Edgefest '06 Tempe, AZ 9/30/06

A Change of Pace:
These were the main stage openers and our first stop for the day. The venue wasn't packed so early in the day, understandably since it was ~100 out at the time, but these guys still put a lot into their show. Admittedly, I have both of their CDs but neither has ever been in heavy rotation for me, so I wasn't too familiar with their songs, but they put a lot of energy in and were entertaining openers.

Sparta:
These guys played second on the mainstage and though I'm not a fan of the band in particular, they did a good job, more or less. The fact that the band was out of tune for half of the set was a little discouraging and, well, unprofessional, but they did finally get in tune and that was nice. They felt like a watered down At the Drive-In to me though so I wasn't huge on the music. If they had had Omar up there on guitar I may have dug it a lot more though.

After this we wandered over to the local band stage for awhile because we had no desire to see She Wants Revenge. Alas the local stage was running an hour late so we stayed for the bands we'd planned on seeing anyways and missed Jack's Mannequin as well...which was a reputedly bad show anyways so good riddance I guess.

Seconds to Breathe:
This was easily the most aggressive promoting band at the festival. They had a lot of flyers and put a lot into attracting people to their show. Alas, the one hour delay dude to technical difficulties drove many of the curious bystanders away and their crowd was pretty dead by the time they played. They had a lot of energy, but I didn't particularly dig the music. Great crowd interaction though and they gave away a lot of free merch to attract new fans. Very classy.

Thousand Yard Stare:
While STB was attempting to fix the technical difficulties, the frontman for TYS was doing a good job of interacting with the crowd around there, very friendly, also giving out free merch before they even played. The set itself was better that STB as far as my tastes go although their set was not as energetic in my opinion. I did enjoy it more due to the music though.

Vitruvian:
Second time seeing them, amazingly, this time they were on an even smaller stage than last time. They ended up in the crowd a little bit even because they like to move around and keep the energy flowing. Todd wasn't a big fan of the music but I enjoy it. I think these guys are going to potentially be the next big Arizona band. They fit the local scene well and put a lot into their shows.

Captain Squeegee and the Soap Suds:
Second time seeing these guys as well, first time was opening for Streetlight Manifesto last year. They've matured a lot since then and put on a real good show with some great tunes and even have put together a CD I'll be picking up soon. If not Vitruvian I could see these guys also becoming the next big AZ band. Lots of energy, very friendly, all smiles on stage. Upbeat just like their music.

Now we wandered back to the main stage for the duration of the evening:

Authority Zero:
Probably the craziest crowd of the night. I was highly anticipating these guys and though Todd found them boring, I really enjoyed it. I mean, by the middle of the first song, trash bins were crowd surfing, you know it's going to be a good show. Besides the garbage bins, another highlight was the lead singer climbing up one of the stage pillars part of the way, and then leaping into the crowd. They actually caught him and it was pretty sweet.

30 Seconds to Mars:
Well, Jared Leto is an actor. As such, he likes to have a stage presence. Alas, he has so much stage presence they only played I think 6 or 7 songs in a 45 minute set, and their songs aren't that long. The were best the first time I saw them. They play too few songs because they talk a lot and they never play old stuff anymore. They could be great if they had a little less bull****.

There was a little but of space between sets so in the mean time the cameras were scanning the crowd. Well the got to this one girl on the shoulders of some guy, and, well, her shirt started to make its way up, and all of a sudden the camera feed died...to lots of booing. This happened several times before Todd and I realized she was about 100 feet away, and then we got to see boobs even after the camera feed died, good times. Even better was the dad who picked his son up to see it over the crowd. I hope to be that cool of a dad if I ever get into the whole family thing. Hell, if I have kids, they're going to Metal shows with me.

Rise Against:
Once again, great. Almost the same set list as when I saw them at Warped this year disappointingly, but besides that a great set. the crowd was too dead at this point for anyone to die alas, but that allowed us to get closer than I'd expected which ended up being real cool. During their set I ran out of water and was screaming enough that my memory starts to go from here on and I was a bit out of it towards the end of the set. Awesome though. At the end the hosts told us there was a crowd of 20000 people there which seems high but if true is amazing.

Incubus:
I was very out of it for this set. Headbanging plus dehydration and general fatigue really took its toll on me here. I don't remember a lot of it and I'm pretty sure I passed out a few times. Given that teh energy put me to sleep, I can't give it the best review, and it didn't get me into the band at all as I found it to be pretty mediocre, but the people there to see Incubus had a great time. Hell, it was their first show in 2 years in the US they said, so I'm sure it was quite the show to see. What I remember of it was pretty decent at least...but I was in a lot of pain and out of it so I was in too bad of a mood to properly enjoy it either way.

