I, too, think the only real Black Sabbath was with Ozzy in it. Sure, maybe Dio and Gillan were better technical vocalists, but they weren't right for Sabbath IMO.
*shakes head*
He wouldn't be able to sing any songs from the other eras. And I would die hearing him butcher "Children of the Sea" or something.
He'd probably die trying to do Disturbing The Priest. That's some of Gillan's best work, Ozzy couldn't touch it.

pate 12-04-2006 10:27 PM

Or the Tony Martin stuff

"Crooooooooooooooosss of *dies*"

Leper 12-05-2006 01:09 AM
Do you not like it because they changed the style of music? Because the Ozzy stuff was always changing. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath didn't sound like Master Of Reality for example.
No, I just don't find the others interesting because they didn't posess that edge that Ozzy brought, and I think that was what set Sabbath apart. After Ozzy left, to me, they just became an ordinary rock band.

pate 12-05-2006 01:17 AM

For me,

Dio era > Martin era > Ozzy era

Leper 12-05-2006 01:25 AM

Like, to give you an example of my taste, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is my favourite album. Every song on that album sounds nearly perfect to me, mostly because it's Ozzy at his best.

PinkFreud 12-05-2006 02:08 AM

I still like the Ozzy era best, then Dio, and I lose interest pretty quickly after that.

rippa32 12-05-2006 04:58 AM

At least give Born Again a try, its very good.

My favorite is Mob Rules.

Brew 12-05-2006 06:15 PM

To pick a favourite (or two..maybe three) from each era for me...

Ozzy years - Volume.4, Sabotage, Never Say Die!
Dio years - Heaven and Hell, Live Evil (best live Sabbath album IMO)
Martin years - TYR

rippa32 12-05-2006 07:57 PM

I pretty much agree with you there. Id probably put the debut or Master Of Reality instead of Never Say Die! though. Not to say Never Say Die! is bad, just not one of my favourites.

pate 12-05-2006 10:53 PM

Ozzy Years - Master of Reality
Dio Years - Mob Rules
Martin Years - Cross Purposes

rippa32 12-06-2006 06:26 PM

Id like to get Cross Purposes actually, I just never seem to find it anywhere. Might have to go ebay, thats where I got TYR.

pate 12-06-2006 09:37 PM

I got Cross Purposes new for 3 dollars two years ago. :):)

PinkFreud 12-06-2006 09:39 PM

No love for the Gillan...album.

pate 12-06-2006 09:41 PM

Yeah...I left it out because there is no "favorite Gillan era" album....there is THE Gillan era album.

Tyler 12-06-2006 09:42 PM

Lee you pick Mob Rules over Heaven and Hell!? WTF?

pate 12-06-2006 09:53 PM

Mob Rules is my favorite Sabbath album. Heaven and Hell has a few classic tracks, but a ton of weak spots, where Mob Rules is top notch all the way through, except for fucking E5150.

rippa32 12-07-2006 12:53 AM

Whats wrong with a bit of keyboard instrumental (that's what it is isn't it? I don't have Mob Rules, yet.). It worked perfectly in TYR.

pate 12-07-2006 08:43 AM

It's like three minutes of horrible electronic noise.

And Tyr is a horribly underrated album.

rippa32 12-08-2006 12:45 AM

I agree, all Tony Martin one's are. However I just don't understand the reasoning behind Feels Good To Me, it's good but doesn't fit with the Norse mythology theme.

Brew 12-09-2006 04:48 PM

The record label forced the band to have a radio friendly song to release as a single from TYR, hence why Feels Good To Me got tacked on the end.

I nearly bought Seventh Star today, found it for £5. The choice of a new Sabbath album to add to my collection or lunch next week..lunch won :-\

rippa32 12-09-2006 06:30 PM

I suppose you could have eaten the album if you got hungry :thumb:

I still think Feels Good To Me should have been a non-album single. I actually put the TYR CD on with it programmed to skip Feels Good To Me and going from Valhalla to Heaven In Black just felt right.

rippa32 12-11-2006 07:21 PM

So what album's don't you have brew?

pate 12-11-2006 07:28 PM

I've been on a total Sabbath binge the last three days. Just yesterday I went through like 60-some tracks, and I've been back at it today.

rippa32 12-11-2006 09:40 PM

It's the way to go :thumb:

Tyler 12-11-2006 09:48 PM

Mob Rules is so underrated.

One of those weak spots being the title track IMO.

Tyler 12-11-2006 10:28 PM

Srsly?!

Heaven and Hell is one of my favourite Doomy metal tracks.

edit: 6000th post in a thread I rarely frequent. Heheh.

Meh, I find it incredibly generic and boring.
