I love the first solo in Another Day, his tone.. :naughty:
i personally love his ernie ball tone much more than his ibanez tone.
but yea...great solo. playable as well, which is rare in DT repertoire :upset:

Jev 05-11-2006 01:02 AM

The whole song would be playable if it wasn't for that 1 bar of shreds

Enlighten Me 05-11-2006 01:19 AM

lol, yeah wtf

Jev 05-11-2006 03:17 AM

It's Petrucci doing it to mock us.

I can play Silent Man though.

Yeah me too, its pretty fun to play with an acoustic.

Lord Abortion 05-11-2006 09:15 AM

I like Octavarium for the most part.
Panic attack and never enough drag on a little though.

Jev 05-11-2006 09:27 AM

Panic Attack's my favourite song on the album. I love it.

Enlighten Me 05-11-2006 10:38 AM

At first listen Panic Attack and Never Enough weren't really that great.
But they grew on me, oh how they grew.

jpshortstuff 05-11-2006 01:18 PM

yeah Panic Attack is my fav song on that album, because im usually much more into the heavy stuff. The rest is gradually growing on me though, like most DT is/did.

Jev 05-11-2006 01:30 PM

It was my favourite right from the start. When the guitars and drums first kicked in I was like

Triangle 05-11-2006 01:31 PM

I thought I was on a roll when I started to learn the solo from Another Day.... until I got to the one bar shred part. :upset:

Jev 05-11-2006 01:35 PM

Exactly what happened to me :(

Josh 05-11-2006 02:38 PM

i still haven't heard Octavarium. Ollie, fancy bringing it in? or you want to do it after i send you those albums?

Lord Abortion 05-11-2006 02:43 PM

Yeah, no worries, I'll give ye it on the morro.

Josh 05-11-2006 02:45 PM

nice, thanks a lot. :)

/happy.

Element of LED 435 05-11-2006 04:23 PM

is dream theater going to play at Gigantour2???
is the end of the 20th anniversary tour the end of dream theater touring and making new albums??
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO JOHN RUDDESS!! lol but seriously does anyone know the first two?

mutant! 05-11-2006 05:28 PM

So, yeah, Sad But True hooked me up with Scenes From A Memory. It's the first time I've heard Dream Theater, and I've got to say, for all the hype surrounding Petrucci and whoever the keys player is, they disappointed me greatly. IMO they suck. Petrucci is quite obviously a brilliant guitarist, but I can't hear where the keyboard player's reputation comes from. And I hate the whole cheese-metal sound they have going. And I detest the singer's voice. And that one tune - Home - with what sounds like a chick getting her brains humped out in the background was just off-putting. I actually only just heard the first (remotely) good keyboard part on this entire album (I'm listening as I type), in The Dance Of Eternity, at about 3:45.

Anyway. Am I missing something? Is this just a sh1t album, or was I just not meant to appreciate their music?

Deth 05-11-2006 05:28 PM

Yeah, just give up with Dream Theater. That's possibly their finest album and I love it beyond belief.

To Elements of LED, I really have no idea about Gigantour. It's Megadeth's tour, but I would think they will play it this year. Here's hoping.

I'm sure they will continue to release new albums as well.

Lord Abortion 05-11-2006 05:31 PM

Yeah, Mutant, just give up on DT now then, and possibly life too.

GenuineImitation 05-11-2006 06:20 PM
is dream theater going to play at Gigantour2???
No. They are taking time off.
is the end of the 20th anniversary tour the end of dream theater touring and making new albums??
No, they are taking time off to write new material and spend time with their families.

The album is one of their best, so I can safely say you wont enjoy most DT. You may like Train of Thought or Octavarium though.
It's Petrucci doing it to mock us.

Yeah, Silent Man is great fun to play/sing along to (even though my voice is beyond horrible. Seriously, I couldn't hit a note for my life.)

Element of LED 435 05-11-2006 08:42 PM

im afraid when dream theater gets older cuz then they might stop making some of the only good music that is made today, then ill be stuck listening to oldies becuz basically dream theater is the only current band around that i listen to besides godsmack

NP: Strange Deja Vu

ghettoeddo 05-12-2006 12:19 AM

that cool riff in the middle of strange deja vu is amazing. i think petrucci used a fender for that :O

they'll make new albums for sure. portnoy wants to finish his 12-step deal. and as much as i love octavarium...i think they could end much stronger. i personally wanna see them take their music into a NEW direction, rather than regressive into the old I&W/awake days. it's been done, and the whole idae of prog rock/metal is to push new boundaries and try new things...

so that's what im hoping for. i know whatever they do, i'll be pleased.

badtaste 05-12-2006 06:02 AM

Dream Theater stopped making good music after Scenes from a memory. I haven't listened to any Dream Theater music in a few months. I guess I've grown out of them.

Enlighten Me 05-12-2006 06:18 AM

You don't understand, you cannot grow out of them.
Dream Theater owns you.

Lord Abortion 05-12-2006 06:50 AM

Yeah, I really can't possibly see how anyone could dislike James' vocals either

ghettoeddo 05-12-2006 12:20 PM

at some times, james's vox are less than ace.
but he's definitely great :]

NP: blind faith = current fave song off of SDOIT

To me, everything they do rules.
I'm a DT whore.

GenuineImitation 05-12-2006 01:21 PM

DT can not make any mistakes. They are gods among mortals.

Enlighten Me 05-12-2006 01:29 PM

Seriously, i haven't heard a DT song i disliked.

GenuineImitation 05-12-2006 01:30 PM
Seriously, i haven't heard a DT song i disliked.
Same here. My least favorite is 6:00, but it is still a great song.

Jev 05-12-2006 01:31 PM

Same here. I say I don't like say Burning My Soul but to be honest I don't dislike it like I do something by the Arctic Monkeys

Lord Abortion 05-12-2006 01:41 PM

Possibly you not me, or something off WDADU...otherwise no.
DT are Godly.

Atica 05-12-2006 02:06 PM

DT are the God of music. They are just so perfect at their songs.

Element of LED 435 05-12-2006 03:57 PM

only song i dont like anymore is as i am
i used to love it but i guess after listening to it alot i only really like the intro but the rest to me is a little cheesy

Enlighten Me 05-12-2006 04:02 PM

Well yeah try not to overdo it.
Kinda hard though, like when you first get an album and you can barley put it down for the next 2 weeks :p

Jev 05-12-2006 04:07 PM

How is the intro cheesy?

Lord Abortion 05-12-2006 04:08 PM

I think James should lay off the Hetfield impression in that song...

Element of LED 435 05-12-2006 04:33 PM
How is the intro cheesy?
no i said i like the intro only like when portnoy starts the drums and it gets faster

the rest of the song besides that sounds cheesy to me at least

badtaste 05-12-2006 08:42 PM

I take my post back. They stopped making good music after 6DOIT (The Glass Prison kicks ***).

Listen to yourselves, people! Dream Theater do make crappy songs. To say that all their work kicks ***, is being arrogant.

"I walk beside you" sucked. Octavarium could have been better (The bloody song isn't a whole song - it's a series of songs put together. Compare it to ACOS). They're not even progressing any more, all their songs are metally now.
