I used to like classic rock a long time ago, but I just got sick of it because it's too old and it'll never change. I started getting into punk a while ago and now I can't get enough of it. One of the best parts of punk is the energy that it delivers. There's no other music like it.
|
I really don't like metal or rock, that's not to say that people who listen to it have bad tastes in music per-se. However, it's just that most of the rock and metal i've heard has (to me) been utter rubbish.
|
Metal just doesn't provide the same energy that punk does for me. Nothing beats goin to a good punk show, some of the best times a punk can have.

have you been to a metal show? IMO, they're pretty energetic as well. in my town, at least. and yeah, punk's simplicity turns me off. it's not simplicity for simplicity's sake, but what results FROM the simplicity. like, i find a lot of the songs to be too predictable (an argument that could also be made against rock and metal, i realize) |
i listen to punk more for the "message", and i listen to metal for the musicality.
i'm high and that's the best way to explain it right now. |

I love the atmosphere of punk shows where everyone is friends, and I've never been to a metal show, but I don't think that's there much. |

it's more agressive but mostly the same except the acts are better IMO. |
People at my school think I only listen to punk and ska because I don't like the most popular styles of metal and rock (I can't stand hair metal, nu-metal, what I call overboard rock, grunge, or crappy modern rock). However, I love The Who's early stuff, Beatles are one of my favourite bands, I love the Kinks, I like Chuck Berry, Elvis, and Buddy Holly, and fast forward I like a lot of post-punk and new wave (The Cure are one of my favourites), and I really like reggae, and I'm starting to get into Motorhead. So the only problem I have is that a lot of people who listen to rock around here don't recognize anything but their own brand of rock, which is a very small slice of the pie.

Very true, the atmosphere at a punk show is one of the best parts of the show. The unity at shows is awesome and you dance and stuff with people you've never seen before in your life. |

i know what you're getting at, but IMO there's a pretty good sense of *unity* at metal shows too. it's hard to explain, but when you're moshing to a thrashey metal chorus and you get knocked to the ground, and you get helped up only to get smacked around again, you really feel like you're "one with everyone else", if you know what i mean. |

and the fact that everyone wants to talk about how the shows going/there fav bands etc. |

yeah, i get a pretty good sense of unity at metal shows. i'm pretty sure most genres have that feeling attached to them. and hey, with punk, isn't there little conflicts between the skins and the punks and the anarcho guys and all? or is SLC punk full of sh'it? (i hate the new swearfilters :upset:) |

Also, something I like a lot about punk is the lyrics. I like songs that talk about political issues, unity, anti-racism, and such. Whereas a lot of the metal stuff I've heard talks about just dark and gloomy stuff.
fusty walrus! poop

id rather it be dark and gloomy that about stuff i really wouldent agree with :p besides i dont listen to metal for the lyrics i listen to it for the musicianship. |
I like some Euro prog metal, if that's what its called. Bands like Gamma Ray, Edguy, etc.
|
id rather it be dark and gloomy that about stuff i really wouldent agree with :p besides i dont listen to metal for the lyrics i listen to it for the musicianship.
really? i think lyrics/vocals add a whole lot to songs. with punk, though, it seems as if it's all *too* vocal-focused, with the instruments really being "backing". |
Saying metal is better because of the musicianship is a redundant point in many ways. Listen to the Minutemen. The end.
|
punk is awesome when its done well (the clash, dead kennedys, etc...) but really sucks when shi'tty bands play it (or mediocre generic ones like pennywise and anti-flag). most in the punk forum would agree with that statement. the same argument aplies to any genre of music, including rock and metal. dont judge a genre until you've actually listened to it enough to form an educated opinion.
|
Saying metal is better because of the musicianship is a redundant point in many ways. Listen to the Minutemen. The end.
meh its decent not really my cup of tea but thats onyl one band i think the only other punk band thats focused more around musicianship is Kylahullut. also the thoing about punk that turns me off is the vocals i hate those nasaly wierd clash kinda vocals. |
Listen to Propagandhi. Try them. Punk/Thrash, not like Clash vocals at all.
|
Listen to Propagandhi. Try them. Punk/Thrash, not like Clash vocals at all.
those are the kinda vocals i dont like the musicianship wasnt very good and i really dont like the lyrics (im more conservative) |
I bet you would like Siege. They were a huge influence on Napalm Death or so I hear.
|

