I guess it depends on how "splashy" you want the splash to be. The bigger they are the louder and slightly more crash like they will be. If you liked the trashy sound of the Wuhan Zildjian makes trash splashes as well.

Excellent I'll try to poke around a little bit. Thanks for the response.

Aaron 09-17-2009 12:43 AM

Best non-kevlar head for a 10"x14" kit snare? I want sensitivity, but something to control the ring. I've tried all the CS style heads, and am now considering a thin head + moongel combo. Any other ideas?

Seafroggys 09-17-2009 01:41 AM

a thin head may not stand up to thicker sticks, if that's what you'll be using.

FL3P 09-17-2009 05:28 AM

Did you try an Emperor?

Aaron 09-17-2009 06:01 AM

I use 8AWs when I can find them, if not 7AN Manhattans.

I've been avoiding Emperors, but I think it may be a possibility down the track. I'd love a Fyberskin II with a CS Dot under it, but that'd be too much to ask, lol. I hate the feel of two-plies.

Slayter507 09-24-2009 06:50 PM

Hey I'm a jazz drummer, looking for a new ride cymbal. I want a 22-24 incher, with really good stick articulation and a mellow ping (not too high pitched and cutting, but not too low pitched and dull either). Anybody have any suggestions?

Seafroggys 09-24-2009 07:10 PM

Can't go wrong with Ziljdian K's. Might want to look into the K Heavy Ride. Dark with lots of ping.

Aaron 09-24-2009 07:20 PM

I use the 22" K Heavy for jazz but for low-volume you need something smaller to pair with it. I've got it paired with a 20" K Crash-Ride. If you're into livelier jazz, or fusion, it's perfect.

I'd suggest looking into the 24" K Light Ride, it's a bit more expensive, but the extra size drops the pitch and allows you to control wash a lot more.

Alternately there's the Meinl Byzance Extra Dry Rides. They're lovely. I highly suggest them, but make sure you try them in person as I've come across a few with a bit of harshness in the wash.

after some advice

I have a pair of XS20 medium hats and the top hat has about a 7mm crack in it, I have cut out cracks from cymbals before I am just wondering from anyone with experience how much it will effect the sound/play.

Seafroggys 10-10-2009 02:01 PM

Have any of you tried the Remo Vintage A head? I bought it because the shop was out of regular coated Ambassadors. Apparently its 2 ply, one 7.5 mil, the other 3 mil (this was how the original ambassadors were made apparently). I just put mine on today for a gig. It sounds great. Just wondering if anybody else has any experience.

My hats broke on me about a year ago (under warranty, thankfully!) and they sounded alright most of the time even so. Trashier and quicker decay. I didn't play with them much once it was cracked though because I wanted it replaced.

Aaron 11-15-2009 01:17 AM

Alright. I can't decide on the final cymbal for my setup. The choices are:
18" K Custom MT Dark Crash
18" K Medium Dark Crash
18" K Crash-Ride

To pair with:
13" K Hats
16" K Custom Special Dry Crash
20" K Crash-Ride
22" K Heavy Ride
17 & 19" K Chinas

I've got splashes, and other cymbals I use in stacks, but yeah. What you think?

fishbulb 11-15-2009 02:04 AM

You already have a crash ride so why get another unless you really think you'd use it differently than the one you've already got. Just outta curiosity: You're not willing to venture out of the Zildjian K line?

Aaron 11-15-2009 06:23 AM

I like Ks, they all sit well together. I've got some non-K splashes I use, but any non-Ks I've owned I generally sell after a while as they don't fit with my set. I thought having the smaller version of the K Crash-Ride would be good for pairing, but I know what you mean. I've tried a heap and it's come down to those three.

ant_182 11-15-2009 09:52 AM

id go for the k medium dark crash I think that it'd add something different to your sound, but still match the other cymbals if you get me?

fishbulb 11-15-2009 01:22 PM

What type of music do you play again, Aaron?

Aaron 11-15-2009 03:38 PM

Well my recorded output is ambient/IDM stuff, but I play in a hardcore band and a 9-piece fusion group. Also setting up a trio for weddings/50ths gigs.

Cymbal wise I need something that responds at different volumes, and isn't too bright when you lay into it. I play a lot of rute/brushes.

SgtBaker 11-15-2009 05:33 PM

so im in the market for a new ride. i have a K custom hybrid which is great, it is just really bright. im looking for something better for jazz as thats where my playing has been heading lately. im open to anything really, but ive been looking at bosphours turks which are real nice.

Aaron 11-15-2009 05:35 PM

Ping or wash? Dry or wet? etc?

SgtBaker 11-15-2009 05:37 PM

limited wash, not too pingy, dry, and dark

Aaron 11-15-2009 05:45 PM

21/22" Byzance Extra Dry.

SgtBaker 11-15-2009 06:22 PM

like you mentioned earlier, the one at my store is real washy because it is so thin. thanks for helpin out though

Aaron 11-15-2009 06:39 PM

No worries dude.

