
Suidakra
Hypocrisy (newer Hypocrisy, older is just plain death metal though)
Amon Amarth
Arsis
Carcass (heartwork era)
Omnium Gatherum

I forgot Carcass!

Also:

Dew Scented (although they are mainly thrash now, I guess)

Screw Arsis :)

Anyway, what's wrong with pirate metal?

*hasn't heard Running Wild*

I haven't heard Cauldron Black Ram either, though I assure you it's not through lack of trying.

xizoesira 12-11-2004 06:30 PM

Oh my, an Eternal Tears of Sorrow mention.

I'm listening to Iced Earth - The Coming Curse and liking it much.

I've heard a couple of their songs and I'm picking up an album of theirs soon. The idea of pirate metal is just so out-there you can't help but love it.

Same here. If you want stellar recording quality, Necrophagist. Perfection.

Hehe, I didn't say pirate metal was bad - I don't see nearly enough, in fact. Running Wild is pretty much pirate heavy metal.

No production problems with Arghoslent, and no black metal influence either. Just melodic death. Unless you mean the slight NS slant on the lyrics.

Ooo, very nice. Muhammeds playing is also FLAWLESS.

Actually, I think it was Mekkelayakay who sent me the first song i've ever heard.

The only thing that I don't like about Opeth are the growled vocals

Any links or anything? I can't find anything :(

I also like the idea of pirate metal. It appeals to the part of me that loves Maiden and Manowar so much.

Arucard 12-11-2004 06:34 PM

I started with GASP Lost Prophets - The Fake Sound Of Progress (which i still think is a solid album) then went from there to nu-metal such as P.O.D and Linkin Parks first album. Then i got introduced to maiden when i picked up one their cd's, and my love for real rock and metal blossomed. Next was my obsession with RATM for a while, and then all the good bands came at once. Pro-Pain, Aveneged Sevenfold (dont kick me, I like them) Soundgarden and G'n'r. Then came my punk phase (which im still in) with 88 Fingers Louie, Agnostic Front and Bad Brains. Then came my interest in the UK Ska Scene, with band such as the filaments, capdown, the foamers, freaks union (more punk than ska), bosseye and some american bases ska. Now im getting heavily into power metal, my faves being DragonForce, Children Of Bodom, Iced Earth and, what i thought was power, Opeth. And thats where i am now. (but i also love alterbridge, dont hit me).

Nah, I love black metal, I just hate badly produced black metal. Immortal would be my definition of a great Black Metal bands.

But, sounds good, I will definetly be giving it a shot.

Lock yourself in a room with Opeth until you do like them and then you can continue on your journey of metal enlightenment. :)

Steerpike 12-11-2004 06:35 PM

I pirated (pun intended) a couple songs through Kazaa.

You can pick up the albums at Amazon.com pretty cheap.

EDIT: To Bartender.

Immortal's probably near the top of my preferred black metal bands, too - At the Heart of Winter is an awesome album. And yeah, it probably has something to do with the production, though I've got no problem with low quality black metal values.

Wow...it was alot different for me.

My first metal band (I use the term "metal" very loosley, granted I was 13 at the time) was Limp Bizkit. Yeah. :(

From there I got into Nirvana, after hearing Smells Like Teen Spirit, and then onto RATM and Korn. From there I got into Slipknot, and then Pantera and Metallica. I then got into Metalcore like Killswitch, Shadows Fall, and Chimaira, as a result of the Ozzfest at the time (which I used as a refrence to get into new bands) Around that time, I registered here, and its opened a new gatway of music for me, and now I listen to tons of Power Metal, Death, Black and Thrash,.

Darkthrone is so crap....if they just upped their production a LITTLE, I would like them. But I can't...I just can't. I can't even take them seriously..

Arucard 12-11-2004 06:39 PM

i guess its kinda the same, im 15 so ive had two years of metal.
