Blues Traveler- Optimistic Thought

song specs:
length:
album: Travelers and Thieves
genre: Jam Rock

play by play:
okay we'll start by saying that i don't like happy music/music with happy tunes... so this song is not for me... shoulda known better: its called optimistic thought... okay so this one'll be cut short a bit... starts off with some crazy harmonica in front of a quiet rhythm guitar... at 0:17 some overly happy singer comes in for a verse... at 0:48 we do the harmonica thing again... then more verse... really not too much variety in the music... at 1:34 we have... more harmonica! and at 1:48 we get a harmonica solo, kinda interesting, then followed by a guitar solo... guitar sounded cool but then we have more verse that negates any coolness that the solo might've had... at 3:10 we get some 'doo-doo-doo' as our verse (same tune), then the song ends

reactions:
vocals: 2/10- not as bad as today's pop stars, but very happy and annoying. the tune was repetitive and dull.
guitars: 3/10- nearly non-existent in the song; the same tune the entire time- the same annoying tune. the solo was the only saving grace.
drums: 3/10- they weren't too terribly audible, and what i heard didn't make the song any cooler
bass: 2/10- inaudible, no presence in the song whatsoever, didn't really add anything
harmonica: 1/10- just plain annoying!
overall: 2.5/10

final thoughts:
sorry, bartender, but this is one of your songs that i did not like. i wouldn't recommend this song to anyone and it's definitely a song that's gonna be deleted as soon as i finish this review.

recommended songs:
Opeth: Blackwater Park (death metal)
Tenacious D: Wonderboy (if you haven't heard the D, do so, NOW!)
Tool: 4 degrees (metal)
The Doors: Riders on the Storm (classic rock)
Trapt: Still Frame (check out some nu-metal!)

Opeth - Blackwater Park

I borrowed this off a friend a couple of weeks back, but I haven't had a chance to listen to any of it yet. So yeah. I'm a big fan of Opeth, so I will most probably like this.

*puts the song on*

It starts with some chords, and a Opeth-ish riff, and Opeth-ish drums (if there's one thing I can't stand about Opeth, it's the drumming) and this goes on for a while. It's getting a tad boring now. At 1:13, it changes riff, and it is a lot better than the opening one. The two guitars kind of do a call and response thing, it sounds excellent. After that, there's this acoustic riff, which are always great when they come from Opeth. It doesn't go for to long, unfortunately, only about 3 bars. Then the growls come in, I like Akerfeldt growls, they suit the music very well. After the 'verse' it heads into the prog side of Opeth - the classical interludes. This one is quite intrisic, usually they are pretty simple, but this one is pretty complex. There's an organ, or something, in the background, play various chords, and changing dynamics. After a while, it moves to a acoustic, then back to the clean electric, that was the original tone of the classical interlude. The random organ starts playing again now. This is really tranquil, I really like this one. It changes to an acoustic now, with electric gutiar chords over the top. It finishes with a cool effect on the crash cymbal. Another thing I liked about that interlude is the length: it went for the about the same time as I thought it should. Another 'verse' now, it's been going for a while, and isn't ever halfway through. Some double kicks on the drums, heavy riff, great stuff. It continues changing back and forth between riffs for a bit, then back to the vocals, over a new riff this time - this one is very stop-start. After the vocals, there is some cool palm muting, then a solo! An Opeth solo is quite rare, and this one is pretty good. Nothing awesome, but it's cool. It goes to another riff (that's about 10) and the bass does a sort of slapping technique - it's really quite high in the mix. I hope he isn't doing the Korn technique (i.e. hitting the strings) because that sucks. The drumming changes, into double feel, and gives the song a real drive at that point. Back to an acoustic riff briefly, then an awesome scream from Akerfeldt. The song is coming to a close, it sounds like (yep, there's only 90 seconds left) the drums back off a tad, giving a really good groove, but the double kicks remain. Then some awesome bit, this cool riff over all these crazy chords. There's like 3 different things going on at once. Then it all stops, and goes to a classical guitar, the chords are splendid in this little bit. The classical fades out, and the song comes to a conclusion.

8/10... some awesome bits, brought down by some crappy bits. I should listen to the rest of the album... Black Rose Immortal!

