Rosetta Stone is easy enough to torrent. I've never heard of that Pimsleur one but on their website German is listed as one of their top 5 languages. What are you learning in your class right now?
Yeah, Pimsleur's a little obscure but my dad became effectively fluent in french with it. Michel Thomas programmes aren't too bad either.

Blue_Moon 11-05-2010 10:02 AM

ill just get the bus to belfast tomorow, it'll save me parking, petrol and toll fees and theres buses every hour from here to there, 24 hr bus service each way from dublin to belfast is it really that necessary

I also remember seeing a link somewhere to a bunch of PDFs of material that the CIA uses to teach spies languages and shiz, need to find that again.
Please tell me he mentions it in his music as if he's gangsta?
Tupac got rat-a-tat-tat'd 5 times and survived.

'5 shots couldn't drop me, I took em and smiled, now I'm back to set the record straight...with my AK, I'm still the thug that you love to hate, motherfucker I hit em up!'

And he then died.

edit: Real book is on the way, I know a sick Sax player so meeting up with him every Friday to go through some jazz. Hopefully my sight reading will improve a shit-load, as well as my general jazz music knowledge
it will improve dramatically id suppose. itd be a good idea to get some sort of teacher who can plant improvisational ideas in your noggin too. what do you know about chord voicings?

EmbraceRandom 11-05-2010 03:16 PM

Yeah I asked the music lecturers (I'm music technology) if they did private composition/theory lessons but none of them do. I think I might just ask if I can go to some of the first year music lectures, could pick some stuff up there.

But then this sax player is really unbelievable, he'll be able to help me with some improv stuff I think.

Re: chord voicings; very little! Care to enlighten to me as to where I should start?

That'd be helpful, lol. Right now they are focussing on grammar and vocabulary, and then kind of getting us to apply it to certain situations. Frankly I need to pull my finger out, I should be aceing this 'cause I have German friends :upset:

I've always picked up on German grammar pretty easily, maybe 'cause it's more similar to English grammar than a language like Spanish. But vocabulary is definitely the thing I have the most trouble with, if I don't use a word on a regular basis I tend to forget it.

El-Ahrairah 11-06-2010 10:29 AM

This basically just comes down to me hating clapton, vaughn etc for taking something beautiful and fragile and turning it into an excuse to wank in the minor pentatonic

To me those two are to blues what boiling water is to black coffee

I'm not a 'purist'; I don't think that delta blues is untouchable by any means, but if you compare "since I'm gonna leave you" or "when the levee breaks" (zep) to "mary had a little lamb" you'll get some idea of where i'm coming from

You mean, a vital ingredient?

:naughty:

EmbraceRandom 11-06-2010 04:11 PM

Not necessarily. You could add COLD water and then heat the entire mix up; the water is no longer just water, so it cannot be boiling water.

Lol at myself.

jaklyons 11-06-2010 05:17 PM

wat

You are aware that Albert King considered SRV a great blues guitarist, yes?

Bruce E Kinesis 11-07-2010 07:19 AM
You are aware that Albert King considered SRV a great blues guitarist, yes?
Al King is not my jesus; I am quite capable of holding an opinion that does not conform with the opinion of someone I respect

If Son House came back from the dead and said clapton's cover of after midnight was better than the original, that wouldn't make me agree

Blue_Moon 11-07-2010 08:27 AM

fuck yeh fried chicken = dancing

in belfast still, hella cheap drinks, and im sitting her in a chicks apartment wearing her clothes, its rather odd, streaming some football, not a bad day

paul gilbert in a few hrs

Bruce E Kinesis 11-07-2010 09:23 AM

Gilbert?

You guys really haven't changed in 7 years

Squirrel 11-07-2010 10:04 AM

Yeah heaven forbid we listen to music we enjoyed earlier than today.

The_Mop 11-07-2010 10:08 AM

mick thompson is my fave blues guitarist
Yeah heaven forbid we listen to music we enjoyed earlier than today.
your tastes are generally supposed to improve as you get older.

or at least move on beyond joe satriani and paul gilbert.

Squirrel 11-07-2010 11:06 AM

I don't really get how a taste can improve, given that it's a taste.

And who says just cause you still like something that you don't like other things in addition?

Just seems like we're gonna start an arguement with smug-patrol users talking shit. Which is massively ironic coming from me. I'll go out on a limb and say that people like Bruce and yourself are regarded as rather smug/arrogant/cantankerous, hence my previous statement.

EmbraceRandom 11-07-2010 11:08 AM

I agree with Squirrel on this one. Taste isn't measured.

fingers mccoy 11-07-2010 11:10 AM

no one says you don't like other things in addition.

all I'm saying is that I have higher hopes for music than tacky crap like that.

for me, satriani and gilbert are in the same category as kenny g.

i mean gilbert is still amusing.

i could go into great detail qualifying my opinions on the matter but I don't think anybody wants that.

purple_hazer 11-07-2010 02:27 PM

i agree man kenny g rules

Bruce E Kinesis 11-07-2010 05:03 PM

I still like some stuff I liked 7 years ago, it's just weird to me because the whole shreddy guitar thing was part of my life such a long time ago that you kinda forget it's even there

Blue_Moon 11-07-2010 07:22 PM

PG was awsome, not ur normal shredfest shit, yah there was some of it, but he done tonnes of covers, cool songs, intereacted nicely, had some fun

he puts on an awsome show, heard lots of calsssic hits some of his own stuff, i didnt recognise a few but i got a free ticket for the show and a bed to stay in in a different town, i wasnt complaining!

awsome night 8)

bars close RIDICULIUSLY early in belfast though, ill tell ya that much

EmbraceRandom 11-08-2010 02:00 AM

It's kinda longshot, but does anyone here know of any decent resources concerning upsampling and downsampling for audio? Preferably scientific articles....

EmbraceRandom 11-08-2010 01:01 PM

All I kind find is a shit load of patents.
It's kinda longshot, but does anyone here know of any decent resources concerning upsampling and downsampling for audio? Preferably scientific articles....
I assume you've tried "Oppenheim, Alan V.; Ronald W. Schafer, John R. Buck (1999). Discrete-Time Signal Processing (2nd Edition ed.). Prentice Hall. ISBN 0-13-754920-2."

The_Mop 11-08-2010 02:48 PM

Yeah, we have that at our library but I cant get there right now. I've managed to find some articles on pitch-shifting, so i should be o.k for now at least...

Basically doing a lit review atm for my synth dissertation project. Its a complete pain in the arse because we're not supposed to just use textboks and lecture notes, we have to use scienific publications as well.

That's kinda a problem for me because our lecture note have almost nothing to do with the kind of things I'll be doing to make this synth (or at least, at this reviewing stage) and there's a select few textbooks that talk about synthesizers in detail - I've only managed to find two - and things get even worse when looking at scientific articles. I've only found a handful of relevent things to use :(
