Hey, thanks for the Jimmy info. It is shocking what drugs can do. These guys, top of the world, great musicians and talent. The only thing I can figure for something like heroin is they have some deep pain going on that not stardom, riches, or celebrity can take care of. And I suppose maybe that's the source of some of their work, too. Kind of a double edge sword.

And you know I understand some drug use. Perhaps even recreational. But heroin is a whole other ball game. Pete Townshend, who used heroin briefly but never shot it said it feels like "being wrapped in your mothers love". Interesting.

And I suppose it's a matter of pick your poison, also. Hell, it was drink that basically did Keith in. And even food for a time. Entwhistle drank all his life and it was a coke binge with two hookers that did him in. Induced a heart attack. The man was well into his fifties. You would figure their might be something learned in all those years. And most likely their is. But perhaps it just doen't matter when it's always "one last time". Which of course it never is if you keep using. It's just the first time all over again....

pigonthewing82 03-27-2006 07:51 PM

Roger's voice may not have the same range as it used to, but I think it still has a lot of power and emotion behind it. Whitch for me is all I care about, I could care less how much range you have just as long as you sing like you give a dam what your singing about. Pete's voice isn't bad today either. The lattest live recording I have of them is at the Royal Albert Hall in 2000. Their last show with John. It also comes with a bonus disk from 2002. It isn't stunning like Live at Leeds, but its still a very solid live album and well worth seeing them if thats what they still sound like. I remember their preformance at Live 8 was pretty good too.

Also a lot of new lyrics and instrumental parts to old songs. For example the song The Kids Are Allright has some great new lyrics to it. They are written from Pete's point of view of kids today and a reflection on his life.

zabbit82 03-27-2006 07:51 PM

And Bon Scott basically drank himself to death. Interesting what that stuff can do to ya. no prob for the info too.

Passing through, don't mind me.

Yeah, Roger still gets the job done quite well. And Pete is in fine voice, as well. The RAH performance is a real good one. I can do without the "special guests" that muck a few things up, but it's a good performance nonetheless. And John is very good on it.

Also, if you haven't picked up the Live In Boston DVD it's worth a go. It was recorded on the last show they did for the tour on which John died. They seem a little tired, and the performance takes a few songs to really kick in. But they get it going nicely. And Simon does a good job on guitar, as well as Pino on bass. And Pete plays with determined passion, maybe realizing with John gone he had to step it up a notch. Oh, and Roger sounds great, if a little worn. I figure it being the end of a tour that probably was emotionally and mentally draining took a bit out of the old geezers at the end, but they come through. Well worth a purchase at $20 or under. Which it is most places. Some nice bonus stuff, too. Including some of John's artwork.

Wow that Boston DVD sounds pretty good, I'll probally pick it up when I get The Kids Are Allright DVD. Yeah and I could never understand why they felt the need to have all the special guests. The Who can hold their own as a band by themselves. I wasn't too crazy about some of the guests themselves either, they did a good job for the most part, but I would have rather have heard the actual members.

One reason that I want to see The Who is I have this hope, whitch is based on nothing but a hope, that someday something will click with the Who and they will realize they could do an awsome cover of Kick Out The Jams, and put it in their set list. Though Keith and John's input on the song would make it MUCH better than what it could be today, I still think they could pull it off.

Lunch 03-27-2006 09:16 PM
I gotta check out dates when the Who are coming around Detroit. Although I'd be boarderlined on going. Half the original members are alive, and Rogers voice isn't what it used to be....

Nonetheless, it would be awesome to go.
As far as I know, they've scheduled dates up through mid-late July (mostly in England) but none for the US yet. I can't wait till they release the dates for the US tours though.

Roger isn't what he used to be, that's a given of older rock 'n roll singer. However, he definitely gets it done still. The Royal Albert Hall performance is great considering their age. I agree that the Special Guests take away from the performance, I'd rather have just the Who. But if they're trying to have a good time, they might as well go for it.

And yea, Heaven and Hell from LaL is stunning. Like, even more so than most other songs on that album. The middle section is just this incredible wall of sound, I can't even believe that three guys played that.

I go away for a year and this thread is still alive, wow.

zabbit82 03-28-2006 08:01 PM

As long as the Who rule, this thread will live.