crap they dont have any on rhapsody EDIT: im also not big on thrash metal i like Biomechanical, metallica, megadeth, pantera and a couple moe but thats about it for thrash. |
those are the kinda vocals i dont like the musicianship wasnt very good and i really dont like the lyrics (im more conservative)
A Wilhelm Scream, Marathon. Good musicianship and vocals. |
A Wilhelm Scream, Marathon. Good musicianship and vocals.
all the vocals seem to sound the same to me and again the musicianship on these arent really my cup of tea there decent licks but they dont compare to metals stuff, but atleast i liked the lyrics better. |
Did you actually listen to both of those?
|
those are the kinda vocals i dont like the musicianship wasnt very good and i really dont like the lyrics (im more conservative)
1. What's wrong with the Clash's vocals??? I think Joe Strummer and Mick Jones were good singers. 2.That's probably another reason why you don't like punk, because you're more conservative and a lot of punk bands sing about social issues and tend to be more open minded and liberal. 3. Try the Angel City Outcasts. I like them a lot and they have a really good guitarist. |
Did you actually listen to both of those?
i couldent find marathon but i found the other one they have 2 cds and 2 vids. EDIT to above: yeah thats probally that and its not my kind of music instrumentally. im into the more Priest, Maiden, Biomechanical kinda vocals so to me punk vocals like the clash's dont really compare. |
the thing against metal to me is that alot of the "metal heads" i know only care about the guitar solos. They dont really pay attention to lyrics and melodies or anything aside from the talented music
|
Because a lot of metal lyrics I've heard blow.
|
the thing against metal to me is that alot of the "metal heads" i know only care about the guitar solos. They dont really pay attention to lyrics and melodies or anything aside from the talented music
Exactly. Lyrics are really important, in my oppinion. |
Because a lot of metal lyrics I've heard blow.
like i said im not big on lyrics im big on musicianship lyrics are the least i worry about when i listen to metal sometimes theres no lyrics or vocals at all. |
Exactly. Lyrics are really important, in my oppinion.
Same here. |
Saying metal is better because of the musicianship is a redundant point in many ways. Listen to the Minutemen. The end.
i don't think the minutemen really qualify as straight "punk". clearly they're an exception. IMO, they're more in the vain of awesome jam bands like phish or primus, very versatile and fusion-ey. also, i don't think most people like metal for the musicianship, as in, technical skill. it's more that the instruments are used to create more interesting (yes, subjective, i know) sounds than with a repeated power chord assembly. |
like i said im not big on lyrics im big on musicianship lyrics are the least i worry about when i listen to metal sometimes theres no lyrics or vocals at all.
Try listening to the Angel City Outcasts. They have a really good guitarist. Listen to the song "I'm and A.C.O." |
people have tried to show me stuff in the harcore and pop-section too but i havent liked any of it.
Try listening to the Angel City Outcasts. They have a really good guitarist. Listen to the song "I'm and A.C.O."
i cant find any on rhapsody. EDIT: i got ahold of that song on yahoo its mostly like all the other rock guitarist iv heard listen to Kylahullut (there really hard to find) |
1. What's wrong with the Clash's vocals??? I think Joe Strummer and Mick Jones were good singers.
They were good. Especially Joe. And I never thought they were "nasely" at all. So far as musicianship, Topper Headon was one of rocks better drummers, period. Paul is a good bass player and always was, Joe was a solid rythmn guitarist, and all you have to do is hear the Clash live to know Mick was a brillant, resourceful, and creative guitar player. Within the genre or outside the genre. |
I like punk more than anything, but i still listen to music that has a litle metal thrown into the genre, like Black Flag, and Nirvana (neither are metal and i know nirvana isnt punk but you know what i mean, yeh?) I like rock though, its pretty much where it all started, so why hate rock? One thing i find about metal, is the different sort of aggression that it has to hardcore punks. Its hard to describe but i think you know what i mean. I reckon a lot of metalheads hate punk though because of all the pop punk bands out there claiming to be punk. I know this is a way overused excuse but in my experience, its just a misunderstanding on both sides.
