well its good to see someone who knows some **** on this board! kudos to you ....

yes the new bloodbath is great stuff ....... one thing though about dan swano...he is a prick in real life....... very arrogant son of a bitch ....... which is why he set out to do the entire crimson II all alone..and it was such a bad job..... dan swano great musician ..but an asshole personality.....

got a little off topic from opeth ...sorry
Dan is far from a prick in real life. I am a pretty regular memeber at the Dan Swano official forum where he posts regularly. he is actually a really nice guy. There was a lot of BS going on which is what caused him to quit EOS in the first place. They released one EOS album without dan, so he released one EOS album without the rest of the band. It is now even. But seriously, he is a super nice guy.

And also i think that dan swanö is pretty relevant to an opeth discussion. he did produce their first bunch of albums, and has been in a few bands with Mikael, and is friends with the entire band. He may not be a member of opeth, but i think it would be safe to say that he helped get them started.

Opeth.........good

PDD 10-16-2004 04:23 PM

What CD would you recommend buying to start off?

NJMetalMeister 10-16-2004 04:25 PM

Deliverance is probably the easiest opeth cd to start from, to get a clear view of what they sound like. ****ation is by far the easiest listen, but does not represent them well.

I would reccomend Blackwater Park to start with.

shortass 10-16-2004 05:10 PM

I've only just started listening to opeth but I like what i've herd

bucket 10-16-2004 08:10 PM

To the In Flames- Opeth sounding alike thing

Umm, No.

There is ONE part where it really does remind me of In Flames in ITMSWS. It has a killer growl by Mike. Shoot, I'll try to find the exact words he says or the time it happens. But dag, it's good.
I had to post this. A lot of my old fav bands have sold out and most of the crap I listened to 5-10 years ago just flat out suck now. I bought a CD last year entitled Orchid by Opeth. Lemme tell you...It opened my mind to Music. I listened to Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera etc when I was younger, I am talking the early 90's. There are a select few good bands that have been out there forever and havn't sold out. Slayer, Iron Maiden etc. But Opeth...I don't think It's possible. if you havn't heard of them or heard them I suggest Buying ALL of their CD's. The most Intricate band In my opinion. Songs average around 13 minutes...And you just want MORE!!! The first song I heard by Opeth was In Mist She Was Standing. I had goosebumps....Just when I thought There were no good bands out there Opeth rescued me.

Opeth has no Genre. They are Opeth :thumb:

well its great to hear ..and read that he interacts with his fans.... thats wonderful and im not takin that away from you..or other fans.... ... but swano is a big headed guy .... very sure of him self cocky persona .....crimson part 1 is an awesome cd ..... and that was with THE WHOLE BAND CONTRIBUTIN! ..swano was pissed off when that cd came out ...cause he wanted it every min to be swanos little way ....and the band memebers were gettin pissed with it ........after the band moved on and got a new vocalist .. (which i never bothered with.... and dont care to either) ...swano was left with alot of anger . he even mentioned himself in an interview ...that he has been wantin the chance for a while now to put out an edge of sanity album all by himself...... ..hey i mean fine if you can play all instruments ...great..and still have ideas for a new crimsonII then more power to you....but put it under YOUR OWN NAME SWANO! like what he did with moontower.....but swano is not an idiot ....hes an asshole ...but not an idiot ... he admitted its all about the dollar signs...and if he put out the same crimson II under swano ..then that would sell very little units .......compared to havin the edge of sanity logo eteched at the top...
it was all about the money... said it himself. ...and he wanted to make the previous members of edge of sanity jealous...now if you ask me..thats such a wrong reason to make a record... and it shows ..cause crimonII is a bad cd .... can you honestly tell me its really good? or at least measures up to CRIMSON I ... doubtful .....

yes i think he is an amazin musician ..he can sing beautifully ...and growl ...and play just about every instrument..... but still doesnt take away from the fact how someone is as a person............. ......many people in the metal industry have said what an *** swano is ..... just a very bitter person to deal with ..... and thats pretty sad

NJMetalMeister 10-17-2004 04:36 PM

First of all i'd like to see the proof where he said he made crimson II just to make the rest of EoS jealous. Second of all, yes i do think crimson II not only measures up to crimson 1, but is actually BETTER. The song flows better. Crimson 1 is great, but it has a lot of stops and pauses in between parts, which makes it almost sound like a lot of songs thrown together in order to become one long song.

I know he wasnt happy about them continuing EoS without him, but i would need to see proof of him saying that he made crimson II just out of spite, and NOT because he wanted to make it.

xizoesira 10-17-2004 04:37 PM

My personal choice for showcasing Opeth to the uninitiated is Still Life. Has everything.

Wow.

I mean, I got my Blackwater Park CD at Sam Goodys, but that doesn't compare.

bucket 10-18-2004 09:17 PM

The Sam Goody near me has had every Opeth CD besides MAYH and Still Life.

Today in theory we were learning about texture. Would Opeth be polyphonic?

/thinks that is the right term

xizoesira 10-18-2004 09:20 PM

I saw MAYH at Borders. It was almost $18. :/

omgwtfboogie 10-18-2004 09:21 PM
I saw MAYH at Borders. It was almost $18. :/
It's worth more than that.

bucket 10-18-2004 09:28 PM

I do not understand how MAYH is a favorite of some people. Bleh.

There are some good parts, but it doesn't seem to click like other Opeth albums.

And what the hell! Demon of the Fall? It's not a very good song!

I've listened to that CD many times, but still I don't like it very much.

omgwtfboogie 10-18-2004 09:30 PM

MAYH isn't my favorite, I was just saying it's worth more than the $18 or whatever it was. Surely you agree with that?

xizoesira 10-18-2004 09:30 PM

Demon of the Fall is my favorite off MAYH, actually. :P

I never see anyone else who thinks Still Life is the best.

LeperAffinity 10-18-2004 09:31 PM

Still Life has actually surpassed BWP to become my favorite recently. White Cluster and Godhead's Lament have some badass riffs.

I don't actually :)

Meh, Maybe I need to give it more time.

Epilogue is the best part of that CD and I must say, it is an awesome song.

ex_vert 10-19-2004 12:47 AM

i decided to buy an opeth cd at random cos i had heard some good stuff bout them. i was looking 4 deliverance but got ****ation(how ironic) but i waqs really disappointed. i no its their slower albulm or whatever but... is deliverance a reliable enough albulm to judge opeth by?

Cardboard Headgear 10-19-2004 01:12 AM

Not quite, it's an absolutely excellent album by all means, but it doesn't seem to quite capture everything that Opeth are about. Just something about it, I can't quite put my finger on it. Don't get me wrong, I love the album, it's just probably better to start with another instead.

dUSK 10-19-2004 02:25 AM

ok. this is another what-cd-should-I-start-with post, sorry. I've downloaded a number of songs by Opeth, and I have a few favourites, all of which seem to come from different albums. Here they are in order.

1. To Bid You Farewell - Morningrise
2. In My Time of Need - ****ation
3. Bleak - Blackwater Park
4. The Moor - Still Life
5. Harvest - Blackwater Park

I will probably get Morningrise first, as it has my favourite Opeth song on there, and seems to be fairly well liked from the pages I have read here. The only thing I am worried about is that it only has 5 songs, which won't give me a very broad view of their music. Otherwise I will get Blackwater Park. What do you's think? Some advice would be nice.