I'll have to keep my eyes out for U.S. tour dates, ones around Detroit especialy.

Lunch 03-28-2006 08:12 PM

We won't let this thread die.

LONG LIVE ROCK

JohnXDoesn't 03-28-2006 08:44 PM

Yeah, this thread is here to stay...

Lunch, I thought maybe the thread should have a name. It deserves one. Yes I know it began as an F.A, but it's more an "Official" band thread now. I don't know if R&M does official threads, but I see many bands have titles for their threads. Threads Full Of Secrets for Pink Floyd and Hallowed Be Thy Name for Iron Maiden, for example. This thread deserves a title, IMO. THE WHO deserve it, I should say.

I figure you know people around here, Lunch. Hook it up. We can all submit title suggestions. You or a mod can have final decision. And perhaps the title can change every so often, too. Off the top of my head:

These Kids Are Alright: The Who.
Hope I Die Before I Get Old: The Who.
Under A Raging Moon: The Who
Maximum R&B: The Who

Etc, etc....I'm sure you get the picture.

JonG 03-28-2006 08:46 PM

Lunch & JXD's Holiday Camp.
JXD's & Lunch's Holiday Camp.

zomg
Fix'd :p

Lunch 03-28-2006 08:51 PM

I like the "Hope I Die..." one, mainly because that's a great and powerful song line that will last in rock music for ever.

Since it's an FA, I'm not sure if the changes will be allowed, just because they probably wont them organized. But if we can all agree on something, I'll give it a shot.

Edit: Treadstarter first, bitch.

robo2448 03-28-2006 08:52 PM

I'm happy as long as it's not a gay stupid pun name like most of the others. I like the first two JXD came up. Don't like the last two though because Under a Raging Moon is a pretty bad song and Maximum R&B isn't cool enough.

JohnXDoesn't 03-28-2006 08:55 PM

WTF? Who the hell is the TS? Lunch998? Obviously a lowly imposter. :smash:

Ephemeral 03-29-2006 01:30 AM

I'm going to throw out some Corny Suggestions for a new thread title if we need one:

- Teenage Wasteland
- Armenia City In The Sky
- Out In The Street
- Tommy's Holiday Camp

Or some other location from Who lyrics.

Dragon_Prince 03-29-2006 04:03 AM

I say we call it Teenage Wastelands :) Baba O' Riley has got to be the best song from the who

Or otherwise,
Join Together
the m(agi)x bus
MX Generation

or or or this

creepy crawly creepy creepy crawly crawly

^^

@Lunch, the FA link is still standing in that onethreat with all the other links and stuff. Anyone would notice this would be the FA whenr eading the first post ;)

Lunch 03-29-2006 05:48 AM

I don't like calling it Teenage Wasteland, mainly because that encourages the rumor that it's the name of the song.

And yea, I know where the FA links are, I'm just saying it's possible that the mods might want to keep all FA titles the same.

Dragon_Prince 03-29-2006 07:24 AM

Mhm, maybe a new The Who thread? :P

JohnXDoesn't 03-29-2006 08:33 AM

'sup Dragon Prince. Your thread names need work....:smash:

And I don't think we need a new thread if we can't rename this one. WTF, man? We ain't looking to dump all this good work. A new Who thread wouldn't make any sense and would die, most likely. This one is strong. I don't want another thread. :(

Lunch 03-29-2006 09:50 AM
Mhm, maybe a new The Who thread? :P
Why would we do that? That doesn't make any sense to start a new one when we already have good discussion here with so many posts.

If we can't change the name of this thread, I don't think we should start another one just to have a creative thread title.

JohnXDoesn't 03-29-2006 09:57 AM

I'm pretty sure he was kidding now that I see the little tongue sticking out at the end of his post. Wouldn't want another Who thread starting up, now would we? I'm scared of change. :(

EDIT: I'd crush it with my bare hands....

Lunch 03-29-2006 10:30 AM

Maybe not though, he tends to add smilies at the end of all his posts.

Ephemeral 03-29-2006 11:03 AM

I disagree with the new thread idea as well. Chances are, it would just cause confusion. Plus, like Lunch already said, this one has great discussions going anyways.