Wow, it's been forever since I posted anything in here.

-

So, anyway, last night I went to see KMFDM and Combichrist. It was unlike anything I have ever seen.

To start, I have never seen so many 'goths' in one place in my life. For those of you who don't know, KMFDM is an industrial band, and apparently 'goths' like that kind of thing.

It was also the loudest show I've ever been to. I thought my head was going to explode.

Combichrist (http://myspace.com/combichrist)
These guys are from Norway, apparently. Having never heard any of there music, I didn't know what to expect. I knew they were an industrial band, but that was about it.

They played for about an hour, and I was pretty much blown away. They had an awesome light display (as did KMFDM), and they set was high energy. They got a huge reception from the crowd as well.

KMFDM (http://www.myspace.com/officialkmfdm)
These guys were originally from Germany, which explains why a good part of their set wasn't in english. Either way, they were really good. They played about an hour and a half, and for the most part, people seemed to be really into it.

I got the idea some people were only there to see Combichrist though, based on the fact that a few people where shouting "KMFDM sucks" when everyone else was calling for an encore.

Either way, awesome night. I never would have imagined myself at an industrial show, but it was really cool.

Combichrist is pretty sick.

I didn't know you were into industrial stuff.

woo

Those are basically the only two industrial bands I've ever listened to.

Free shows ftw. :D

Anyway, I might as well write up a quick review of another interesting show I went to...

Bukue One (w/ Tee Double)

http://myspace.com/bukueone
http://myspace.com/teedouble

So, yeah, this was a hip-hop show. I listen to very little hip-hop, but my dad was asked to bartend the show, so I went.

Bukue one and Tee Double were a pretty awesome intro to my first-ever hip-hop show. I especially liked Tee Double's freestyle.

Psalm (w/ Longshot)

http://myspace.com/psalmone
http://myspace.com/longshot

I wasn't as into these guys as I was the first two (^), but they weren't bad.

Mike Relm

http://myspace.com/mikerelm

This guy was insane. He was just a DJ, so all he did was mix, but it was crazy. He had a video behind him which match up perfectly with everything he did. So cool.

Del Tha Funky Homosapien (w/A-Plus)

http://myspace.com/delthefunkyhomosapien
http://www.myspace.com/a_p_l_u_s

I like these guys a lot as well. Overall, the whole show was cool, because it wasn't the kind of hip-hop/rap that you hear on the radio.

Industrial, hip-hop, death metal. I'm going to a rockabilly/psychobilly show soon, another death metal show, I was supposed to go to a reggae show. It's been amazing.

Yeovil followed by London, you know it.

Last night I saw Death Cab For Cutie and Ted Leo And The Pharmacists. It was one of the best shows I've ever been too.

Ted Leo And The Pharmacists
So amazing. They played for about 40 minutes, but it seemed like no time at all.

The only disappointing part about their set was that half of the auditorium was empty when they played, and even at that, most people seemed to have no idea who they were. For a 2500+ person show, I thought they got a really poor response from the crowd.

Either way, they were still awesome.

Death Cab For Cutie
Death Cab was great as well. They played for about an hour and a half, and played pretty much everything I wanted to hear.

"I Will Follow You Into The Dark" was pretty much the best 3 minutes in recent memory.

Also, toward the end of the set, a second drumset was set-up, and played by Ben. The band just jammed with two drumsets, one guitar, and a bass for a good 15 minutes. It was really cool.

Overall, amazing night.

:D

Mute Print 10-30-2006 02:42 PM

So, yesterday I saw Hellogoodbye, Reggie And The Full Effect, Cute Is What We Aim For, and Dave Melillo... twice.

Since Cute is so big around here, and Hellogoodbye is becoming quite popular, they played two shows at the club I "work" at.

Dave Melillo
Seeing as he only has an EP, Dave Melillo played the same exact set both times. He was really good both times, though.

Cute Is What We Aim For
These guys played the same set both times as well. The only difference between the two sets was that the first song they played in the early show was the third song they played in the late one. As far as I could tell, that was the only difference in the two sets.

Although I feel that they are way too caught up in their "fame", I do like some of their music, so it was alright.

Also, during their first set, the barricade broke, and they had to take a ten minute break. Lame.

Reggie And The Full Effect
As a result of the barricade breaking during Cute's set, Reggie's first set got cut short. Also, the keyboard wasn't working, so they couldn't play much of a variety of songs. They were still awesome though.

