The JoZ 02-15-2005 12:07 AM

Oh yeah, if you really like ToT, the best album to get after that IMO is Awake

BradyEB 02-15-2005 02:09 AM
I would love to cover The Glass Prison in my band, but it would be a bitch to learn :(
Man the middle section would rule so much if you did \m/
A guitarist in my Power/thrash with Death and Heavy metal influence wants to play Pull Me under. Im not really into the idea much thou.

Burdcheese 02-15-2005 09:45 AM

Got/watched the Budokan DVD today.

That was amazing.
It really shows how ridiculously talented those guys are - and also really personable in the backstage extras.

I wish I was the kid who got to go up and drum with Mike :(

Yeah, naturally, that's the section I can't play.

I can't play the triplets in the breakdown, and I can't play the solo section. I can play 9/10's of everything else though, on bass.

Meh.

IvortheEngineDriver 02-15-2005 12:48 PM

I want my band to play "As I am"...what's amusing is that my lead singer sounds like Eddie Vedder, so, I don't know how it would work. I can play it...kinda, up to the real fast part, its something I am eventually gonna get, but I really dont want to tune my B string to C to play it...so, I might just play it low.

Though, Glass Prison would be amazing...god, that song owns me! I hope you can do it Joz!

The JoZ 02-15-2005 01:06 PM

I tune my B string up to a C all the time, it's really no big deal, even on bass.

I'm not sure if The Glass Prison will ever happen though, because I don't know if anyone can learn the solo section...and even if we did, we don't have a keyboardist, and more than likely never will...these guys are more into melodic metal / metalcore than prog, so...

I still plan to try and keep learning at least the bass to TGP though

The keyboard breaks just after the unison solos have some of the craziest DT bass playing that ever made it into the mix. Good luck with that.

Are you referring to the little interlude between John and John where Rudess and Portnoy drop out for like a few bars before going into that heavy pre-outro?

No, I'm talking about the little keyboard breaks after the solos that go Petrucci-Rudess-Petrucci-Rudess -Petrucci/Rudess. The countermelodies Myung is playing against Rudess in those sections are incredible.

The part right in around the 11 minute area?
If so, that is some nice bass work in there.

IvortheEngineDriver 02-17-2005 06:34 PM

I have a question:

Are they all pissed at Myung? They did Liquid Tension w/o him. They rejected his songs because they weren't fully structured right for them. Is there dissention amongst the ranks? is he going to leave a la Kevin Moore?

I'm not a 100% sure about all this, maybe someone could clarify

I don't think anyone is pissed at him. I just think that Myung is more poetic than the other members, and sometimes it can get hard to incorporate this into a band when your not the leader.

But no one knows, he doesn't talk really often!

They never did LTE purposely without him.

LTE was originally Portnoy's side project from DT. He couldn't find a guitarist that he wanted to work with and his wife suggested that he use Petrucci because the two of them work so well together. When LTE formed, Rudess was still working with the Dixie Dreggs if I'm not mistaken. After working with Rudess, when Sherinian was out of the band, Jordan was an obvious choice.

It just became a stroke of luck that 3 members of DT happened to be in LTE.

After one of the more recent albums they had a rule set down that if you were to submit lyrics, they had to have a natural flow to them so that they did not have to spend time working with them to try and make some sense of of them for a song. Myung had written generally abstract and non flowing poetry for them to use as lyrics and Petrucci and Portnoy had to sit down and work a song out of it. They still accept all lyrics that come their way, Myung has just never submitted any since.

That's true. Just take a look at "lifting shadows off a dream"

Deth 02-18-2005 11:44 AM

I've just gotten my first DT album (Awake) and it's pretty awesome. Any suggestions for next one? Note: my favorite song off it is Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
(sorry to break the flow of the thread)

shawnson 02-18-2005 11:59 AM

Images and words :thumb:

too bad Myung has withdrawn completely from submitting lyrics (or poetry)
I really like his work, example: learning to live.

and I thought Moore had some awesome lyrics as well, I wish he would contibute some lyrics once more. just lyrics no playing.
it's just that I really enjoy his writing style.
but I don't really like OSI, I wish I did :upset:

Deth 02-18-2005 12:18 PM

MAthiAS 02-20-2005 01:35 PM

bball_1523 02-20-2005 01:48 PM

how is Jordan Rudesses' solo album? Like what type of music does it resemble?
