lol @ objectivity

Valhall 01-03-2008 10:03 PM

I apologise for trying to view things objectively.

Wait, no I don't.

I simply feel that melody contributes to atmosphere, darkness, isolationism, etc. that is present in the best black metal. If I want pure chaos and anger, I will typically listen to grindcore, not black metal. Not saying I don't listen to purely aggressive black metal; I just think the best black metal has melody and that's what sets the good bands apart from the rest.

Regardless, this discussion will go nowhere, so let's discuss something else.

Silenius 01-03-2008 11:50 PM

Lunar Aurora made a good album in 2007.

and...

discuss!

Angmar 01-03-2008 11:52 PM

Damn straight they did, their 3 most recent releases plus the split with Paysage d'Hiver all rule. Great band. :)

Silenius 01-03-2008 11:53 PM

Yeah, I kinda wish had been at their gig with Darkspace a few years ago, must have been a crazy experience.

Angmar 01-03-2008 11:56 PM

Damn that would have been awesome, too bad they are taking a break for awhile, oh well. Just makes me hope Darkspace get their new album out soon.

Valhall 01-03-2008 11:56 PM

Have not heard; I'll have to check them out.

tbh I don't know many good ones, but I do like at least two such bands, one being Sacramentum, and the other being Sorhin. There is also Vinterland, they're decent.

Of those three I recommend Sorhin, I Det Glimrande Mörkrets Djup is the album I have and it is really good stuff imo.

pate 01-04-2008 11:27 AM

The only thing objective about music is that it travels to the ear in waves.

i am the robots 01-04-2008 11:37 AM

And whether or not a musician is sloppy brah.

masscows 01-04-2008 11:38 AM

Uh, alot of black metal that isn't "melodic" black metal has melody anyway, so saying black metal and melody don't mix is stupid.

i am the robots 01-04-2008 11:40 AM

My favorite non-melodic black metal band is Darkthrone \m/

you're taking what I said to seriously dude

BM is already to ridiculous and over the top so I prefer to take mine without the useless guitar and keyboard wankery of melo BM.

rattlehead42147 01-04-2008 12:42 PM

Sorhin doesn't wank or use keyboards, which makes them good melodic black metal, I think you might like them.

Apocalypticon 01-04-2008 12:50 PM

I've heard Sorhin and didn't really like them. although I agree that not having the keyboards is a definite advantage for them

rattlehead42147 01-04-2008 01:02 PM

did you hear "I Det Glimrande Morkrets Djup" specifically? It might be their only good one for all I know.

NemesisDivina 01-04-2008 01:12 PM

Apoc (I think it's Steve)

Do you have an RYM or last.fm?

Apocalypticon 01-04-2008 01:28 PM

yeah its steve

last.fm = stevieC
rym = uncooley

but I just got RYM and never really use it so its very lacking

NemesisDivina 01-04-2008 01:37 PM

k i added you on last.fm

Valhall 01-04-2008 01:42 PM

Melody (well, well-done melody) shows a good ear and decent songwriting ability, IMO. There's nothing over the top about it. Granted, not every band can pull of the whole "epic" thing, but that doesn't mean it sucks.

pate 01-04-2008 02:19 PM

Melodywriting ability, not songwriting ability.

Valhall 01-04-2008 02:28 PM

A talent, nonetheless.

NemesisDivina 01-04-2008 06:17 PM

He knows he has a point, he just put it in a funny way.

Valhall 01-04-2008 06:51 PM

Didn't look like it.

talent =/= good songwriting
