OK...really newbie Dream Theater question coming right up, but I've got A Change Of Seasons, The Glass Prison, a live version of Beyond This Life, Voices, Caught In A Web and Erotomania on my computer, and I like all of them, and absolutely love the first two. Basically, which album would you guys recommend for me to buy, as I've been listening to them more and more recently. If this question's asked loads in here, then apologies.
Caught in a Web, Voices, and Erotomania are all on "Awake", plus the stellar songs The Mirror/Lie, Scarred, etc. Get "Awake" then "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence", and if you like those two, "Train of Thought" after that. :thumb: |

Whats this I hear about a new DT album? When is it coming out?
|
They just finished recording it...
I thought I read about a release in May... |
May or June. Anybody know a title yet?
|
word on the street is dream theatre closed a show by playin the entire album master of puppets. is true ?
Yeah its pretty cool. I have a video of them playing master of puppets |
this june's gonna be the best:
http://dreamtheater.net/news_dreamtheater.php#octavarium can't wait... my birthday's on june too :) |
oooh, I'nm so exited!!!
although the tracklist sames rather, un-DT like, as long as the music is awesome, can't wait |
Thanks very much man. :) I appreciate the recommendations. I wonder if they'll be playing festivals in the UK this summer, as European festivals are mentioned on their website, which they'll be playing this summer.
hopefully they'll play some headline shows later on in the year - it is a world tour. so let's just hope they don't ignore us :) |

I'll go see them for the North American Tour. If they come to St. Louis, I'll be there.
Edit: Definitely can't wait for the new album either. I looked and didn't see anything of the type, so I have to ask: Does anyone know yet what this album will sound like? |

I totally didnt gell with TOT. i thought the production of it was horrible...TOO LOUD ALL THE TIME. No dynamics. I think TOT was their attempt to get more of the traditional metal head into the audience. It worked too...when I went to see them on the TOT tour it was like OK all the really young 3 chord playing headbangers are here and it made for an annoying night. All the previous shows I went to the audience was full of musicians who stood and watched them play. I dont need to be pushed around by moshers or hit in the face with someones hair. I wont go see them if their next album is like TOT.

I agree with you about ToT, but part of the fun of going to a concert is to get into the music. The album was substandard but it had its good headbanging moments, and if you're near a "mosh pit" just move away. And don't diss the headbangers by assuming they can only play three chords. Good thing they're listening to bands as good as Dream Theater, so that they can learn to play something else, right? Come on, guy. Don't be such a purist. Dream Theater aren't exactly selling out on us (not like they could since LaBrie is still the singer). |

Awesome! And a tour over the summer!
|
I was going to buy a DT DVD today, but I can't decide which one....and also Is it worth buying...I caught their show In bulgaria a few years back ( by accident, I was visiting grandparents while they came) and I loved it. Some people tell me the DVDs are kinda bland and that they don't put on much of a show some say the opposite.
So which DVD do you suggest and is it even worth getting? |
Okay, this tour over the summer that's supposed to be a package, I've heard its very likely Megadeth will be on it. Sweet.

If you want great live shows, go with the Scenes from NY or Live at Budokan. I prefer Budokan because I liked the songs off of ToT they had on there, but Scenes was just as good. Its a win/win, IMO. Pick one up and you'll be happy regardless. |
I dont like the newer DT Material, like TOT, The Last good cd by DT was 6DOIT but that was only OK, SFAM was a bit gay.Concept Albums and DT go together like bread and paper, not at all. My all time fav is IAW, I havn't heard the first one WDADU, is it any good?
|
^^ WDADU is certainly worth buying, it was so ahead of it's time when released, it's a great album

Dream Theater has the most talented musicians in there, and they are very lucky, and I consider them a supergroup. They have the best Guitarist, the best Bassist the best drummer and an unbelievable keyboardest. But this leaves on guy out. LaBrie.I actually like LaBrie, but when I introduce DT to my friends, they're all put off by LaBrie.
He is a weak link in DT, but what would DT be without Him? Petrucci is unbelievable, but his songwrighting pisses me off lataly. The new stuff tried to be too different to the previous stuff. I admire their progressive abbilities, but they took it too far. This can be a problem for DT, 'cause I know people that lost a lot of intrest in DT after TOT. Im with them. The New album is gonna the same as TOT. Heavier. But thats not what DT was about in the beginning. They were about great riffs, Keyboarding, Melody changes and Vocalistic Genius. Not any more. |
I don't consider LaBrie the weakest link.
but his voice is an aquirred taste. he's a trained Opera singer. so his skill is extreme. I alwys have a very hard time, when it comes to, 'who's the weakest link in DT' they're all so amazing at what they do. arguably it is LaBrie, beacause he doesn't deliver much lyrics, and doesn't work on the music. but, meh this isn't going anywhere, I love them too much :p |
hmm.OK. but I leave you with this. DT in 1992-1999 or 2000-2005?
I think my choice is clear |
Images and words is my favorite, so my choice is clear as well.
but train of thought is my 2nd favorite but I'm just a weird guy. but they were more pioneers in the old days, now most things have already been done in some form or another, so it gets old fast |
yes, we need need a new band thats ahead of time....To make new ideas for us all to learn from
|

No, the new album ISN'T like TOT. MP, JLB and JR have stated this many times. And both SDOIT AND TOT have those great riffs, keyboarding, melody changes AND incredible vocals. Ever heard Endless Sacrifice? The Test That Stumped Them All? I'm really looking forward to the new album. It'll be interesting to see where they can go after three incredibly experimental albums. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, as long as it still sounds like DT. |
I have never heard this band, where I live people listen to sh!tty music, If I like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, etc. Would I like them?
|

Maybe, but not based on those bands. They're really nothing like them, influenced by them, but the music is really different. |
they play progressive (metal?), anyway they do the power chord deal, they have odd time sigs, wierd song structure, and amazing solos. you really just have to listen to them to get the idea.
|
Might like Train of Thought or Awake.
|
I actually went to a record store today and heard em'. some songs I liked alot and some weren't really my type. I was listening to a couple songs with really crazy melodic guitar solos, kickes a.ss thats what I like, so what album should I buy?
|
You know somthing I realized today was over the summer I say Yes on their recent tour, and there was this amazing opening act, and I just realized it was Dream Theather. I think I might want to get into them, whats a good cd to start on.

They all have crazy solos, but I'd suggest Train of Thought first for you. To the guy above me, start with Awake, its got some heavy stuff and some light stuff, so you can see what you like of theirs and go from there. :thumb: |

Images & Words will probably be the most replies you get considering you saw them supporting Yes. Then again I don't know what you saw them play, and I think Train of Thought was out then so I guess you were subjected to a wide range of their music. Try Images & Words though first, great album. 'Take! the! Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime!' EDIT: or Awake, tis true, it's a good mix. |

Thanks for the recomendations! I will definetly check into that
|
Hey guys, just a quick question about the next cd.
which song do you think is the 3rd song of the "the glass prison/this dying soul" story? I think it's "The Answer Lies Within " |
Dream Theater...good stuff. Can't wait for Octavarium, hope it doesn't disappoint like Train of Thought (not a bad album, but not up to standards). Also, am I the only one here who doesn't like Awake? Just wondering.
|