Dragon_Prince 03-29-2006 11:10 AM

Mwuahahahaa, and my avatar will always smile :P

zabbit82 03-29-2006 08:52 PM

Meh... lets just keep the thread name as it is and not start another thead. And Teenage Wasteland for a title? I irritated by people who call Baba O'Riley that invalid name.

You gotta admit tho, that phrase in the song is catchy as none other.

JohnXDoesn't 03-29-2006 09:33 PM
You gotta admit tho, that phrase in the song is catchy as none other.
It's very catchy. And of course it takes on meaning outside the song, as well.

I've recently rediscoverd Baba, kind of. It's like hearing it all over again for the first time. The synth into is just tremendous. What must people of thought they were hearing way back in '71? Some sort of crazy piano gone haywire, no doubt. Synths just weren't used in this manner back then. It was a big pain in the butt to do so, also, as they were extremely limited and unreliable and expensive. And it just runs throughout the entire song, too. Townshend was a real groundbreaker with his use of synths on Who's Next and Quadrophenia. Hell, it still sounds impressive today. And he wasn't just doodling with them or adding atmosphere as some who experimented with them back then, but composing entire songs around them. Quite impressive.

I want to mention that at http://www.petetownshend.co.uk/ they are looping a Lifehouse performance from 2002 on TowserTV. Just click the TowserTV button in the upper right hand corner of the web page and you're in. Same band Pete has been using for over 20 years live (the core of whom joined The Who for the 1989 "Tommy 20" tour that is featured on the new Tommy/Quad DVD, and also joined the band for the 1997 Quadrophenia tour also featured) and a chamber orchestra, as well. It's a fantastic show with several songs from Who's Next incuded, as well as Pure and Easy, Join Together, I Don't Even Know Myself, and Relay. And of course other lesser known songs from Lifehouse. It's shown in a loop, but it really doesn't matter where you catch it, it's good. And Baba is a show stopper. I can't even describe it. Simply joyful. It nearly brought tears to my eyes. Literally. It's pretty much Pete onstage with a group of people overjoyed to be perfroming these songs and music. Very good. I believe a DVD of the show is available. I'm going to see about picking it up.

They have also been showing a Japenese gig The Who played more recently. The Japenese really go nuts for them and the band seems genuinely charged by the crowd. It's a real good performance. So if you check into TowserTV once in awhile you never know what you might find. And it's always good.

JohnXDoesn't 03-29-2006 09:47 PM

If you live in London their is a Who Convention at Sheppards Bush Hall this Saturday. Simon Townshend will be performing at 5:00pm and a couple of Who tribute bands will also be on hand. Pete's girlfriend Rachel Fuller may also be on hand. Tickets are on sale, but in very short supply.

Yeah, I get angered when people call it that aswell.

But, I was just looking for 'locations' in Who songs.

<3 the Who.

Pete Townshend is on TowserTV LIVE, right now! With his girl and brother and a couple of others....

The Who have completed recording today of a new "Maxi Single" to be released for the upcoming tour. The record will include at least six songs and possibly as many as eight. Pete says Roger is in great voice and Pete's girlfriend Racheal Fuller says it is "great stuff". Pete seems very pleased with the results and says their is more new Who music to come. That is all.

You heard it here first.

EDIT: Pete says he wouldn't go to this weekends Who Convention in Sheppards Bush if they paid him in Jelly Belly's.

No way, dude. The final tour schedule was just posted yesterday at Pete's site and the completion of the Maxi Single was reported by yours truly as it was announced by Pete himself live last night on his girlfriends webcast show, which runs weekly on TowserTV. He looked tired. It was funny. She was like "what are we doing this weekend, Pete"? And he was like "NOTHING". And she said "well maybe we can go to The Who Convention". And he said "WTF for? Who's going to be there" And she said "well Simon and The Casbahs are going to be playing" And he said "oh well, I'm sick of them. I wouldn't go if they paid me in Jelly Bellys"

I'm on top of my Who reporting game. :smoke:

Yeah seriously, that album is just a monster. Probably tied with Dylan's Blood on the Tracks as my favorite album ever. The best live album ever without a doubt.
