ac/dc whole lotta Rosie
I'm not a big fan, so sorry if it's a bit byased. starts off with very bluesy like guitar parts of a sec of 2, then some singing, guitar, singing, guitar, singing. at 0;30 it goes different and actually a nice beat. 1:10 whole lotta Rosie, sung in a really ac\dc like style imo. goes on with this nice sound, and all of the sudden stops at 2:00 hmz, not much more to review  hm opinion: I like the song actually, vocals aren't too annoying, I normaly hate his vocals. it sounds too much 80's garage rock if you ask me, or it's just the style of ac/dc. it's catchy and all, but just doesn't do the trick. and sorry for the short review, just can't tell much exciting about it. ow, score.. 7/10 would I check out more? I don't think so, maybe, when I'm in the mood. ====== songs: amon amarth: Versus the world (melodic death) my dying bride - for you (doom metal) Queens of the stone age - the mosquito song ( rock funkish) meshuggah - we'll never see the day ( technical death metal) |

My Dying Bride - For You
Starts off nice and strong, good riff, sounds like an keyboard underneath then 00:30, guitar plays on its own, then the same riff, with another playing over..nice and atmospheric, and keyboard playing strings underneath..nice. this continues with the vocals, they are slow, as if singing the lyrics is painful to the singer. 01:56 - break with strings, and a heavier riff still at same pace 02:19 - back into lone guitar and next verse, i like the music in the verses :thumb: still continuing, without vocals, until, 04:26, back into the intro riff..very effective and with double bass drumming back to lone guitar at 04:56, then back to the heavy riff ( 01:56 ) i get the feeling the songs dragging on a bit, basically repeating the same 3 parts, but its not that annoying back to intro riff at 05:35 lone guitar finishes the song quite a depressing song lol, but i like that from time to time  Overall i enjoyed this song quite a bit, but like i said, it dragged on a bit at the end, maybe a solo would have made it better, 7/10. Ill be checking out more of their stuff My songs are: Smashing Pumpkins - Everlasting Gaze..or The Everlasting gaze (alternative? ) Dream Evil - The Prophecy (power metal) Thin Lizzy - Emerald (Classic rock) Cathedral - Fountain of Innocence (Doom metal) Carcass - Death Certificate (Death metal..i think) Fear Factory - Replica (Nu metal) Immortal -Withstand the fall of time (Black metal) |
Dibs. Some nice choices there (Immortal and Carcass in particular).

cathedral - fountain of innocence.
starts off with the entire band playing, just from the beginning you're in the good doom sound. 0:50 vocals come in, but sound distorted. nice steady bassline, and some quite high pitched guitars in the background. 1:27 it gets heavier. I like this more. no more distortion on the vocals, that sounds better. 2:10 after a short bridge, a soft part, with the distorted vocals once more, but this sounds better. 2:45 heavy part again, which suits the music nice. 3:10, accoustic guitar the way it should be!, and great clean vocals 4:02 heavy electric guitars take over. and some rougher vocals. 4:20 a solo comes in. short though, and flows over into a bridge. 5:30 drums take a bit more lead. only very short though. 5:38 sounds like some soloing part , not a real solo, more like a jam session solo. but it sounds ok. at 6:08 a true solo emerges. and this solo carries on, till the end of the song, I like long solos :) opinion: Í'm into doom metal ,and always wanted to check this band out, but I can't find stuff on the internet. great doomy sound, and nice breakups, soft/hard/soft/solo, and so on. nice bridges, and of a nice lenghth, not just to connect two pieces of the songs, but it is part of the music, ( as it should be) I'm not to big a fan of the strange distorted vocals. the solo, especially in the end, is cool. score: 8,5/10 would I check out more? I'd love to, if I can find some more :p ==== songs: amon amarth: Versus the world (melodic death) A perfect circle - sleeping beauty ( prog art rock) <--just awesome Queens of the stone age - the mosquito song ( rock funkish) meshuggah - we'll never see the day ( technical death metal) American head charge - just so you know (not totaly nu-metal) <-- give it a try ;) |

