awesome. i really like the shape.
i'd really like to get into playing bass. i want a 6 strng bass. i've got a list of stuff before that tho |
Update time.
Have decided to just post and people can comment if they want, no more bunching up the pictures at begining, will use those reserved posts for finished product and other relevent things. Anyway picture time, they are not very impressive as I had to start the whole neck core from scratch as mentioned earlier. It looks like the new neck core might shape up to be a 9 piece one, no worries though, 9 is my lucky number. The new neck core in clamps, only 5 laminate pieces at this point A close up of the new neck core, this time it is glued to my specs And for interest sake, here is the thicknesser/planner I use. It got used rather a lot today as you can see. |
that dog looks like he's gonna take a bite outa you
|
i like how the grain of the wood kinda goes like this <<<<

Looking good, Hobbes. Where do you find upright strings and what is the scale of your EUB?
|
Looking good, Hobbes. Where do you find upright strings and what is the scale of your EUB?
Well strictly speaking its not a true EUB, more a normal fretless in upright format like the Dean Pace Bass. The scale is going to be 35 to give a little more tension on the strings couple with the fact that I am only going to string it up with D'Addario Chromes. As for upright strings, one of the music stores stocks them, but I have no need unless I buy an acoustic upright.........someday :thumb: |
Right, update time.

If your wondering what the outermost laminate wood is I will give a bit more deatil shortly. |
Proper update and some input needed on your guys side.
I needed to track down some more wenge for what has now turned out to be a 9 piece laminate neck. But unfortunately I was unable to find any decent stock at my normal supplier. So What to do. Fortunately they did have stock of some very nice afromosia. A wood that is used a teak substitute sometimes. It is also quite bright tonally and similar to maple. Have a look at the Warmoth.com Guitar Neck Woods section to get an idea of its sonic properties. So anyway I picked up a what looks to be two decent pieces of Afromosia. Lets say that once they had been planed slightly and I could see the gain more clearly I was very impressed. So much so that I have a problem on my hands. I now am no longer certain that I want to use the beautifully figured piece of Wenge I have for a fingerboard. The afromosia is suitable for fingerboards just in case you were wondering, and this bass is only going to be strung up with flats. So now I need some help in coming to a decision. I have 3 possible pieces of wood for my fingerboard but do not know which to use. On to the pictures to help you guys decide. From Top to Bottom: Afromosia, Bubinga and Wenge Close up picture, from left to right: Wenge, Bubinga and Afromosia A macro photo with the new neck core to allow you to see the woods A close up photo of the above And I did say I would tell you what the outermost laminate was. If you have not guessed by this stage it is indeed Afromosia. So which do you guys think would make the best fingerboard? Keep in mind that the wings are Bubinga with a figured wenge laminate top, you can check the photos to see what I mean. |
I think I would go with the Afromosia just to get some variety. i was first thinking the Wenge would look best. but then, i remembered the Wenge laminate top.
By the way, I really admire your carpentry skills, and I'm real excited to see how this turns out for you. |
Bubingia with a tung oil finish.

I am also very partial to the afromosia, not just for the grain and colour but because it will hopefully add some brightness to the tone according to Warmoth.com, considering the wenge and bubinga are know for their more low mid presence. |

Right, the count now is this: 2 Votes Bubinga 2 Votes Afromosia (Not counting mine) 1 Vote Wenge. I have a sneaky feeling that unless there really is opposition to the afromosia it is going to be the winner. Or unless it looks crap with a danish oil finish. |
I'm gonna have to do with the Afromosia too, Hobbes. It's different and still looks nice.

All work on the project is on hold until further notice.
I will not go into details but I no longer have access to any of the tools. |
awwwwww laaameee, regardless of situation i cant wait to see the final product
|
Well good news.
The build will continue this weekend. Also in the process of buying a car, so that will also take place this weekend so I cannot promise much work will take place. |
Update time:
Well I now have access to the tools again and did a little work this weekend, and I do mean a litte, reason for that is that I have been buying a car this week and have been busy with insurance and all the other stuff that goes along with it. Picked it up yesterday and I am very happy with it, I would post a photo in here but is currently raining outside and I don't feel like getting wet, so maybe I will post a photo of it later this week. Right, onto the pictures. Please note that all I honestly did on the bass the weekend way thickness and plane the new central neck core. Many photos of it though to make up for the lack of real progress ;-) The new neck core all glued, thicknesser planned and out of clamps for your viewing pleasure Al close up (Yes I know one of the wenge laminates look wider than the other, it is not however the case on the other side, bit of an odd one that) Another close up (I am very happy with how this neck core has turned out) Neck core with the wings along side it |
And finally a bit of a close up of the body area of the bass. Just note that the entire neck is yet to be tapered so a lot of the wood on the neck core that you see will be lost.
|
now that is sick
i cant wait to see it finished soundclips when its done maybe? |
Jeez thats looking good,
what car are you getting? |
That is hot man!
|
Thanks for the comments guys
Here is picture of the car I got |
Vauxhall corsa, nice...
And nice bass you're making |
Vauxhall corsa, nice...
And nice bass you're making
Quite correct, except it is called OPEL on this side of the world. Great little car, very happy with it. |
I think Britain is the only place it's called Vauxhall. My nan has one. It goes like **** off a shovel.
I'd much prefer an older Seat Ibiza though. And i didn't know you guy drove on the left hand side of the road...., interesting nice buy anyway, good cars them, and the parts are cheap if it breaks down. |

yes.
I didnt know you were in SA. Sweet bass man, hurry up and finish it lol! |
very nice very nice
|
You better change the rims on that car.
|
^^^That looks fugly to an extreme level
And update time: No work took place on the bass this past weekend and most likely none will take place next weekend. Reason for no work over the past weekend was becasue I was installing sound in my car. Reason for next weekend being without progress most likely will be because I am meeting up with the best man and maid of honour to hopefully finalise a florist for my wedding. |
Hobbes is getting married.
awwwww |
Hobbes is getting married.
awwwww
Ah yes, my tasty man meat will be off the market ladies, so sorry to disapoint. |
Update time................finally
And my apologies, as it is once agin a minimal one. I did not want to get into shaping the neck just yet as I would still like some of the bulk of the neck core to act as guide-rails when routing the headstock, still figuring that one out. Anyway, enough excuses, picture time: Photo of the neck core with the truss rod channel routed Close up of the adjustment area Close up of top of truss rod channel Close up of the bottom of the truss rod channel I am very please with how it turned out considering this was my first attempt ever at routing a truss rod channel. |
My truss rod channel turned out looking like complete ****.
Congrats on successful routering. |
My truss rod channel turned out looking like complete ****.
Congrats on successful routering.
Thank you. I used the fence post / guide rail that came with the routed and did it is about 4/5 passes, the last 2 being about half a mm to get the ends of the truss tod to sit flush with the surface that the fingerboard is going to sit. I found the trick was to take it slowly but not so slowly that the router bit was burning the wood, it did in one or two spots, but that was mainly where I plunged into the wood. |
thats awesome
