I can't wait for them to announce tour dates. I saw them a couple years ago, by far the best show I've ever seen. I'd love to hear some new material. As much as I love their old stuff, I think it would be very interesting to see how they present their new stuff live. Obviously, live performance has always been a huge part of the Who's fame (and rightfully so), so some new stuff would kind of show how they've matured in my opinion.
I think the band has also matured musically, ability-wise. Take a look at Pete's guitar lines from the 70's compared to his recent live shows (Live 8, etc.). Not only has he added to his style, but I think his technical ability has improved as well. As for Roger, I think he's one of the few vocalists who has aged very well. His voice still sounds great, and while it doesn't have quite as much of the "badass" quality as it did in his prime, he still manages to hit most of the notes well and make them sound great. As soon as they release dates, I'll be there. No way I'm missing them after what I saw on the last tour. |
I would also like to hear new stuff, And I wouldn't mind if they put much of the 60's stuff away, either. They sound a bit disinterested when performing those songs at times. My Generation, ok. But I Can't Explain. Anyway Anyhow, Anywhere, Substitute, The Kids Are Alright, etc? I can do without hearing those one more time. Pete is planning some stuff with their long time manager and he says the tour will not only revolve around some new material, but other stuff, too. He says it was Bill's idea. He says he would like to have thirty songs ready to go for a new album, but that isn't realistic. He also says he doesn't give a fuc.k if people tell him the new songs sound like "Broadway show tunes" or if they won't suit radio. He's in it for himself and the fans and fuc.k all else. Gotta love Pete...

I agree with the live thing all the way. I saw the Who last they played the Hollywood Bowl, and although explosive, they are not quite as compelling musically as they used to be.
I also recently picked up the Live in Boston DVD, which was recorded near the end of 2002. With a small stage, dark clothing (perhaps in memory of John) and spare lighting, the entire visual effect was one of starkness. It's not so bad that Townshend doesn't leap around much anymore (he still windmills) or Roger is more relaxed and stationary. They still put there hearts into it. But on older songs (such as Substitute and I Can't Explain) John is sorely missed. And of course all Who songs are "older". But I'm sure you know what I mean. The thunder that was once there for those songs is missing. As well as on Baba 'O Riley and other songs where John's bass used to lead the way. And of course doing My Wife, The Real Me, and Trick Of The Light, among others, is out of the question. So with Pete in his early sixties and Roger nearing 65, I think they can use a bit of help about now. I say if they are going in for another round they should make the most they can out of it. Bring the lights, bring the lasers, bring the onstage digital video screens, rear projection, the whole thing. And turn up the new bass players amp a bit. But if not, I'll be there anyway. Wouldn't miss it for the world. |
Pino will be playing bass so there's go change for good bass... (amazing bass player but clearly shouldn't be on stage with them)
Playing John's songs is excatly what they should do. Would actaully bring some variation to their **** boring setlist and they are far too good songs to just collect dust. Since Simon is playing with them ,he could easily sing John's tunes like 'Trick Of The Light/Succes story/Whiskey Man/When I was a Boy/Quiet One'. However if anyone here has downloaded the video from alt.music.who where Pete is just alone playing acoustic guitar and singing 'God speaks of Marty Robbins' (played Dec 2005 during WhoTV Special) song. It's quite clear that kind of show would much better and more interesting than any "Who" show. |
^^Since John's death things have gotten more pedictable with them onstage. The set list seems to go something like this: "Oldies up top for the first four or five songs (maybe throw in Who Are You as an opener to get things off to a big start), Another Tricky Day and early seventies stuff, a Quad trio (always the same three songs these days) a couple more oldies, Won't Get Fooled Again, and then an encore of Tommy tunes. And the songs never change. Nor the order in which they are played for the most part.
Ok, nothing wrong with that, most bands do that, as a matter of fact. But as much as I love the Who it must be said, these are old guys playing old songs. And sometimes they sound like it. So when they come next I would like to see a change in the setlist and in it's structure to freshen things up. I don't care if they do the same songs night after night. Let's just get some brand new stuff in there as well as different Who songs then they have been playing since John died. They have a vast catalogue and I would like them to choose different songs to play from it. Even some of Pete's solo stuff would be welcome. And the band would sound great playing it. And a bit of presentation would help, too. I don't think they should play John's songs, though. Simply because he's not here to do them and they don't really need to.... |

