I take my post back. They stopped making good music after 6DOIT (The Glass Prison kicks ***).
Listen to yourselves, people! Dream Theater do make crappy songs. To say that all their work kicks ***, is being arrogant. "I walk beside you" sucked. Octavarium could have been better (The bloody song isn't a whole song - it's a series of songs put together. Compare it to ACOS). They're not even progressing any more, all their songs are metally now.
Its all opinion. I personally like "I walk beside you" and "Octavarium." |
i walk beside you is great. it grows on you. used to hate it as well.
and if octavarium is a string of songs....so is ACOS. on a broader scale, octavarium ties togehter the whole ALBUM instead of within the frame of the song like ACOS does. only DT song i detest: lines in the sand. everything else is fair game :] they're the ONLY band in my entire music-listening career so far that i have been unable to switch out a CD for weeks on end |
yeah i love both those songs, and i think they still are made good music after 6DOIT it's just in a different direction, which IMO is a good thing.
you can't have a band sounding the same their whole career, they would get boring. |

I really like I walk beside you, too. It's very different...which is what prog is all about, surely? Going in new directions?
|
no i said i like the intro only like when portnoy starts the drums and it gets faster
the rest of the song besides that sounds cheesy to me at least
Oh right, sorry I misread. The only song of ToT I think is slightly cheesy is Honor Thy Father. |
Everyone vote Portnoy now or I'm going to slap you
|
I already have :smoke:
|
:smoke:
I wonder if we could get Portnoy to join us on the Stonerbus? |
I didn't think any of the DT members ever did drugs.
|
They don't look like stoners.
|
Exactly. They all look like they've not touched anything.
|
Damnit.
I want some stoner conversation with Mikey. |
We will get him don't worry.
|
If they turn to drugs, they lose my respect. But hey, sif they'll ever do that anyway. :P
Gunna give Octavarium another listen now in hope of 'getting into it'. |
Maybe drugs will broaden their horizons
|
I don't think so.
I think they're all a bit too old to start now. |
maybe theyll be like towelie and need some good ideas for a new album so they smoke some weed
but i doubt it as i think all of them are family men |
I can't wait to hear a new album. Even though it's not even being recorded yet.
|
Or written, probably.
|
even if they start in 2 years they can write an album in 2 weeks
like they did with ToT and it doesnt take much longer to record |
Yeah they are amazing.
I mean I was reading the LTE booklets and the albums were written in a week each  |
they must not bull**** around like other bands and are good song writers... pathetic how other bands take a year to write an album
|
A berklee education and a perfect knowledge of music theory does help.
Look at James hetfield. He's admitted to not knowing anything about music, or how to read music. That's why bands like Metallica take a while to write albums. |
hmm.... makes me wanna learn theory
|
It's difficult to grasp at first, but once you're over that hurdle it's not too difficult.
|
any books you recommend?? i have john petrucci wild stringdom.... which is the closest theory book i have
|

I used http://www.musictheory.net And JH does suck, but when Kirk started helping they got worse. |
I've seen the video of 'the writing of TOT' and like, they finish writing just like that. Suddenly Mike just goes "that's it"..... "we've finished. We've finished writing. Hmmm."
Took them almost exactly 3 weeks or something. |
anyone know a story behind the symbol for dream theater? such as who made it, why they chose that or any info?
|
Charlie Domonici (sp?) made it.
It was the Majesty symbol but when DT changed their name they kept it. |
Yeah, it still fits...it's seems made of D M T...
|

It's based on a mark used by Mary Queen of Scots. They decided to use it because it had a M in it (for Majesty). http://www.dtfaq.com/attachments/mary_queen_of_scots.gif |
It's a cool mark.

I just realized how good Endless Sacrifice is...aside from the chorus riff. :p
|
Yhe whole song is sweet, actually the whole cd, probably my 2nd or 3th favorite DT cd.
But nothing can top Images & Words |
