First comment is what I love about youtube I have no idea what this crap vid is about though |
For the popularity of Shure SM57 mics for recording instruments, no one fucking has them in store. WTF?
|
I'll lend you mine.
|
so i'm working on technique for the first time in like 5 years and man, mine has died. I went from being able to cleanly alt pick at 160 to struggling to stay on the downbeat at 120 D:
One plus though, I forgot how much I enjoy it and how nice it is to see progress in cleanliness of playing and finger dexterity. I'm going to try and stick with it and work on different exercises and what not outside of alt picking which is all i did in highschool and early college. now that i'm interested in sweeping and all that crap, i have to start slowwww and develop ideas that aren't simply diatonic shape moving around the fretboard in one key. |
i've used my sm57 like 4 times in the 3ish years i've owned it.
recording direct is just so much easier. if theres one thing i have no patience for in recording, its micing stuff up. |
I'd probably have to invest in a good sound card to do that. I acquired Fruity Loops the other day and have been basically using it as a drum machine. Though I wanted to get some stuff down, and Peavey XXX FX Loop -> Audio Buddy -> Computer sounds like garbage. Sounds like it just went through a crap filter.
I know FX loop recording isn't optimal, but I don't have a direct line out. So I'm getting a mic and hope it doesn't sound like crap. Though if it does, then I guess I'm just S.O.L. and will just record my ideas like I use to; my Sony Digital Camera. Josh: What practice routines are you using? I'm really bad at keeping up with routines, but after college when I came back I was just crap sloppy when I tried to do something at a decent speed. Noodling on A Minor Blues for 2 months has helped that a little, but still wondering if you do anything past the basic 1-2-3-4, 2-3-4-5, etc. etc. or just 1-2-3-4 on low E, 1-2-3-4 on A, etc. etc. techniques up and down the board. |
if you're recording wiht the fx out, try running it into some impulses, that might make it sound more realistic.
|
i basically do 3 note per string exercises up and down the neck
for instance i'll start with E major then go to F major, F# major, etc. doing 3 note per string ascending, descending, ascending with descending intervals, descending with ascending intervals. then i'll do that modally, so F# dorian, G dorian, Ab dorian, etc. for all the modes. right now i'm at about 100-105 comfortably on the down beat with it clean. i'm probably going to slow it down a little bit more to clean it up even more, i really want to cut the slack. i may also work with chromatic finger exercises but the scale work does so much for your hands already, i'll have to see. |
classic rockers play like, three notes, for a thousand people
shred heads play like, a thousand notes for three people |
aw look josh and LFD are getting along

to be honest i was surprised when the last sentence wasn't an insult of some kind
classic rockers play like, three notes, for a thousand people
shred heads play like, a thousand notes for three people
don't get me wrong, i'm not a big fan of shred but there are guitarists who i like that play well. i was into shred when i was 15 and 16, the ages I think it's acceptable to have that mindset. as of late, i've really fallen in love with jazz and pop music, so now i try to write rock tunes with experimentation and nontraditional chords/progressions but have accessible hooks and passages that people can enjoy. at the same time, there's nothing wrong with having a little technical proficiency. |
I've ran across more than one guy who could shred, but if you turn the metronome below a certain B.P.M. (usually like 90) they couldn't stay on beat. Versatility is key in my opinion. What good is it if you can play 16th notes at 160 B.P.M. but can't play quarter notes at 60 B.P.M.?
edit: Picked up a SM57 at GC, can't get Fruity Loops to recognize the bastard is plugged in. However it sounds good using windows recorder. :upset: |
it's hard to do certain things at slower speeds because it becomes more difficult to anticipate the beat, particularly if you're doing odd number groupings where notes in the pattern don't always fall on the downbeat until the 3rd or 4th pass.

I'm just plugging it into the mic in port. Basically what I have going is: SM57 -> Audio Buddy -> Mic In -> Fruity Loops. Mobo is a EVGA X58 SLI Classified. It isn't a dedicated sound card, but by no means is it a cheap mobo with bad sound built in. I'm new to recording, so if there is something I'm missing anything is helpful. I'm not using anything like a Firebox. that has the audio card built into the system. Just the boost from the Audio-Buddy. The ASIO4ALL V2 driver that Fruity Loops told me to install (so it could sense the mic) shows it in the list. Though in Fruity Loops, it is lacking from the list. |
So yeah, I've fractured both knuckles on my left ring finger; there goes my summer of gigs.
|
Punched an old lady?
|
Totally.
If by old lady you mean field and by punched you mean landed on trying to get to 4th base in a game of rounders. >_> |
everyone petition for rep to be reinstated so i can get all the rep in the world for this movie

Yeah, I've nothing against technical proficiency, as long as someone knows when to use it and when to leave well alone.
I'm just plugging it into the mic in port. The mic in jack is designed for the audio equivalent of a telephone/skype headset: very high impedance and poor frequency response. Two choices: -Cheaper and not worth it in my opinion: get a cheap behringer mixer to plug the mic into and plug the output into the line in of your computer: still uses the internal soundcard, which won't be great -Worth it- go on ebay and get a cheap 2x2 audio interface with XLR inputs, a headphone AND line outs, etc and you'll still be finding uses for it for years |
a while back i was looking for an interface, and the line6 toneports interested me, because not only did they have xlr inputs on the front and USB connectivity, but they also had built-in models so if i was too lazy to mic something up i could just use the models.
down side is, after i got one, i realized it was way easier to just use the models, and then i didn't mic stuff up at all really. not the best sound quality cos its line6, but its still pretty decent i'd say. my former flatmate got some m-audio box on ebay for cheap, and it was of lower sound quality. i think it retailed like 150 or so. |
Line 6 make some really quality stuff; we can't ignore how bad the spider IIs were, but the M9/13 is an amazing bit of kit, and there are some absolute gems in the **4 and tonecore series
If I can get Fruity Loops to recognize the thing I'll be fine for now. If I get serious in recording I'll pick up a Firebox and some decent monitors. Thanks for the suggestions though. Maybe next spring after I've payed off my school loans and car I'll pick up a Firebox. Every time I've looked into recording systems every one is like get one, get one, get one! |
firebox is overkill for some people, but they're good units.
Like most music stuff something 2/3 as good will cost 1/3 as much, like. |
