do you have the latest slsk? because those older versions are blocked now
I've downloaded and re-downloaded it a few times, so I assume I'm getting the latest versions, and it never seems to work. |

I know, ignore my post. I did it because we were stuck, and I didn't see 033 suggest that we use Happymeal's links. I would delete my post, but I'm going to leave it, in case someone wants the songs |
I was talking to Senor Whippy, actually. He posted just above me, but he's deleted it now.

gotcha, I'll dibs if noone else does before too long
EDIT: whoops |
Air - Talisman
Theres something very "Hotel California" about the chord progressions in this. It could be keyboard as much as it could be guitar, I can't tell. It's slow and a bit airy, heh. Air draw a fine line between nice minimalistic atmospherics and boredom, and from my experience they can just as easily fall on either side. Here's a bass line that is quite audible. And there's definitely piano now, some string's have started as well. It sounds slightly trippy, maybe a little like Pink Floyd. A soft gallop of an electric drum beat starts, although in words it may seem fast.. well it is, but it fits with the slow moving music quite well. Ok, it's gone far enough to be 99% sure there no vocals in this one, it's relying on variation and some improvisation to keep it interesting and it's a job well done. All sorts of "moody" string bits come and go, bluesy/jazzy piano accidentals, etc. nothing really stays the same except the chord progression and drums. I must say the instruments volumes are balanced nicely as well, I can hear all of it. Air have done a good job with this song, not super good, but a solid good-good. I just hope no one dib'd while I wrote this out 8.8/10 (edit: that was a close call.. I just started writing it out in here without checking if anyone had done anything to further the thread since my last look in here) ___ ___ ______ Darren Hanlon - Falling Aeroplanes - acoustic.. folk? Bird Blobs - Bullworker
Opens with a sort of dark PiL/Gang of Four bassline for a few seconds and then funky drums come in. The guitars are kinda bouncing, gives off quite an eerie atmosphere. A second guitar comes in and it's lower and quite grainy. Ooh, dudes got some sinister vocals happening. This reminds me of an industrialised Cramps for some reason. I'm liking it quite a bit, but I like Bird Blobs so it's no surprise. The guitar interplay is effective and so is the bass, even though it's very repetitive. The little interlude/breakdown parts are good for seperation. He's whining (in a good way) now, still quite sinister vocals. This is quite danceable in a way, but also quite introverted and subdued. I like it alot. 9/10 dEUS -Nothing Really Ends (alt. rock/weird pop stuff) http://s46.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2FUK4XAK7QUNS3FAH34885O2KL Murder City Devils - Press Gang (organ laced punk/rock stuff) Stereolab - Hillbilly Motorbike (electronic psychadelic pop) Yes, I stole the dEUS link from Orb's thread.
Yes, I stole the dEUS link from Orb's thread. Sue me.
I only welcome more dEUS promo. Murder City Devils - Press Gang Starts with a cool slightly modulated organ melody, sounds almost like a zZz song. This is nice straight up angry hard rock. The vocalist doesn't really sing, he kinda has a Henry Rollins like vocal style. I find the guitar melodies nothing really special, it's basic chord patterns. The organ gives the song a very manic, hectic feel. The singers voice sometimes gets a bit drowned out in the guitars. The song as a whole works really well, it's just very basic -in-your-face stuff. I like the bridge, it's a bit more arranged. There is a brief, rock 'n roll like guitar lick that annouces the songs climax. This song is pretty good, although I'm not sure if it represents the sound of the Murder City Devils well. I don't find it particularly original, but it's a good raw edged rock song, which is a rare find these days. My rating for this is 7/10 My picks: The Delgados - Keep On Breathing Alternative/pop rock Thomas Dybdahl - Pale Green Eyes Acoustic folk/pop. TIP: listen to this through headphones! Shinobi edit!!! |
If this thread gets closed, it's been a good run. It's probably a good rule in the end.

The Forced Listening threads won't get closed, because they don't necessarily include using YSI, however difficult it is for some people to get the songs by other means.

Wouldn't suprise me if the forums go dead for awhile...