SgtBaker 11-16-2009 08:21 PM

this is sort of like the one they had at the store i wanted but now its gone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHdmS6mo-qs

i sent bosphorus an email asking them if they sold their shi right out of the location in Kennesaw which is the main US location, right outside of atlanta where i live. yup

Aaron 11-17-2009 06:54 PM

I got to borrow a 22" Ufip Natural Ride once [a bit under medium weight] that I think would suit your needs; look for something like that. Maybe even with a rivet installed [three holes drilled, one used].

pearl_srx 12-28-2009 12:57 AM

any knowledge on sabian sr2's? i like the idea of inexpensive cast cymbals but is it a gamble?

Aaron 12-28-2009 08:32 PM

There was a thread on them here a while ago if you search around. I think they're basically cymbals that never got the final tick on going from production to shipping out as HHX/HH/AA/XS20 etc. mycymbal.com [or whatever the correct URL is] has soundfiles of them, so I'd say they'd be safe to purchase on them.

Head question: best combo of heads for toms and bass [batter and reso] to go on bubinga shells. Toms are short-stack sizes, bass is 22x20. Thinking Emp/Amb for toms and PS4/PS3-stock for the bass. Thoughts?

Aaron 01-05-2010 09:42 PM

*ahem*

hairydinosaurs 01-14-2010 04:31 PM

hey, im looking to get a new ride cymbal, but im not sure what to get. At the moment all my cymbal are Zildjian A Custom, and i would prefer to stay with zildjian but im not sure i like the sound of the ride. Also, i want to change my Hi Hats to Zildjian's new Z3 range.
I play mainly heavy metal...any help would be appreciated.

price: anywhere from £0 - £250 ($0 - $400 approx.)

Aaron 01-14-2010 04:56 PM

If you want ping, for for a K Heavy. If you want wash go for a Sweet Ride.

hairydinosaurs 01-14-2010 05:35 PM

any particular size?

Aaron 01-14-2010 07:06 PM

I've got the 22" K Heavy and can attest to it's sublime awesomeness, but I think the 22" has been discontinued and only a 20" is available new. The A Sweet Ride only comes in 21".

ctccromer 02-19-2010 04:37 PM

Heads: What's the difference between different tom drum heads? I know kick and snare heads have special stuff, but whats the difference between, say, an Evans G2 coated batter head and an Aquarian Texture coated batter head?

Cymbals: I've read that basically if you hear a nice (ex.) Paiste Alpha China and love the sound, then go buy the same cymbal, size, etc, that it won't be the same? Is this true? I really like the two crashes Jimmy Sullivan (The Rev//Avenged Sevenfold) uses, and the china Alex Rodriguez (Saosin) used in their first album. I'm going to buy a new drum set and new heads before i get new cymbals, but why not learn about them now, eh?

fishbulb 02-19-2010 05:49 PM

Heads: For starters there are single ply and 2-ply heads and these come in clear and coated flavors. Each combination has its own set of characteristics. Consult the tuning bible for the differences.

Cymbals: There are two things going on with cymbals. 1) What you hear on records is vastly different than what you hear in person. The cymbals are picked up differently by the microphones, which sound different in different rooms, and is further altered the effects added during mixdown (among other things). 2) Each specific cymbal has its own characteristics as well. Although you may buy the same brand, weight, series, size as someone else, it will sound different. The room, again, plays into this a lot.

ctccromer 02-19-2010 08:37 PM

i knew about 1 vs 2 ply, and coated vs clear, i just dont know the differing EFFECTS (i shall check that site. It's in my favorite's list)

Well crap =/ So then if i like a sound on an album i'm out of luck?

dcha 02-19-2010 09:17 PM

Is K custom a good line for jazz? Any other suggestions? I like the sound of the 20" Dry Ride K Custom. As for a crash, what could you guys suggest for something very jazz-oriented, but sounds great with pop/rock beat.

Aaron 02-19-2010 11:07 PM

They're great. I don't like the Dry Ride though, it's pretty one sided compared to the Pre-Aged or the Special Dry Rides. If you want to have a one ride setup I'd go for any of these:

20" Pre-Aged
21" Special Dry
21" Left-Side
20" Constinople Medium High-Bell

Got a ZXT 20" medium... And it's pretty cool ! The sound is very clear and it's nice to play metal or jazz... Or jazz metal ! :)
The bell have a nice clear and powerful sound too. But it's probably not as cool as Z A custom.

I have planed to buy a ZXT hi-hat, but it seems to be not very precise.

ctccromer 02-25-2010 05:55 PM

I play modern rock, a little fusion jazz, and some metal. I'm tryin to find people to start a band (I'm anti-social, and don't know many people..), and will try to play screamo music.... minus the screaming. I love the music in so many bands, but the screaming RUINS it, imo. Ex. All That Remains, Trivium, early Avenged Sevenfold

But anyways, what would be good cymbals for this? I have my own picks for Sabian and Paiste based on the online recordings (not quite old enough to hop in the car and run to guitar center and play around with cymbals, and parents wont take me), but I want to see what's suggested, especially since just about everyone here has more experience than i do