Dire Straits - Why Worry.

starts off with a hawaii sounding guitar part, and some synth effects ( I think)
some weird percussion as well, very relaxing so far.
at 1:15 vocals come in, very soothing.
starts to sound repetitive at about 3:00 (and the song lasts for 8:21)
5:00 still the same structure, some guitar, with synth effects, and than a clean synth part
at 5:30 the song starts to change. ( a bit)
more guitar.
at 6:10 drumming comes in, an an clearly audible bass line.
a slow guitar part, simple, yet nice.
before the song ends.

opinion:

-I like the vocals, very soothing.
-good song structure.
- nice use of effects.
- lyrics aren't bad either.
- good 'sleeping' music (maybe for tonight:) )
- I like long songs, so this is a good one, although it tends to get a bit repetitive)

over al:

8/10

suggestions:

Katatonia - Tonight's Music. (doom metal)
Porcupine tree - blackest eyes. (prog rock-ish)
Dream Theater - hollow years. (prog metal)
meshuggah - perpetual black second (technical death metal)

guitar intro with strange background.... mediocre heavy guitar comes in. gets repetitive fast. a horrible voice comes in and assaults my ears with some of the worst lyrics ever. "its so erotic when your makeup runs...." very crappy. some good backing vocals, and the acoustic guitars not that bad. but **** that guy has a horrible emo voice. some more distorted electric, still repetitive. then an organ? and wierd sounds. more horrible singing better lyrics though "ive got a scar where all my urges bled" some guitar and drums, then the end.

4/10 decent, some good music but horrible horrible singing

Wow, you have made Blues Traveler the most underrated band in the world. Though I would have given this some thought if you didn't spell "Dude" with two 0's.

I take it that was Porcupine Tree? You might want to let people know in the future.

yeah, that was Blackest Eyes, I did that one in Other music.. didnt like it much either, just for different reasons

actually i think it's kind of interesting that we get two different perceptions of the band... perhaps we should move Bartender's Crash and Burn review up farther... btw i did give them a second chance with Crash and Burn and though i'm not writing a review for it, i'd give that one about a 6-7/10

Casey Jones - The Grateful Dead (Mellow Rock?)

As I listen to this song I find the guitarist a refreshing change from scale solos, power chords, and heavy distortion. This guy likes to mute and all the instruments flow together smoothly.

More than the guitar, though, I think about the lyrics. If I let myself sink back into the time The Grateful Dead emerged I can almost relate this song to the turmoil in the nation in the 60s and 70s. It sounds like this song was addressed to someone in authority about recklessly taking the nation on a crash course with another. Then again, he could just be singing about a conductor "drivin' that train / high on cocaine."

Overall rating: 7/10
The vocalist has impressive control over his voice and the writing is great. I especially like the mood of the instruments (whose parts are also well written). In the spirit of such I'll be recommending another song for fellow non-Deadheads.
=========================================================
The Grateful Dead - Fire on the Mountain (Mellow Rock? my personal favorite)
Led Zeppelin - Dyer Maker (I would list a genre but I think it would spoil the surprise. this could be refreshing for those who don't get the led out save for the grand staircase)
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Crossroads (Blues Rock. It's SRV, 'nuff said.)
Stone Temple Pilots - All In the Suit That You Wear (Alternative Rock. one of few songs I like of theirs)

stone temple pilots - all in the suit that you wear.

the reason why i picked this song, is 'cause I saw Velvet Revolver live last week, and their singer is the former singer from STP.

a intro that could be from a prog band,
at 0;06 vocals come in, remind me of chris cornell.
slow guitar part,
guitars sound a bit distorted, sounds like 1 big sound effect, seperate instruments aren't all that easy to hear.
0:40 the chorus starts, which sounds nice.
1:23 couplet
2;00 chorus again.
at 2:35 you think the song ends, but i carries on, a drum fill, and the chorus starts again.
all of the sudden the song ends.

opinion:

- I like the vocals
- nice feel good song
-shouldn't last any longer than it does, would get boring otherwise
( i Ilke long songs)
- instruments blend in too well at some parts.

would I listen to more of this band?
propably :)

Meshuggah - Perpetual Black Second

I am quite the fan of Meshuggah, but I haven't heard any of Nothing. That is soon to change. It starts very Meshuggahy, the odd time signatures and pounding drums have Meshuggah written all over it. Goes to a riff now, it is almost in 4/4, which is weird, I always expect a weird time signature from Meshuggah, and it's quite weird when you don't get one. Verse now, I love the drummers crash cymbal, it's got this really unique sound to it which I enjoy a lot. The only thing I don't really like is the vocals though, it's a mix of hardcore and death, sort of, and it doesn't really suit my style. Oh well. After the verse, there's a cool little ditty, heavy, and odd time. I love it. Verse again, then a chorus, where the drums really become prominent. It's cool. After that, a bridge thing, and then the Meshuggah solo: picture a Slayer solo, then put it down an octave. That's what it sounds like. It's all pretty samey from there on... I need to check this album out. The 8 strings sound excellent.

