Post Rock isn't a trend, it's just been getting more recognition from mainstream magazines and stuff. I doubt it will go much farther past that, though, namely because there's no way these tunes could get significant radio play.

AA-12 01-13-2007 11:23 AM

Sigur Ros was my gateway, and still by far my favorite.

Kyle 01-13-2007 11:26 AM

I think this genre has turned really snobby since it's become semi-popularised. I think it's nice to see that a band like Explosions in the Sky can acchieve success, and only says positive things about the music industry at the moment. I know they can be quite boring and derrivative at times, but by the same extent I don't think they make bad music.

I heard Sigur Rós on mtv. That is surely a definitive sign of a trend. >:-[

I need their debut still. Ugh.

Kage 01-13-2007 11:28 AM

Sigur Ros has been pretty big for a while.

They sold out one of the biggest music venues in Houston.

Txus 01-13-2007 11:29 AM

Which was the first Post Rock band?

Dr. Jake Destructo 01-13-2007 11:30 AM

They're definitely the biggest post rock band right now.

Must be their Radiohead similarities or something.

Because it's obvious that it's not their actual music that garnishes so much attention...

Txus - Bark Psychosis, Slint, Talk Talk, Tortoise, I think all are first wave post rock.

Kage 01-13-2007 11:32 AM
Which was the first Post Rock band?
Arguably Bark Psychosis, since if I'm not mistaken the term was coined when describing them. But really the roots of stuff like this was going on in the 70s so idk.

Txus 01-13-2007 11:34 AM

Yeah, I don't mean the roots. I just wanted to know which band was the first to be called "Post Rock". Bark Psychosis sound good, I've heard the name before....I should look for them.

Dr. Jake Destructo 01-13-2007 11:38 AM

I still haven't heard any first wave post rock.

/nub

Txus 01-13-2007 11:41 AM

I've heard Talk Tallk and Tortoise and I didn't like them :-\

Kage 01-13-2007 12:19 PM

You might like Bark Psychosis though. Hex and Codename:Dustsucker are awesome albums.

Txus 01-13-2007 12:23 PM

I take that's Codename: Dustsucker :p

Nice, I'll try to get my hands over those albums.

NuclearRabbit 01-13-2007 01:16 PM
i realised there are a couple of great Godspeed you black emperor songs like 'speed garage' in limewire but they are not in any album..
If nobody answered this, I will.
If somebody did, I still will.

'Speed Garage' is a part of 'Antennas'. I was asked what the favourite GY!BE song of mine was, and I said 'Speed Garage'. And then I found out.. YOU KNOW!

Oh, and post-rock kicks ***.

Kyle 01-13-2007 03:30 PM

Been digging Mogwai's Mr. Beast today, I think I overlooked it on my first listen.
Been digging Mogwai's Mr. Beast today, I think I overlooked it on my first listen.
So am I, as you just gave me a link for it :p

Sigur Ros are boring...

Kyle 01-13-2007 03:35 PM

Sigur Ros hate on the other hand......:(

Neoteric 01-13-2007 03:38 PM

I've tried to get into them loads of times but I came to the conclusion that they are just boring.

AA-12 01-13-2007 03:39 PM

There are more interesting than most bands out there, foo'

bwnstl 01-13-2007 04:21 PM

I agree. How can you think Sigur Ros is boring and yet like Mogwai?

Elmo McCheese 01-13-2007 05:02 PM

I guess Pelican would be Post-Metal, right?

Eliminator 01-13-2007 05:27 PM
I've heard Talk Tallk and Tortoise and I didn't like them :-\

I guess Pelican would be Post-Metal, right?
Yeah, Pelican is post metal.

I used to have my post rock folder separate from my post metal one - in fact, my post metal one was in a subfolder of Doom & Atmospheric Metal.

Recently I've just combined post rock and post metal in a folder together, on the same level as rock, metal and jazz etc. When music becomes atmospheric, it transcends genres, and there's no denying that many so called 'post rock' bands can become rather heavy at times. TBH, it's better to keep them together.

GY!BE
Isis
Jaga Jazzist

Mogwai
Pelican
Red Sparowes
Sigur Ros
Slint

EDIT: I bought my tickets already to see EITS in Detroit march 26th

Eliminator 01-14-2007 04:46 PM

get Laughing Stock by talk talk

Kyle 01-14-2007 06:21 PM

Listening to & Yet & Yet by DMST right now, it's really tight.

Kayetan 01-14-2007 06:31 PM

I don't get how Goodbye Enemy Airship, the Landlord Is Dead isn't considered dmst's best album by far. I like their other stuff and all, but that album is amazing. Some consider it their weakest album though.

Txus - Bark Psychosis, Slint, Talk Talk, Tortoise, I think all are first wave post rock.
Yes, but the Durutti Column too, imo.
I agree. How can you think Sigur Ros is boring and yet like Mogwai?
Sigur Ros has just always been ambient noise to me while Mogwai are more structured so to say.

Concubine 01-15-2007 09:55 AM

Weird, for me its the other way around. I like Sigur Ros, but i think Mogwai are boring as hell

Eliminator 01-15-2007 09:55 AM