APC-Sleeping Beauty
I hadn't heard this APC song in a while, so I chose it to refresh my memory. I like the format you guys have been using in the latest two reviews, so I'll do the review that way. 0:00 Starts off with a mediocre riff and interesting drums 0:24 Smooth singing verse 0:50 good pause for effect 0:52 slightly different riff with good ounding distortion 1:04 another verse 1:16 very mellow chorus 1:33 another smooth sounding verse 2:06 chorus-a little too mellow in my opinion 2:30 chorus with verse lyrics-This i really like 2:55 guitar solo??? 3:20 another solo, but not sure of instrument 3:43 a little more dramatic version of the chorus Overall this song is a very sleepy song with no real suspense and only a few intesting parts. I wasn't really in the mood for it, but I liked it. It's a bit too mellow compared to what I usually listen to, but it is a good song. Pros: Good lyrics. Good sounding guitar. OK guitar riffs. Decent drums. Cons: Waaaay too mellow throughout the whole song. Boring solos near the end. I give this song a 7 out of 10. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes more mellow rock. ____________________________________ Songs Alterbridge-One Day Remains(I love it.) Killswitch Engage - Take this oath
Killswitch Engage - Take this oath
I've heard this name being mentioned a lot, but I haven't actually heard them. Starts with distorted guitar, suprise surprise. Vocals come in, hardcore screaming. Some double bass drumming, not too bad. A new riff starts, this one is better than the opening riff, yeah I like this riff. Some clean vocals now, melodic riff. Not bad, not bad. I'm not really a very big fan of this metalcore vocals, but it's ok. There's a typical metalcore breakdown now, this is pretty nice, the riffs are all a bit similar though. Clean vocals over the breakdown, some build up to the intro riff and there we go again. The songs ends, I didn't really expect a solo and I was right. Would have been nice though. This wasn't a bad song, had some nice moments, but nothing special. I'd give it a 7/10. Recommended for Metalcore fans, probably. :) Some songs : Darkthrone - Where cold winds blow (Black Metal) Apocalyptica - Path (Cello Metal) Liquido - Narcotic (for Bartender maybe, just fun rock) At the Gates - Blinded by fear (Melodic Death classic) Cryptopsy - Cold Hate, Warm Blood (Brutal Death, without Lord worm) Soundgarden - Head down (A slow rock song) |

Darkthrone - Where Cold Winds Blow
I've heard of Darkthrone before, but never heard them before... :)
So here goes it: Darkthrone - Where Cold Winds Blow The song starts out with some very fast drumming, and almost immeadiately the vocalist starts his screaming. A nice, thick growl. The drummer is also very impressive, but it's hard to hear the guitars. Then the lead guitar busts out with a nice riff over the top of the singer. Maybe it's just me straining to hear them, but from now on they seem much more audible... The melody is awesome, a dark, speeding riff that matches the drumming nicely. After a while (this song goes for 7 minutes), the rhthym changes and slows down, with more of an emphasis on melody. The guitarist plays a fast, heavily distorted solo, which suited me just fine, and the song continues in it's slower state for a short time longer. All of the sudden, it's a quick progression, and then it goes back to the faster rhthym we heard at the beginning. Near the end, it slows down quite a bit, and consists of powerchords and cymbal crashing. The singer growls another line, and the song soon draws to a close. My thoughts on this song are varied. I liked the singer's voice, the distortion and the fast drum work, but I felt there wasn't enough melody there to keep me interested in what was coming up. The changes in tempo kept me listening, sure, but it was like I was waiting for the rhthym to change back again, instead of enjoying the music being played. Another thing that bugged me was the singer's habit of being slightly off-time, at least to my ear. I liked his screams, but he held on to them for too long. However, the song wasn't really that bad. It was quite good from a plain aggresive heavy metal point of view, and that's the most important thing. I'm giving it 7/10. And given the oppurtunity, I would like to listen to some other songs by them, just to see what they do in other songs. My picks: Haven't changed... I'm too lazy to write a new list. If you can't find them, I'll put some more in. Australian Crawl - Beautiful People or The Boys Light Up (New Wave Rock) Skyhooks - Smut ('70s Rock) Alex Lloyd - Black The Sun (Popular Rock) Silverchair - Steam Will Rise or Suicidal Dreams (Grunge) AC/DC - Razor's Edge or Big Balls (Hard Rock) Jet - Come Around Again (Rock) or Look What You've Done... Australian Crawl - Beautiful People
Being Australian, I've probably heard this somewhere down the line, but I can't really remember it. I don't know it by name, anyway. A familiar sounding riff, which has 70's written all over it comes in. It's pretty good. The vocals come in, they are a bit cheesy. Oh well. He has a pretty bad voice, a pre-requisite if you wish to be a successful rock band in Australia (come on, Bon Scott, this guy, the guy from Jet, Brian Johnson). The pop/rock bridge comes in at about 1:40, I'm waiting for a solo, but instead I get a higher up riff than before. Then it goes all quiet, so you can hear his terrible voice all so clearer. There's not much more I can write, it's difficult to review. So I'll end it here. 6/10. Typical Aussie feel good song. I wouldn't buy the album though. ----- Overkill - Blood and Iron (Thrash metal) Darkthrone - Kathaarian Life Code (Black metal - 10 mins long) Spiral Architect - Insect (VERY overly technical metal) Woods of Ypres - Shredding the Deadwood (Prog rock, similar to Opeth's Damnation) Download available at woodsofypres.ca Have fun. |