Actually, if they didn't play those I'd be very dissapointed (exceptent Anyway... I really don't like that, although the chorus is a helluva catchy one.) Honestly, this being my first time I'll see The Who, I wouldn't mind a setlist similar to the one you're talking about farther down on the page. On this topic, what would everyones "dream The Who set" be? Heres mine: I Can't Explain My Generation Bargain The Real Me Dreaming From the Waist Substitute I'm Free The Seeker 5'15 Summertime Blues The Kids Are Alright Baba O'Riley Emminence Front Join Together Love Reign O're Me Encore: Behind Blue Eyes Who Are You Long Live Rock Won't Get Fooled Again We're No Gonna Take It Something along those lines, although that ones far from perfect. |
^^Now you see, if they could throw several of those into the mix, we might be in business. Fun idea to do this, too. I'll post mine later, as I'm busy right now.
EDIT: I'm tired of them doing the "We're Not Gonna Take It" thing at the end of shows... |
I'd be happy if they played Amazing Journey/Sparks in the fashion of the Live at Leeds version. That's always been one of my favorite live Who cuts.

Alright, here's mine: Baba 'O Riley (performed like they used to do it with John before they added keyboards. Just a really loud bass intro and then Pete smashing down on the guitar. The keyboards can come with the guitar, too. This would be after the first verse. And with great lighting and stage effects. Great opener). I Can See For Miles Substitute Long Live Rock The Seeker Another Tricky Day Who Are You A brand new song... Let My Love Open The Door (Pete solo tune. Played by the band, but sung by Pete) Bargin Sea And Sand A brand new song... Eminence Front Rough Boys (Pete solo tune, sung by Roger) Pinball Wizard Sparks My Generation Twist and Shout (super old school Who) :) ENCORE: A really good new song... Naked Eye Won't Get Fooled Again And that's pretty much what I would like to hear at a Who gig. Now if they would just do it! :smash: |
I would love to hear the Who do a cover of Kick Out the Jams. Out of any band I think the Who could cover it best. It would be great if John and Keith were around to do it, their contributions the the song would have been incrediable.
|
My dream set list is basically impossible for me to think about. I'd like the concert to be like 3 days long.
But to give it go just for the hell of it: Heaven and Hell Baba O'Riley Young Man Blues Substitute Tatoo Armenia, City in the Sky Bargain Rael Overture>It's a Boy Amazing Journey>Sparks Acid Queen Go to the Mirror Boy We're Not Gonna Take It Shakin' All Over You Dreaming From the Waist Eminence Front The Seeker Naked Eye The Real Me 5:15 Love Reign O'er Me A Quick One Won't Get Fooled Again Encore: My Generation (including instrument smashing). Edit: If I saw them perform this I would probably die afterword, knowing there was nothing left to live for. |
Today I got The Who live at the Royal Albert Hall 2000 and it is great. It was the last time they preformed with John I think. His bass solo in 515 is one of his finest moments I would recommend this cd to any Who fan. There are also extra lyrics to The Kids are Allright that I like a lot they are:
When i wrote this song I was nothing but a kid Trying to put a right or wrong To all the things I did I was kind of pracitcing with my life I was taking chances in a marraige with my wife I took some stuff and drank some booze There was almost nothing I didn't try to use And some how I'm alive I don't know how I'm allright I shouldn't be but you know I'm allright And I look at my kids and there all right What can ever be wrong with kids Nothing wrong with my kids Nothing wrong with your kids So unlucky or lucky well the kids there ok now So stay lucky be lucky make sure you stay that way Because the kids are allright I thought they were cool because well most of the Who's songs are about the youth at that time, and now it's updated so those of the Who's generation can still identify with the song, even though they arn't young anymore. |
Encore: My Generation (including instrument smashing).
Don't forget exploding bass drums. Anybody have an idea of when the tour dates will be released? I've done a little hunting, but not much. |
Mhm hard one
I can't explain Heaven And Hell Substitute 5:15 The Punk And The Godfather The Magic Bus Happy Jack Bargain Who Are You Pinball Wizard Helpless Dancer You Better You Bet Face To Face(Pete solo song it's great) The Real Me Pinball Wizard My Generation Getting In Tune Behind Blue Eyes Love Reign O'er Me Encore Baba O' Riley Won't Get Fooled Again We're Not Gonna Take it and offcourse some new songs in it |
Lunch, I am disappointed in your setlist. Please try again. :p
"three days long", lol... |

