white people suck at hiphop

kingsoby1 10-20-2009 08:48 AM

i'm using white as an adjective for a critic that only thinks conscious hip-hop is worth anything. White people probably are the most dedicated hip-hop heads... it's not my creation that hip-hop only infiltrated white society through its conscious bent.

i mean, brother ali talks about redemption, living through hard times, and a ton of cliche ****... he's no "street preacher" and went to a suburb high-school. he's an awesome battle rapper, but when he veers away from his roots (ie Shadows on the Sun), he sucks. Us is poorly produced, reeks of cliche, has terrible guest spots, and is some of Ali's least inspired rapping in years. His rhyme schemes are boring, subject matter is trite, and baptist preacher flow gets boring over an entire record.

i could go on and on with you about why this record sucks, but people are entitled to their opinion. it's just my personal feeling that people that like this are putting some kind of attachment to the subject matter that really isn't there. almost every brother ali fan (that listens to other hip-hop besides rhymesayers stuff) here in MN i've talked to agrees that this album is just weird. we were all so excited; he's easily tied for the best rapper out of mn (with POS)... it's just a travesty that this steaming pile of **** is what we got.

Thanks for clarifying, I can at least see where your coming from now. It just annoys me when people argue that white people only like conscious hip hop, because while that stereotype often rings true, I've got white friends who are some of most passionate people I know on varying hip hop styles.

In regards to the Brother Ali album, I can definitely see your points on his choice of subject matter, I was just listening through it and enjoying some of the beats. I don't think it's complete garbage, but I guess it looks pretty weak next to Never Better.

kingsoby1 10-20-2009 09:38 AM

I really like these cuts off that record:

"Breakin' Dawn"
"The Travelers"
"Round Here"
"Games"
"Slippin' Away"

If he put out an EP with those tracks only, I'd probably be singing a different tune... but I just cant stand the rest :[

Jaundice 10-20-2009 10:10 AM

hey i'm white and i refuse to even touch conscious hip hop

kingsoby1 10-20-2009 10:50 AM

i'm half white, and half the hip-hop i like is conscious.

illmitch 10-20-2009 11:06 AM

i'm white and i got into hip hop through conscious hip hop

......and now i can't stand it.

it seems to me that white people - the white people from stuffwhitepeoplelike, not the ethnicity as a whole - tend to spring for the conscious rap, and those that move beyond that still tend to cling to NY-centric rap.

Professor Frink 10-20-2009 12:35 PM

there's this phrase i've heard in two different songs.
"i don't rhyme for the sake of riddlin," or maybe it says "ritalin," i dunno.
where did that come from?

i heard it in a dilated peoples song and a song by the roots.

speaking of the roots, i'd like to hear more groups like them.
suggestions?

I think sometimes peopel fall back on it because it seems more "credible". Like some people can be like "Oh, don't worry, I listen to conscious rap".

Kyle 10-20-2009 01:05 PM

Like when you read a review from somebody who obviously isn't into hip hop saying something to the effect of... "Isn't it refreshing to hear a hip hop act not rapping about guns and bitches".

That annoys the crap out of me.

Rams 10-20-2009 01:27 PM

I am white and I feel like liking/disliking rap based on other people's opinions makes you a dumbass.

It's a famous line from Public Enemy ("Don't Believe the Hype"). Dilated Peoples are known to pay homage to a lot of famous rappers. Don't know about the Roots, I think it's because their MC is crap.

someone explain "conscious hip hop". ive never even heard that term.

ATM 10-20-2009 09:07 PM

In the olden days of white culture, people used to look up to Kings and Princes. These were the people that they adored, and every night they wished and hoped that somehow they could wake up and be just like them. But with Royal Families crumbling, that role has been filled by one man: Mos Def.

He is everything that white people dream about: authentic (”he’s from Brooklyn!”), funny (”he was on Chapelle show!”), artistic (have you heard “Black on Both Sides?”), an actor (”he’s in the new Gondry film!”) and not white (”I don’t see race”).

He has done an amazing job of being in big budget movies (The Italian Job) and having one of his songs become a white person wedding staple (Ms. Fat Booty) but still retaining authenticity and credibility.

If you find yourself in a social situation where you are asked to list your favorite actor or artist, you should always say Mos Def. This way you can name someone that everyone has heard of and you don’t look like you are trying to one up anybody. The only possible negative consequence is some white people might think “I wish I had said that first.”

illmitch 10-20-2009 10:06 PM

i wouldn't say that it's necessarily just socially conscious hip hop - you can be socially conscious without being conscious rap, e.g. Bun B - Get Cha Issue, Z-Ro - Another Song, Killer Mike - Pressue. i'd say its hip hop whose primary concern is being socially conscious, and which takes this as a higher concern over say interesting lyrics or production. it's when the song's main talking point is "he says xyz about the american government", not "he uses a complex rhyme scheme" or "he spits over a really good beat".

Anyone listened to Diamond District? Washington trio consisting of Oddisee, X.O and YU.

They're just releasing their debut this month, and on first listen it sounds really good.