Woods Of Ypres - Shedding The Deadwood
Woods Of Ypres - Shedding The Deadwood
Well, can I say from the beginning... that this review will have me speaking glowingly of this song. So those who have distate for flowery prose can skip to my recommendations down the bottom. The song starts with a strummed intro, very reminiscent of '70s hippy rock, with copius pick squeaking, but has a slightly harder edge. The singer then comes in, a monotonous voice, yet full of inflection. It suits the song very well. A heavily distorted chorus links the verses, with the singer soaring above the guitar. The drummer is there, but isn't stealing the show. However, I don't care, as this isn't the sort of song that needs speeding drum rolls. A second vocalist speaks some lines that I can't decipher, and the second verse comes to an end. The distortion begins again... and stays for a while. The song doesn't bring up anything too new... but as before, I'm enjoying the singer and melody too much to be bothered. The "talker" says a few more lines, and the original strumming forms a pleasant bridge, before the chorus starts again. The singer really shines in this half of the song, drawing you in, and really letting you feel the emotion of the song. The song slows down and fades away suddenly, but not so fast as too ruin it. In conclusion... I really enjoyed that song... from beginning to end. I must check out the band, if they can produce other songs as good as this one. I give it 9.5/10. My Picks: Australian Crawl - The Boys Light Up (New Wave Rock) Skyhooks - Smut ('70s Rock) Alex Lloyd - Black The Sun (Popular Rock) Silverchair - Steam Will Rise or Suicidal Dreams (Grunge) AC/DC - Razor's Edge or Big Balls (Hard Rock) Jet - Come Around Again (Rock) or Look What You've Done... Shades of dust-Driven down
this song starts off with a cool guitar riff with a weird efect.good drumming. vocals remind me of atreyu, but heaver.guitar is like a very heavy nu-metal band.riff during verse is catchy.

Rammstein - Engel
Ok, so we all know Rammstein is German... so of course the song I downloaded was in german (I didn't want no crappy English dub version).
But, my next door neighbour, from Austria, was visiting my mother when I was playing it. So I asked her to give me the gist of what they were saying. Engel is German for Angel, and the chorus for this song is "God knows I don't want to be an angel", and the song revolves around how lonely an angel's life is... Bearing that in mind, here we go: Rammstein - Engel The song starts with a eerie whistle. After the first movement, a heavy bass line begins. The third movement signals the start of the guitars, all playing variations on the original song. The distortion is not too heavy, not too light. The singer begins, in a clear voice, singing about being good on Earth. Then a female vocalist sings about the plight of angels. The verse ends with the male vocalist singing the chorus I mentioned above, which is actually very catchy, and fits into the song really well. In the background you can hear all the techno elements that make up a good Rammstein song, as well as a pounding bass line. The guitar has a nice heavy riff they play though. The song starts into the second verse, then launches into another chorus. All is going well, and then they have an interlude. The interlude fits in, but they seem to be focusing more on the techno elements than the metal, and that doesn't sit well with me. When the interlude ends, we get a repeat of the first chorus, then a few powerchords later the song fades back to the eerie whistle heard at the start. In the end, I felt there was something lacking in the song. I wanted there to be more Metal, and maybe a solo, but instead got a crappy sample by the turntablist. Ahh well, the rest of the song was cool, and I really liked how the lyrics sounded in German. So I'm giving it 7.5/10. There ya go: Australian Crawl - The Boys Light Up (New Wave Rock) Skyhooks - Smut ('70s Rock) Alex Lloyd - Black The Sun (Popular Rock) Silverchair - Steam Will Rise or Suicidal Dreams (Grunge) AC/DC - Razor's Edge or Big Balls (Hard Rock) Jet - Come Around Again or Look What You've Done (Rock) ...