yeah that royal albert hall dvd is great.
john, offtopic but would you mind sending me some x? |
Do not make me resort to the book again. Just because I'm not a whore for Pete's solo career.
Yeah well, at least I'm not a slut for a deaf, dumb, and blind kid with a messiah complex. :smash:
john, offtopic but would you mind sending me some x?
No problem. How would we do this? I've never sent files over messenger before or used yousendit. So you can clue me in. I have the first four classic albums (the fourth of which is about four songs shy of complete) and also See How We Are. Which is a good album, but is post Billy Zoom. So it's different. Someone once described X as a punk band that is kind of rootsy. See How We Are was described by that same person as a roots album that's kind of punky. That sums it up pretty well. |

Same thing about you being a slut for a crazy guy with a mod complex. /goes back to reading book. |

if you want to go by yousendit, you right click the album's folder and click add to zip file. if you don't have winzip or winrar you can download it. once it's zipped, go to www.yousendit.com and browse for that zip or rar file. or just contact me next time you see me on aim. i can wait. thanks man. |
Wow, I just saw a video of the orginal Smothers Brothers performance were The Who firsted smashed instruments at the end of My Generation (when Pete lost his hearing in one of his ears.) The look on John's face while Pete and Keith are going crazy and breaking everything is priceless. YouTube is a great site.

I like to watch John anyway, cause he always looks so uninterested in what's going on. He's like, "Yea, I'm awesome. No big deal."
And his stage costumes are cool. Like the skeleton one. |
That was out of control. I think I do see fear and dismay for a second or two. And then they just continue smashing every last thing. It really is kind if strange to watch. On 30 Years Of Maximum R&B Live they show it in slow motion. The force of the blast actually blows Towmshends hair around. Messes it up good. It's stupendous. Moon was an idiot!
|
I thought when that drum blew up that was one of the best moments in stage antics history.

The bass drum explosion is classic.
Entwislte's stage presence might seem boring, unless you watch his hands. Then it's amazing to watch him. |
Hey guys. I just changed my music service to Rhapsody and it's much better then Musicmatch, which I had been using before. And it beats Napster by a mile. So if any of you use a music service, check it out.
Anyway, they have just about the entire Who catalogue, and Face Dances and It's Hard have interesting bonus tracks. It's Hard has live tracks that are pretty rockin' and Face Dances has a live version of How Can You You Do It Alone that kicks arse all over the studio version. It's not even the same song! Literally not the same song. Great. It tears stuff up, for sure. Also a live version of The Quiet One with John going nuts on bass and vocals. Plus other good things. I think I rather like Face Dances. It's just Did You Steal My Money and How Can You Do It Alone are weak songs and sort of lag there in the middle of the album. Other then that it's pretty good. So yeah, if you don't have Face Dances or It's Hard with the bonus material they are worth checking out or picking up. Especially Face Dances, which has three previously unreleased studio cuts (including Somebody Saved Me, which eventually turned up on a Townshend album) and two live cuts. And yes Lunch, I found a "Best Of Townshend" album. Of sorts. So there. :p |
The bass drum explosion is classic.
It reminds me of Blackmore's amp explosion in Tokyo with Deep Purple. |
John: What exactly is Rhapsody? Does it download music, or do you just play muisc on it
Riva: Deep Purple kicks ass too. |
^ It downloads music, too. It's a service not unlike Napster or MusicMatch. You can stream music into your home and choose from over 1.5 million songs to add to your library. It imports all the music on your computer into it's own player so you can store it alongside whatever you choose from Rhapsody, and as an option you can actually store the music on your hard drive so you can listen to it offline but not actually purchase it. How that works if you quit your subscription, I don't know? And I haven't too much space left on my HD, so I'm not gonna find out.
So yeah, it's a subscription music service. They also have video. I was just surprised by the vast selection of albums available. And the program works well. For $5 more you can put the music on a portable device and take it where ever you want. But I don't do that, so its $10.00 a month. I suppose it's like renting music. Which is fine with me. It's month by month, so I can quit anytime. And they give you two weeks free upfront to check it out. I wouldn't buy music from there, though. If I come across something I want to buy I go to allofmp3.com and pick it up for around eight cents a song. That's just fine. |
