It did come out pretty sloppy, but not too bad.

So I just ran out of spray adhesive.
Le sigh. |
Get four or five pieces of blank card, about 2 and a half feet long and a foot wide. Line them up so they form a neat square, with the blank bit facing down. Tape along the seams were one card ends and another begins, and voilla! You have a blank placard that you can fold up to be just 2 1/2 feet long and 1 foot wide without creasing the cards. Now just draw your design on the blank part. I wrote Protect Free Speech on mine with a pencil, just to see if it fits. Then I thickened the writing with the pencil, then I got a black permanent marker and filled it in properly. Gave the marker a few minutes to dry out properly, folded it up, and marched out to Parliament Square. That took me less than half an hour to make.
I used advertising cards I liberated from the Tube, they're pretty sturdy but they're thin, which is good, and they can be rolled up without much damage to the card. |

You could put the wheatpaste in a bottle in your bag, along with a brush. THen just roll up the poster. And when wheatpaste dries it's nearly impossible to get off. I wonder if that even made sense.. |
Yeah, I know what you mean. But this is the sort of placard you use for holding at protests. The problem is that the cops have patrols around planned protest zones on the day and when they see a bunch of kids holding placards and walking in that direction, they give us hassle.

I used a big stencil to make a big "BLACK POWER!" fist on my civil rights timeline for school. I also have a picture of Martin Luther King, Jr. shooting pool behind his back.
|
im very much into urban exploration and odd buildings in general and i found this one website some time ago that documented all these strange buildings in my county/state. it was kind of like a Weird "your state here" magazine without the little kids from hot topic driving two hours to see a penis-shaped tree. anyway, on the site once i saw that whoever made the site posted this abandoned building in my city that i never knew about and on one of the walls someone spraypainted the ghost-mascot from Ghostbusters with it's fist in the air (instead of one or two fingers) and it said "Black Power" in the ghostbusters font.
it was pretty hilarious. by the time i found the land that the person documented, both the stencil and the majority of the building had been demolished. |
Bummer. I finally managed to get a copy of the Squatters Handbook, next time I have a free Sunday or Saturday, I'll probably scan it onto PDF, or photocopy it.

Justin, have you heard of using transparencies (like the stuff they use for overhead projectors at schools) for multi-layered stencils? Print out the layers onto transparencies, and since it's clear, it's easier to line up one image on top of the next.
I saw someone doing something similar to this on some site (but I'm not exactly sure if it's the same material), and I was just wondering if you knew if this worked or not. |
those things are probably expensive.
|
those things are probably expensive.
Not really. If my teacher was willing to just give some to me, they can't be that bad. I'll just go to office max and see. If they are expensive, then oh well, I go back to posterboard. But I just printed of a transparency with two of my photos on it. For my photography class if you want a negative image, you have to go through this difficult process in a very dim darlight (dimmer than usual) and use really expensive paper that is very delicate. With this, I just print off my images, and don't even worry about using my teacher's expensive paper. |
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's not that expensive, and it seems like a really goo way to do multi-layered stencils.
|
transparency paper = comes in really small packages + usually quite expensive
|
I've got some acetate lying around that would be great for multilayers but I still need to find something decent to use it for.
When I make my multilayers I just use normal paper, normally laminated for each layer. But it can be hard to line up good. |
ive tried overhead transparency sheets, aka clear cover sheets that you can get from any copy center that does binding (book reports that need a shiny thin plastic cover) and they cost about 7 cents. i used to work in a copy center. i tried the acetate overlay sheets as well as a folder-style laminate laminated to itself (a thick sheet of plastic). both work pretty well and are generally easy to clean because its plastic.
also, you can go to a staples or something, as for one of their boxes of black and white transparency sheets (theyve got tons) and tell them you're gonna be doing some self-serve copies onto transparency sheets. when they're not looking, generally when they're busy, shove a large amount of the sheets into a folder in your backpack, the 3 stencil copies onto the transparency sheets and have her ring you up for 3 transparency copies. if you're going to use acetate overlays for stencils, i'd suggest getting some spray adhesive. i've personally never done it with adhesive but it seems to me that itd work out pretty well. spray the bottom side of the stencil lightly with some spray adhesive. wait a few seconds for the spray to harden slightly and then put the stencil on your shirt. tape it down if you want to be extra careful. ive done t-shirt printing with transparency sheets and its worked just fine, the same as if i used a sheet of cardstock. transparency's better because it doesnt warp with paint, and you can just rinse it off, dry it with a paper towel and use the stencil again. ps: i wrote out a bunch of tutorials on diy-auction.com/diy. search jono or justin toxicated and you'll see my ****. jono's a handle i went by back in the day. |
Btw I've made so many stencils and gone through so much paint, but I've never made any type of clothing using them.
I'm more of a street artist. Actually I've never made any type of clothing full stop. Is there like an..Official Street Art thread anywhere? |
I've made about three pieces of clothing from my stencils. They're supposed to be for street art, but spray paint is expensive and I am just plain lazy.

My spray paint costs me like..$2.50 a can. Which is like...99c in America or something. |

I bought spray-paint here once, it was a ****ty blue and it cost me a fiver. It also goes runny if the temperatur is too cold, ie. it always is here. |

Speaking of street art, I hear AC/DC lane in Melbourne has some sick stuff, you been there? |
There's an AC/DC Lane!?
/Puts Melbourne on his To-Do List. |
Yeah, but the sign itself looks retarded. They left out the lightning bolt,. so someone put up their own lightning bolt but it's too big.
|
How the hell do you have AC/DC without the lightning bolt?
|
haha @ AC(no lightning)DC
