the balance of power has shifted throughout history and it will do so again. Don't fret my different coloured friends my people's time at the top is pretty much over. I suggest we all start learning chinese.
That's not the point here. As a minority, I can say that I constantly feel a sense of dispalcement, that this isn't where I'm supposed to be, and that I need to act a certainw ay to be acceptable, but at the same time, there are things about my ethnic identity that I don't know enough about, and it leaves me feeling like I have an identity crisis. Entire races have been reduceed to lawn mowers, thugs, and geeks.
But at one time we were kings, warriors, and civilized beyond the point of some European countries, but still as white people are the majority, when people hear "African" they probably think of some bushtreading face painted blowgun wielding jungle savage, not the empires that spanend the Savannah and Timbuktu, where Greeks came to learn from African philosophers. "Mexican" makes us think of a river hopping gandener, not the Incas or Mayas who were tricked by Europeans and became nearly extinct. "Asians" makes you think of a nerdy kid who wears glasses and probably speaks poor English, not the continent that yielded civilizations too complex for Europeans to understand, which led to the use of "Chinese' as a slang adjective for confusing. Not enough of anybody recognizes that. PS: I typed this in response to Reovlution;s post at the top of the page. A lot happens eh?
Haha, what? You feel displaced in this melting pot culture? WTF? That's BS man, I'm a minority too and I feel entirely in touch not only with my status as an American but also as a Latino. If you think the two cultures cannot mix you are wrong, I know tons of Latinos who mix their heritage with average American culture. And FYI, Mexicans have a lot of European blood in them, Europeans came over centuries ago, raped the women and killed the men. SO chances are you're more European than Incan or Mayan or any of those long since extinct races.
So then are you really stupid if you can't afford to actually educate yourself?
You misunderstand. Poor people live in poorer neighborhoods, which have lesser education systems. Thus, poor people cannot be educated as well. However, take a smart person in a poor neighborhood. They still attend the same school and even if they are bright, they can't get any better an education, and education is critical to intelligence. If the brightest kid around was never taught to do math properly, he can't be blamed for it, but he's not smart still.
A) Thank you for telling me exactly how I feel. I'm confused. Europeans were in Asia and Central America at the same time, actually, they were in Asia first. Columbus went sailing for India (Asia) in 1492, so they were well aware of that culture's presence prior. In fact, Marco Polo was trading with China as early as the 1300's. So that's over half a millenia of mutual cultural assimilation. European culture is more dominant because it's a more forceful culture but to say Europeans weren't interacting with Asians until the 1800's is ignorant. Modern Mexican culture has existed since the European invasion, and that is what Mexican culture is. Mayan and Incan culture are not Mexican culture. If your great x 5 grandfather came from culture A, and then all your other cutural history is based in culture B, you embrace culture B because that is your dominant culture. Mayan and Incan culture is primarily dead because tehre are no more Incans or Mayans. Culture is not about the color of your skin, it's about the culture that cultivates you and is part of your identity. |

And actually, I specifically said
The Chinese did not initially refuse to trade with the British. They were trading with the Europeans for centuries. The British were just losing lots of money on the deal because they had to trade directly silver for the goods they wanted. Except for the opium they traded into the country. The British smuggled opium into the country to make a profit, not to hook the citizens on a drug. The citizens were already hooked before the emperor banned it. The war started when the merchants were forced to give up all of their opium before entering Chinese ports, which amounted to a massive loss of money, and that triggered the war...not any drive to invade China. I have no doubt the city was plundered. Read history...the victors always punder the riches of the losers. That's how war was done. But right there you say people aren't equal, that's BS. If anything minorities are given more privilege than white people nowadays. It's great you have trouble balancing your cultures, but it's a mental thing, it's nothing society or the government forces on you.
That was after they forced the Chinese government to let them do it.
The British did not force anything upon the Chinese until the actual Opium war which was over a massive loss of product. Most were derived before we found out about them though so we don't attribute it to them, and many more were wrong, but fit the data they had at the time. The Middle East is also the source of many ideas, due in part to the advancement of culture in that entire region...greece, turkey, all those areas. Very rich in advanced concepts. That was definitely not me freaking out :) But it's pretty insulting you think I wouldn't realize Greece was imperfect. |

Poorer neighborhoods get less education, and less education means less oppuurtunities. I don't know enough to say who's responsible, but as far as I can tell, it's mostly a lack of drive to better themselves. I never blamed the government, it says so right there. Also, I'm not in favor of affirmative action, that's reverse racism. And I do believe that my cultural conflict is a result of the society that I live in, not soemthing I made up in my head. And I didn't say it was forced on me, it's just a consequence of my circumstances. Please read everytihng I write before you respond to me. |
Actually, I think it's more to do with class than race.
|
Exactly. Poor white people are in the same plight. Rich minorities are just as well off as white rich people. Affirmitive action would be great if it discriminated based on economic status and not race. Because race is not the dividing line anymore, class is. Poor people struggle.
There are a lot of papers out there about how cultures have meshed and created what is modern American culture, but I've never seen papers out there talking about culture clashes. The only real culture clash I see nowadays is a religion clash. So as far as I'm concerned it is in your head and if you'd like to provide evidence to prove me wrong go for it. |
Exactly. Poor white people are in the same plight. Rich minorities are just as well off as white rich people. I don't think race has ever been a real divide. Racism, like sexism and borders (the ones between countries), is a method used to divide working class people. The only real divide between people has always been power, and in human society, since the use of currency, money has determined power. So in a society run by money, those with money have more power than those without money, and so more opportunity to do whatever they want. |
Well that's the base issue, but back in the day, there weren't free black men, and so there was a racial divider...and when women could not own property, there was a sex division...even if it all was based on power.
