^ i want them to take their music where it hasn't been yet.
that's what progressive is all about right?
going back to the early 90's era (I&W and awake) would be in essence...regressive.

fave album right now is 8vm. mainly the title track. it fills me with so many emotions when i just turn it up real loud and listen to it straight through.

Inkstar 05-17-2006 11:36 PM

Yeah you're absolutely right ghetto, but I'm saying that I feel like they're turning FROM progressive all together. With their earlier music, you could tell straight away it was a very technical/prog song, however with their latest music, at first it seems like it's fairly straight, you know? Like just another rock or metal group, despite the prog element still being there.

You follow?

ghettoeddo 05-18-2006 12:07 AM

yea i gotcha.

in that case, then yes. i want them to retain prog elements, while trying something new.

Lord Abortion 05-18-2006 01:57 AM

I&W is still my favourite album.

Kirk's Puppet 05-18-2006 03:21 AM

My recent fave album is Train of Thought.

It was my least fave for a while, but now I love it.

Ah yes, but then it could be seen as progressive, making a full circle in their styles.
That means another power metal-ish album first :D

Inkstar 05-18-2006 05:36 AM

Hahaha DT doing power-prog. Dude, I can totally see that. James can do soaring high vocals:

"HIIIIIIGH ABOVEEE THE MOOOOOUUUUUNNNNNNNTAAAAIIINNNS THE FLAME OF THE DRAAAAAGGGOOOONNN SOOOOARRRSSSSS!!"

Jev 05-18-2006 05:54 AM

I would cream. It'd be like a dream come true.

Twould be great indeed.

Clunge 05-18-2006 07:30 AM

Hmm, I really can't get into DT's earlier stuff.

I've been listening to Images And Words and Awake lots and neither of them do much for me.

I much prefer the newer, heavier DT, from SFAM onwards.

ThunderBass 05-18-2006 08:01 AM

i love it all... :D of all the albums i have there isnt one that i havnt thoroughly enjoyed...

Enlighten Me 05-18-2006 08:13 AM

The older albums are better IMO.
I really can't dig ToT that much, it has good songs but some tend to go on way longer than they should. I kinda lose intrest in some of them.

Clunge 05-18-2006 08:33 AM

Ya'see...

I really dig ToT and 8V - I love the heaviness and the synths with it, it just appeals to me a lot more.

Enlighten Me 05-18-2006 09:15 AM

I dig 8v more than ToT that's for sure.

Jev 05-18-2006 12:23 PM

Same here. 8v has a wider range of stuff. ToT's just heavy all the way through, minus Vacant of course.

TheRaspberryJams 05-18-2006 12:34 PM

Dream Theater are awesome.

Yeah, 8vm has really grown on me since I first got it.

GenuineImitation 05-18-2006 01:45 PM

My all time favorite is Scenes from a Memory, but I love them all. My current favorite is Octavarium or Images and Words.

Yeah I agree. Both HTF and ITNOG go for too long, especially the latter. Endless Sacrifice is a pretty good balance, I think, and SoC is perfect.
As I Am is a pretty good length, but TDS is a tad long as well.

ghettoeddo 05-18-2006 11:58 PM

this dying soul and honor thy father are my least favorites on that album.

i actually think as i am is brilliant, because it shows dream theater is somewhat capable fo writing a standard metal song, instead of dragging it on and on and on. although i guess 7 minutes is quite lengthy. but every second rocks.

ThunderBass 05-19-2006 03:15 AM

I dont know about In the Name of God but i agree that Honor Thy Father goes for a tad too long... probably the one blemish on awesome album...

badtaste 05-19-2006 03:35 AM

Standard as in they play they follow the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-solos-chorus structure?

Inkstar 05-19-2006 06:09 AM
Standard as in they play they follow the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-solos-chorus structure?
Yep. Very straight forward song, but still has that 'edge' to it.

Jev 05-19-2006 09:47 AM
Standard as in they play they follow the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-solos-chorus structure?
Intro - verse - chorus - verse - chorus - solos - chorus to be precise.

I'm probably wrong :upset:

Clunge 05-19-2006 10:28 AM

I love every second of ToT and 8V, bar about 40, that being the rap-ish bit in Honor Thy Father.

Two of my fave albums ever  .

Jev 05-19-2006 10:29 AM

James' rapping leaves much to be desired, I think they shouldn't have put that in.

Or they could've at least had someone else do it.

Element of LED 435 05-19-2006 07:40 PM

the thing about sacrificed sons for me was at first wen i listened to it i only thot it was ok but then after 3 times of playback i realized how great it was..... does this happen to anyone who listens to dream theater? theres so much u dont catch on too the first couple times because the songs go many different directions and are so long

Lionheart1827 05-19-2006 07:44 PM

Yeah a lot of people are like that.

It took me forever to get into Awake.:thumb:

encmetalhead 05-19-2006 07:49 PM

how about the 24 min song thats a tad to much dont u think?

encmetalhead 05-19-2006 07:53 PM

they had a 45 min song on that cd?
u sure
cause i got that cd and theres no 45 min song trust me

Deth 05-19-2006 07:56 PM

The 40 minute song is the second disc of 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence, but it was split up into 8 (I think) parts.

Shadows Within 05-19-2006 07:56 PM

yeah i thought there was but i checked my CD case and there wasn't so i deleted post.
yeah i thought there was but i checked my CD case and there wasn't so i deleted post.
ok gotcha cause liek late last year i got really into them and bought like 4 of their cds lol i didnt but the 6 degrees one though lol

ghettoeddo 05-19-2006 08:03 PM

the entire second disk of six degrees is one song.
just broken up into sections.

every listen through a dream theater song reveals new intricacies you will have missed. even after almost a year of continuous listening, i'm still finding new things. it helps to turn down the bass sometimes to hear other lines here and there :] music souds different from your iPod, CD player, home system, car stereo

Lionheart1827 05-19-2006 08:06 PM
how about the 24 min song thats a tad to much dont u think?
No way man.

It's actually quite awesome.

A Change of Seasons pretty much defines Progmetal.

Octavarium is just plain awesome.:thumb:

encmetalhead 05-19-2006 08:09 PM

ok raise your hand if u can sit through one song for 24 min and not lose interest

i could do it if i tried but thats very hard cause ppl think i'm like an a.d.d kid and i'm startign to see why.....is that bad?

nowitzki 05-19-2006 08:49 PM

I would much prefer to listen to one amazing 24 minute song, than several average length songs. Its not like these songs are just the same riffs being repeated over and over, they are.. well, progressive.

Deth 05-19-2006 08:56 PM

*raise hand*

Many of my favorite songs are over 20 minutes. I'm listening to a 28 minute song right now.

Atica 05-19-2006 09:35 PM

I can sit for that time, with A Change of Seasons, Octavarium (just the intro gets me bored), The Odyssey-Symphony X, and The Divine Wings of Tragedy-Symphony X.