The second RATFE set went much smoother. They got to play the full time, and the keyboard was working, so they played a lot of songs they didn't play earlier. They even covered "Reign In Blood" by Slayer. \m/

Overall, I'd say Reggie was the best performer of the day. Their music is great, and James (lead singer) is one of the funniest guys around. It's too bad not many people appreciated them. :-\

Hellogoodbye
Their first set was solid, but I was disappointed that they didn't play "Touchdown Turnaround". Luckily, they said they would be playing a whole different set at the late show.

As promised, Hellogoodbye mixed it up a lot for their second set. They played some "essential" songs at both shows ("Dear Jamie", "Shimmy Shimmy...", etc.), but overall, the sets were quite different.

For the encore of the second set, they played "Touchdown Turnaround", which was cool, followed by one of the most awesome covers I've ever seen...

"Fight For Your Right", by the Beastie Boys!

It was amazing. Both shows ended up being a lot of fun.

they all ruled. especially dtn. best bit was when they played 3 minor threat songs in a row.

plaidbassbilly 11-01-2006 07:33 AM

Melbourne Taste Of Chaos was like 3 weeks ago. Was pretty rad. Only bad part was I missed 3 bands just so I could meet Underoath. Was worth it. They played an awesome set too; In Regards To Myself, Its Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door, A Boy Brushed Red... Living In Black And White, Young And Aspiring, Writing On The Walls, Everyone Looks So Good From Here.. I think that was it. I really wanted to hear Reinventing Your Exit but meh.

Depends how much time they have because every time I have seen them they've been headlining. Both times I've seen them from TAYF they played, You Know How I Do, Bike Scene, Cute Without The E, Great Romances of the 20th Century, they played Ghost Man On Third one time, Timberwolves At New Jersey, and You're So Last Summer. I'm sure they will not play that many though. Prolly like three or four of those.

lunchforthesky 11-11-2006 09:04 PM

there headlining so i guess they will get between 40mins and an hour. where is theres no i in team on that list. thats one of their best songs. but i would probably settle for it guess. they dont write great song slike they used to.

DepthsOfDreams555 11-11-2006 09:47 PM

It's always bummed me out that they've never played that song when I've gone to see them but they haven't.

Taste of Chaos - Manchester, UK

Saosin
Ive never really liked sound, they sound generic and repetitive and this did little to change my mind. there wasnt much crowd reception for them but thats understandle seen as it was full of kids. I dont listen to them so cant comment on song choice. they played the song i know well, "seven years" but for some reason Cobe cant scream live and neither can anyone else in the band. So they just left out all screaming. This seemed pretty stupid to me but whatever.
5/10

Senses Fail
All the horror stories of buddy's awful vocals didnt seem to be true on the evidence of this performance. hes much improved since the last time i saw them and even though they only played "rum is for drinking" of their first album ill let that slide seen as they only had a thirty minute set and there coming back to the uk in february. they had plenty of energy and buddy has good stage precense. they did well of almost no crowd reception.
7/10

Underoath
They weren't especially bad but at the same weren't very good. the absense of reinventing your exit annoyed a lot of people who paid to see them. regardless of whether they like the song it would of made alot of people happy if they had just played it. otherwise they played a lot of new stuff and nothing pre-chasing safety. Devoting songs to jesus is not at all my style and was met with complete silence by the uk crowd.
6/10

Alexsionfire
Best band of the night by some way. but it was far from a classic performance. the problem with taste of chaos is that band sdont get very long to play their songs, which will always leave people unhappy at the setlist. still they played accidents, 44 calibre love letter, waterwings and this could be anywhere. i wish they had played some more of the first two albums but they had a thirty minute set and are back in february so ill see them again then. Dallas' voice was a little quiet but their singer seems quite a good entertainter onstage which surprised me.
8/10

Anti-Flag
Having heard Anti-Flag previously and knowing its not my thing, i made the executive decision to go to the fish and chip shop down the road instead of watching them.

Taking Back Sunday
Firstly Fred couldnt make it tonight for "family reasons" and while this is understandable it meant that i had paid £20 for half an hour of Alexis and a thrown together TBS performance, with no chance of a refund. Aside from that they played mostly new material with Vocalists from Underoath and Saosin and guitarist from Anti-flag and Saosin filling in. We got a just like heaven cover which was cool but it seemed i was the only guy there who'd ever heard the song before. They only played So Last Summer, CUte without the E and Decade Under the Influence from their back catalogue as well as coming on ten minutes late and not making up for it later. i know they had their reasons but it doesnt stop me being annoyed at the sub-par performance we got. Vocal wise the fill in s sounded almost exactly like Fred so no complaints there.
