Hey guys, got back from download yesterday, was pretty mint. Sup wi lod?

Sad But True 06-16-2009 04:59 AM

Download lineup was meh to me this year. Leeds lineup is mint though. Deftones, Brand new, Radiohead, Prodigy, Bloc Party, and for some reason Faith No More but not on the main stage :s

The_Mop 06-16-2009 05:54 AM

Epic post coming up...

The download lineup was a bit weird, most of it 90's numetal or 80's cheese... strangely I missed all the bands that I originally wanted to see (Meshuggah, Opeth, The Prodigy) but they were clashing with bands I either hadn't seen before or less recently.

The bands I ended up seeing:

Staind - put on a pretty good show

Dir En Grey - never listened to them before - had some cool tunes but the sound was terrible

Limp Bizkit - kinda funny, havn't listened to them for nearly a decade :P

Korn - pretty mint, totally not into numetal anymore but their session drummer was amazing, pretty much stole the show.

Faith No More - just awesome and piss funny on stage.

Devil Driver - boring. Never listened to them before, I think I'll continue that way.

Static-X - havn't listened to these guys for ages, which now seems like a really stupid mistake as they kicked ***

Pendulum - kinda boring. Realised just how samey they are. Barely any stage presence.

Marylin Mansion - had to run off from my spot near the front to help a mate out, ended up just sitting around for this one. Was boring and the crowd quite obviously didn't appreciate it. Almost got booed off during the encore.

Slipknot - again, not listened to these guys properly for ages but they were ace. Put on a fantastic performance, the sound was excellent as well.

Dream Theater - Average performance, I've seen them do better before. And what the fuck was up with playing hollow years at a metal fest?

ZZ Top - Just pure amazingness. Really want to see them again.

Whitesnake - chilled out on the hill for this one. Found it really boring tbh.

Def Leppard - Didn't intend to see these, was cheesy but they were bloody tight. Good way to end the fest.

The last night in camping was crazy. Hung around with these mint aussie guys, all sorts of shit was getting set on fire and damaged and stuff. Awesome \m/

Blue_Moon 06-16-2009 06:19 AM

few of my friends went over again had a great time

i did not go :)

jaklyons 06-16-2009 08:25 AM

A couple of mates of mine were backstage at Download, at least during DT and ZZ Top's sets.

ZZ Top's drumkit looked awesome. Actually, ZZ Top look awesome in general.

oary77 06-16-2009 02:40 PM

I'm pretty sure thats not how you supposed to pick up an infant..I got in trouble for it..

benfan 06-16-2009 02:45 PM

Hey MoP glad you enjoyed download, i just got back myself.
Stand out bands -

Meshugga
Slipknot
Steel Panther
Journey
Trivium

The_Mop 06-16-2009 05:44 PM

Tbh, suprisingly Korn and Static X really stood out for me, I havn't listened to Static X in ages and they just kicked arse. The Korn session drummer (can't remember his name) was absolutely incredible, completely off the hook.

Would have seen Meshuggah but Faith No More were on. Never seen faith no more before and I've seen meshuggah twice, so faith no more got that one. Don't regret it either, FNM were fucking awesome (in contrast, the meshuggah gigs I've been to have been suprisingly dull).

lmao static x

EPIPHONE GUITARS AND MARSHALL MGS

The_Mop 06-16-2009 06:08 PM

Yer, I've always thought that was a little wtf but they still sounded pretty ace live. Aren't they pretty huge in the US? They're not really that big in the UK.

With Meshugga it was kinda like they just played their set and that was it, there wasnt much atmosphere. But they were super tight.
I know there isnt much love for them on these boards but Trivium killed it on sunday night, and i was suprised by how many on the download boards enjoyed their set.

Sad But True 06-17-2009 06:44 AM

To be honest I'd really want to watch Slipknot, they didn't play Leeds last year like they were supposed to because Joey broke his ankle, and it ruined the day. I really like the last 2 albums.

mnemonic 06-17-2009 07:15 AM

so how many people want to see that world war z movie

Wayne Static has his own ESP sig model these days. Dunno if he actually uses it, but whatever.

Either way, I've never listened to Static X. I heard a bit of a Static X song a few years ago, I thought it was bloody awful.

The Transporter 06-17-2009 08:19 AM

static x is not a band that i find myself enjoying listening to. i'm sure some people may like them, but the riffs sound like things i come up with only to throw away.

Detuned0 06-17-2009 02:41 PM

Very suprised to see many familiar faces still here lol.

Yeah, it did look awesome, shame about the sound though, it was triggered and the samples were shit :P

In other news - Sup detuned

mnemonic 06-17-2009 03:01 PM

sup lod

i wonder what death vocals sound like through hxc autotune like what hiphop singers do.

The_Mop 06-17-2009 03:14 PM

probably wouldn't make much difference. The hip hop thingy (otherwise called the Cher effect) is just making the retune speed between pitches as fast as possible. As death metal vocals pretty much stay in one pitch most of the time, I doubt it'd make much change.

More interesting would be stripping the modulation and pitch drift... this is a pretty cool effect, used on that new bloody britney spears song. It's pretty cool cuz the formant and pitch retune are kept the same and it sounds pretty natural but still kinda robotic.
