Television isn't widely known because the masses can't tolerate anything that's not verse-chorus-verse and out in three minutes.

He gave no reasons for disliking Tom Verlaine, so I gave no reasons for disliking his Pearl Jam crap.
You are too caught up in being indie to notice anything vaguely in the mainstream. I might not like Television that much, but I own their album. It's not widely known because of Verlaine's annoying vocals, and because it's not really a 'punk' album and it was released in '77 with a lot of competition.

As to Scott Herren, they are liked by Rolling Stone, but as the type of mag that Rolling Stone is they would have to be. You can't use that as an aguing point, its not your opinion (unless of course you rank ever album released in the same order.) I suppose you agree that Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield is better than Marquee Moon because it is ranked higher in RS?

Calling me a fanboy and then refusing to accept my opinion at all on a band you like is hypocrisy at its worst. I can understand why you don't like Pearl Jam, it might be because they are too "mainstream" for you, or because Riot Act sucked, or for any other reason. You, however, can't seem to understand why I don't like Television.

The point wasn't that I would rank them at that spot on a list, but that they are well known enough to get a spot that high on the list, and pretty much anyone who knows anything about music has heard Marquee Moon the song if not the album. And you got into this mess looking rediculous messageboard laughing at a band.

Mailman 10-28-2005 10:44 PM
I dislike Pearl Jam because they suck. I have no problem with the mainstream.

Don't give me your "you can't seem to understand why I don't like Television" crap. Your reason for disliking them was "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA".
You still don't get it. That wasn't my reason for disliking them. What I'm saying is that you can't seem to accept that someone can not like Television, and that you are better than me for liking them. If that's your opinion, then you can go and get fucked, but if we understand each other, then I'm ok with that. :)

Scott Herren 10-28-2005 11:06 PM

getting fucked is a good thing here. cultural differences?

I'm sorry, did you read it properly? Honestly, if he thinks that his musical taste is so much better than mine that I can't even comment on Marquee Moon, then he can get fucked. But as I said, "if we understand each other, then I'm ok with that."

OrbDragon 10-29-2005 04:22 AM

Duane Denison of Jesus Lizard and Tomahawk is pretty darn underrated in my opinion.

User Name 10-29-2005 07:24 AM

this is the only part of the forums ive heard television discussed
id say both lloyd and verlaine are both great guitarists

UncleBobbo 10-29-2005 08:13 AM

The guy from Porcupine Tree is really good! I'd also have to agree with the Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam.

Tomahawk 10-29-2005 11:10 AM

I think it is. :-(
Nirvana > Pearl Jam
Cobain has nothing on Mike McCready

RollerQueen 10-29-2005 01:42 PM

Yeah he does. He has bigger holes in his head. Silly.

Mailman 10-29-2005 06:58 PM
I just thought your comment was a really flippant and cocky way to discredit an artist. I replied with the same.
Ok, I think we both just took it the wrong way.

And if you think they are boring, I am very very sorry.

What is your problem? Get over yourself and your "obscure" () bands.

Scott Herren 10-30-2005 04:01 PM

Pearl Jam isn't bad, but really doesn't belong in this thread.

Dreww 10-30-2005 04:42 PM

If you are saying they don't have exceptional guitarists, you need to hear more Pearl Jam.

If you are saying they aren't really Alternative, I agree.

Paranoidd 10-30-2005 04:44 PM

Jeff Buckley

I have heard every Pearl Jam album through Binaural. Unless they have done something amazing since then that I am not aware of then yes, I am saying that they don't deserve mention in this thread.

Dreww 10-30-2005 05:49 PM

Are you saying that "In Hiding" is easier to play than something like a Sonic Youth song?

Bukowski 10-30-2005 05:52 PM
Technically? Maybe. Does Sonic Youth have far more feeling? Yes.

Technical ability is only half of being a good guitarist.
This is the truth.

Dreww 10-30-2005 05:55 PM
Technically? Maybe. Does Sonic Youth have far more feeling? Yes.

I have every Sonic Youth album, and I firmly believe that Mike McCready and Stone Gossard have more feeling than Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo.

Paranoidd 10-30-2005 06:37 PM
Every Sonic Youth album? Impressive. Most hardcore fans don't even.
They're pretty accesible to download. I'm not a hardcore fan and I have 22 of them.

Not so much feeling as it is originality and innovation on SY's part.

Dreww 10-30-2005 09:08 PM
Every Sonic Youth album? Impressive. Most hardcore fans don't even.
I am a hardcore fan. To be fair though, I don't have the Kill Yr Idols EP, but unless it has amazing guitar work, I will stand by my statement that Pearl Jam has the better guitar team. Not only in technical ability but in terms of emotional expression.

Dreww 10-30-2005 09:11 PM

Different strokes for different folks. It's totally subjective really and childish to argue about.

Sam 10-30-2005 09:13 PM

It's not childish to argue about. That's why theres a forum: so people can argue.

Dreww 10-30-2005 09:16 PM

Not when it's something as subjective as who you think is more emotional. If we were talking about influence or impact on the world of guitar playing, then we could argue. Who the fucck are you to tell me Pearl Jam's guitar work is nothing special? Who the fucck am I to tell you Sonic Youth's guitar work is nothing special?

Dreww 10-30-2005 09:27 PM

To each his own. Personally, I don't like trying to get a rise out of people and stir **** up.

Then you'd better stop having opinions which are different than other people's, because that's the only way out.

Dreww 10-30-2005 09:33 PM

Your opinion is sh!t. ;)

Sam 10-30-2005 09:37 PM

I'm mad Sublime is popular, because they don't suck.

alan_pfeifer 10-30-2005 09:49 PM

I really like the guitarist from Dredg....but his name escapes me. Omar's been mentioned many times already, so I'll say he's a BIG fave of mine, as is Mike Enzinger of Incubus and Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead.

also: whoever plays guitars for Sigur Ros and GY!BE.

rubyseyes 11-05-2005 10:33 PM

you should definetely take a look at smashing pumpkins. and a few rhcp.

Dissectional88 11-06-2005 09:02 AM

Bernard Sumner when he was in Joy Division has the best style, but thats just my opinion. I dont even know if Joy Division is considered Alternative. Post Punk was the alternative in the late 7o's though, right?
