I was alerted (by my English teacher, who likes to announce famous birthdays) that it is Gershwin's birth anniversary today. In honor, I dug out a vinyl record I've got of Bernstein conducting and playing piano with the New York Philharmonic in performances of Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris.

What great stuff.
Why do you say "birth anniversary" instead of "birthday?" Is it because he's dead?
Why do you say "birth anniversary" instead of "birthday?" Is it because he's dead?
It's because I had just used the word "birthday" a few words back, and I wanted it to sound more fluent.

br3ad_man 09-27-2005 05:23 AM

It's my birthday soon :)
It's my birthday soon :)
Same. In 4..months... :p

Anyway, not listened to much music this weekend (not having time due to my dad being taken really ill) but managed to listen to:

Herbie Hancock - Headhunters
Geto Boys - Till Death Do Us Part

Happymeal 09-27-2005 03:23 PM

Listening to the new Cryptopsy, Lord Worm is high pitched now:confused:

Also, I'm thinking of Ulver's Blood Inside for best electronica album of the year(but I haven't heard the latest Shpongle, so I'll see)

ZEROthirtythree 09-27-2005 04:15 PM

I am diggin the new blackalicious

I'm expecting that to arrive at my home tomorrow, along with the "new" Coltrane and Monk album.

I'm so pumped.

asdf 09-27-2005 05:33 PM

I've been listening to a lot of tom waits, Kaizer's orchestra, and World/Inferno Friendship Society.

I have to go to the local record store yet to pick up the CD's they ordered for me.

Zappa 09-27-2005 05:36 PM

Right now I'm listening to Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. I believe this is the first time I've popped this CD in. The first movement has a very popular theme that I know you've heard. It's a pretty neat work.
Dead Can Dance - A Passage In Time

after a few listens, there's some really great stuff ("Ulysses", "Cantara", "Enigma of the Absolute") and a lot that doesn't do anything for me at all.
I recently got "Into The Labyrinth", and I feel the same exact way about it.

Lord Worm's performance wasn't very good on the new album, but the rest of it was pretty cool. Plus he pwns the old guy.

I'd agree with the Ulver album, I like it more than Shpongle.

pixiesfanyo 09-28-2005 04:51 AM

As the Roots Undo.

God.

I don't think there is a single flaw on this album.

br3ad_man 09-28-2005 05:56 AM

The flaw for me is that I can only listen to it if I'm really happy. That basically rules out any weekday since I'm tired and grumpy for my whole friggin school life. I like listening to it on Friday afternoons. :)

I finally got AIM... Can I steal from you now?

Zappa 09-28-2005 03:09 PM

Listening to Blackalicious' The Craft for the first time. It's better than Gift of Gab's solo album from last year, which is the closest thing I can compare it to. It's definitely not Blazing Arrow, but it's so far incredibly solid adn catchy.

Happymeal 09-28-2005 03:49 PM
I finally got AIM... Can I steal from you now?
And I can send you Mono.

Today has been a Fugazi/Jesus Lizard/Sigur Ros/Smart Went Crazy kind of day so far.

ATM 09-28-2005 05:49 PM

Today at work:

Supergrass
The Dandy Warhols
XTC
Band of Gypsies
RJD2
Count Bass D
Boogie Down Productions

Robert Crumb 09-28-2005 05:59 PM
It's definitely not Blazing Arrow, but it's so far incredibly solid adn catchy.
That's pretty much my summary of the album. One thing I do love about it though is how much of a change it is from the previous two. Which I guess isn't surprising seeing the time between it and Blazing Arrow and all they did in between.

Zappa 09-28-2005 06:01 PM

It probably flows better than Blazing Arrow, but none of its songs are as strong as the strongest on that record. I'm overall very pleased with my first listen.

I also got the new Thelonious Monk Quartet With John Coltrane release today. It's really, really great.

Luxor 09-28-2005 06:12 PM

I'm actually listening to The Craft right now as well. I just randomly downloaded it after I got Blazing Arrow, I didn't even know it's their most recent.

I'll probably get that this weekend when I go to the uni fair in downtown TO.