8.5/10.

I'm sorry for the short review... I'm very tired.

Extreme Unction - Necrophagist

Ahh... I love broadband. By the way, Necrophagist means someone who eats carrion. Interesting? I think so...

Anyways, I haven't heard much technical death and the grind part made me wince. But with an open mind I bravely opened winamp and played the song.

The song starts out with a quirky, very fast (I'm talking two secs here) intro, and then the rhthym kicks in. Heavy distorted rhthym. I like it. I can see the technical part coming in as the guitarist does some rapid moving up and down the fret board, making some really cool soaring notes which rise out of the sea of distortion below. The drummer seems to be simply keeping the beat, though I catch hints of him doing more. Suddenly, the rhthym changes slightly, become more dark and sombre. The singer comes a short time after. He seems to be your average run-of-the-mill growler, but he is doing a good job of matching the song's feel.

The rhthym changes back to the original, heavy, death metalesque chords, and the singer shuts up. More soaring notes and suddenly a solo springs into place. This solo is nice, but nothing special. It does well to complement the song's mood, and has a nice effect at the end as it blends into the rhthym seemlessly. The guy starts singing again, "EXTREME UNCTION!!" and the drummer comes into his own with some nice drum work. The "rise and fall" style of guitar continues, and the song ends with a quick drum solo, and then a complete stop.

Score: 7/10. I really started to dislike the singer after a while, and I love Arghoslent and In Flames, so I don't mind growling. However, the song overall was quite a good package, with some really nice guitar. My only peeve other than the singer was the drummer did little more than keep the beat for much of it, but other than that I enjoyed the song. I might just check out some more Necrophagist.

Anyways, my picks are:

In Flames - Dead Eternity (melodic death)

Wicker Man - Iron Maiden (awesome classic heavy metal)

Hard As Iron - Judas Priest (awesome classic heavy metal)

I Don't Believe In Love - Queensryche (progressive/power metal)

manuscriptreplica 08-24-2004 06:50 AM

^^ For that album, one guy did the whole lot. He played the guitars, and programmed the bass and drums. That is why the drums aren't overly pretentious in the album.

LordDargon 08-24-2004 07:01 AM

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm Necrophagists vocals are great. Extremely thick growl. Juicy, ya know what I mean. And yeah. It was a one-man-band at the time.

the stranger 08-24-2004 07:41 AM

I'll dibs, and hope this time I'm able to download the songs

the stranger 08-24-2004 08:26 AM

queensryche - I don't believe in love.

always wanted to check them out, never did, and now here's my chance.

starts off with just guitar for the fisrt ten seconds.
after ten seconds drums and bass enter.
I like the sound of the bass, it quite up front.
0:19 vocals come in, don't sound to bad, they are not the typical power metal vocals ( which I don't like, iced earth for example)
but it seems high vocals don't bother me that much in prog,I actuallt like LaBrie's (dream theater) voice.

but on with the song.
bass fills in enough so that the guitars can play very hollow and empty sounds, but still makes the song sound whole
at 1:00 bass is building towards a climax.
at 1:09 chorus starts.
at 1:28 bass sounds like they ajusted it to high treble, sounds very...mechanic.
2:00 chorus starts again.
2:36 guitar solo, not to difficult, but sounds ok.
at 4:12 just guitars, untill song stops.

opinion:

-nice vocals, I do like them a lot.
- it's prog alright but easier to get in to than dream theater.
- great bassline (reminds me of porcupine tree)
- not too fond of the drumming though.

7/10

would I listen to more of this band?
I'd love to, so any suggestions?

songs:

Katatonia - Tonight's Music. (doom metal)
Opeth - silhouhette (piano solo) (prog death metal for the other songs)
Dream Theater - hollow years. (prog metal)
Symphony X - in the dragon's den (prog metal)
porcupine tree - wedding nails [great instrumental] (prog rock-ish)