Orb, that's what I like about MCD, they don't mess around. It's simple, catchy, dirty and damm effective. |
Thomas Dybdahl - Pale Green Eyes
Slow intro, sounds very ambient. I like the glockenspiel (I think?), it's different. Reminds me of Eno or slower Kaada material so far. Wow his voice is quite unique, like a deeper, better Antony. Acoustic guitars, hollow drums, fun percussion. The female/male thing works quite well. The lyrics are slightly hard to pick up on, but they don't seem overly important. There's some weird effects in the background. The instruments are quite uplifting but the voices cme out in a very melancholy way. I like this, very easy on the ears and it's quite interesting. I'll definately venture further into this dudes stuff. 9/10. Wrens - Ex-Girl Collection
A very quiet first few seconds, I hear some organ playing and harmonics. Then the band comes in very soft, the vocalist whispering even softer and there's a lot of twinkly bits going on. The guy's voice creaks and the song picks up the pace, but not by much. Guitars are very jangly during the steady beat and at first listen it sounds like your average guitar-pop song. The twinkly background noise I just noticed is a bit distorted and a bit annoying at times, good thing it doesn't stand out. Around 2 minutes the song gets a bit louder(emphasis on "a bit") and it mellows down again, I'm guessing this is the bridge. On goes the guy again, whose words I can't really understand aside from "laaaaaaaah" or "leeeeeeeeh" in the chorus. The drums stop, and the innocent-sounding outro comes in.. and a sample of a guy singing/talking? Then another song overlaps it in the last 4 seconds. Weird song, well maybe just because I took it at face value. All the little intricacies are pretty distracting and I think are what makes this a good song. 7.5/10 Boris - "A Bao A Qu"(Pelican-ish stuff with vocals) Espers - "Riding"(folk with guitar solo) Dead Meadow - "Heaven"(neo-psych, the one from Feathers not Shivering King..) Ulver - "The Truth"(kind of dark trip-hop) |

Espers - "Riding"
Song opens with a couple of soft acoustic guitars combining for a pretty sweet intro instrumental part. Intimate male vocals come in soon after with some female vocals over the top just for acompaniment but not singing any lyrics, but just mimicing the melody. There is an electric guitar that comes in about 1:10 into the song and gives a so so solo with the acoustic guitar still present. The vocals are back, and they are pretty comforting. Now another electric guitar solo. Nothing too impressive here as far as the solo is concerned, but I am liking the song structure so far. Now another electric guitar with some distortion comes in and the solo takes a different direction. It is wierd having the soothing acoustic guitars juxtaposed with the buzzing distorted electrics, but it works rather nicely. This is nothing mind-blowing, but it is a good song. 6/10 Cat Power - "Speak For Me" |
Cat Power - Speak for me
Opens with a simple guitar riff, it is quite nice in its simplicty and gives a sense of something building. The female voice enters, it is quite nice, despite it not being particuarly strong it has good intonation. The drums and some backing vocals kick in for the chorus, I love the way the backing vocals sound. The drums give the backbone which it clealy needed. you can hear a Piano in the background which sounds quite good. There is now a lead guitar part which is once again simple, the words and structure from the first verse then comes back. My oppinion on the voice has changed throughout, I'm really liking it now. And I still love those backing vocals! The song ends rather abruptly after a second chorus and the repeated lead guitar section. Because of the short length of the song I feel it never really reaches the climax it desrves, however it is also nice that it is so simple. In general I think its is pretty cool song, I will definately look out for a band which I had heard nothing of prior to hearing this. try: Ben Harper - Forever genre = Acoustic singer songwriter or Danger Doom - Sofa King genre = Hip Hop |

Ben Harper - Forever (not the live version)
Soft slow acoustic chords in the start, very nice so far (first 10 seconds). Ben starts singing and a there's some hand percussion joining in, it's all so sparse and minimal, and this is perfect. Guess I'll have to listen to the lyrics, they're nice and clear.. and because the music has now been fully described. There's a definite sad vibe in the song, he's been let down too many times by love. Clever use of the word "forever," he never says the word "love" in this song, but the intended meaning is so clear. The chorus is a bit happier, he's still hopeful that he can find a love that will last forever. The words are done well, evasive and effective, I really like it. There's a break from singing in the middle this guitar playing reminds me a bit of RHCP. Another verse and chorus follow.. and it's over too soon.. but I guess it couldn't go on for... ever? Very nice stuff, despite it being sad. I'm glad it was so soft because I'm a bit tired now. It felt really right, as sparse as it was. Maybe another verse or chorus and a little bit of lead guitar would have topped it off. The live version must sound pretty good. 9/10 ________________________ Custard - Ladies And Gentlemen - "contemporary indie pop" Broken Social Scene - Cranley's Gonna Make It - feel-good instrumental indie Darren Hanlon - Falling Aeroplanes - acoustic folk Xavier Rudd - Little Chief - acoustic folk |

Custard - "Ladies and Gentlemen"
Starts off pretty subdued, not diggin' so much on this intro. Oh that's a cheesy little drum fill. Oohh I kinda like this bit at about 0:52 seconds or so... do I hear some violin in the background? Should be more prominent. Goes into a kinda of little happy basic guitar solo, but I like how it gets backed up with the sax near to the end. At about 2:22, that violin seems really out of place, but it sort of steps back a bit later. Still not diggin' those same sappy chord changes over and over... "Bah Bah Bum Bum Bum" and we're done. The singer was pretty boring throughout. No energy whatsoever. Some people can pull off that type of singin' but he can't. The song itself was half-decent I suppose, but from that song I'd have no desire to check into any of their other releases. 5/10 The Paper Chase - "Said the Spider To the Fly" (try epitonic.com) Weezer - "I Just Threw Out The Love Of My Dreams" |
