I'd pretty much say lengthy songs, a heavy use of synthisizers, grand concept albums and long instrumental pasages all constitute Prog. Still though, theres just something that has to be there for a band, album, or song to really be prog. I can't describe it really.
Yea I would have to agree with you.

It's funny everytime I come in here you al are talking about someone other then the floyd...are we comparing?

What's up with people and links lately? I figure I missed something

DeusExMachina 12-17-2005 01:07 PM

Apparently some dude was linking to cookie stealers, and then breaking into peoples accounts. Don't know too much about it though.

I'd say Obi One Kenodi's definition is mostly pretty good, but there are always exceptions. I don't think it's possible to pinpoint any truly defining characteristics.

moaner 12-17-2005 02:38 PM
a heavy use of synthisizers
I'd say that in the 70s, synthesisers were a new, exciting instrument, little used by the mainstream, and that's why 70s prog bands used them so heavily. It wasn't the instrument itself, it was the way that they were new and exciting.

I agree completely. Once again, I think that part of what makes prog progressive is that there are no defining characteristics.

Well, for a song to truly be progressive, I think it has to progress, or develop, through diffrent sections or movments that are all tied in with a common musical theme.

Mr. M, Man of Muzak 12-17-2005 09:03 PM

Age of Silence is a great example of modern prog music. Their album Acceleraton defines originality.

randomthought9 12-17-2005 09:45 PM

I'm no expert, but wouldn't some characteristics be: no intro/verse chorus structure, long songs, different time signatures, maybe key changes, concept albums, etc.

I disagree. I think it's progressive in reference to being musically progressive, not structurally so. By placing criteria on what the song should do, you're confining in by certain rules that prevent it from potentially branching out in another way.

Those are common characteristics. But those can exist in non-progressive songs and albums (I assume), and also aren't absolutely necessary. I really think that saying "progressive music must have factor X" is limiting its ability to be truly progressive.

I only have Complications: Trilogy of Intricacy by Age of Silence, but I really dig it.

Doctor Night 12-18-2005 02:48 PM
Med's featured genre explains prog very well. Read it for a detailed description of it and some definitive prog bands to check out.

Edit- Here's the link for it- http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=406837

Since everyone's so paranoid about links these days you can just get the link from the Rules and Links thread if you don't trust me.
Thanks man. That helped a lot.

I can't wait for Gilmours new album.. I may go see him live if I get the chance, he IS my favorite guitarist.. And he can put on one hell of a show.

Dragon_Prince 12-20-2005 03:06 PM

Mhm 2 concerts of him sold out before I knew he was playing here :(

guitarded_chuck 12-20-2005 03:19 PM

Really? I assume the North American shows aren't sold out because I think the tour was just announced recently. I'll probably go to Toronto to see him live.

Broken Arrow 12-20-2005 06:30 PM

blue3 12-20-2005 07:40 PM

Riva 12-21-2005 02:53 AM

So, did anyone see the English show TopGear when they test drove Nick's very own Ferrari Enzo? It was a great show.

Aaron_Of_Oz 12-21-2005 03:14 AM

LF96 12-21-2005 08:12 AM

Damn, he's not coming to Belgium. I'll have to travel to Paris or Amsterdam to see him. And I'm very probably not gonna do that.

DeusExMachina 12-21-2005 02:31 PM

Danm. I don't think I'll be able to see him. Sad face.

Maybe I can go visit Chicago, and see him then...

LoL...I wonder if I can convince my dad to drive me too?...all the way from Texas....

robo2448 12-21-2005 04:20 PM

He's coming to NY:D

Presale tickets aren't avaliable anymore on ticketmaster, but once all the tickets go on sale I hope I can buy some.

Doctor Night 12-22-2005 01:23 PM

I hope he does a tour of England. I'd love to see him.

Danger Bird 12-22-2005 06:47 PM

Aside from the album, one of the main reasons he's going on tour is to dispel rumours of a floyd reunion.

Today I was contemplating how many orgasms I would have if Floyd re-united with Syd.

Are you kidding? *has a orgasm* OMG Syd's back in the Floyd Syds back in the floyd

^ Okay that's the dumbest thing I've ever said.

So I was playing on a fender twin reverb today...and It sounded incredibly like
Davids playing...

standard 12-23-2005 02:03 AM

He used a Twin for almost everything in the studio.

I wanna get one of them.

moaner 12-23-2005 05:26 AM

Dave's UK dates sold out VERY quickly.

Can't believe he'd sell his soul and tour north america while only doing a few UK dates.

heavy.
