With reference to the cramps, I think that seeing as in the late seventies the Cramps were playing songs like the Drug Train or Goo Goo Muck and calling it psychobilly they should be considered the first psychobilly band. Even though the bands that define the genre for many other people are quite different to the Cramps, I still put them first.
The main problem in calling them psycho is that they don't have a stand-up bass player, and there was even a phase where they had no bass player. As I said, there are strict guidelines for something to be true "psycho" and just a punked-up rockabilly band with mildly goth lyrics. The Cramps consider themselves nothing more than a rock n' roll band, just like the Reverend. |

This is truth. There is a lot of specific characteristics of psychobilly bands. But you can't take away the influence The Cramps had on a good portion of the psychobilly genre. They are a great band. Played a show at the state mental hospital in Napa not too far from me, my neighbour works there as well. |
Well i'm a newbie, but keen on me psycho.
I just wanna say that i love nekromantix, and please everyone spell it right, Nekroman is a great musician and a great guy. I also like tiger army, mad sin, horrorpops (i know popabilly not psycho), and various other bands, i also like skobilly, which is just a rockabilly/psychobilly band with a horn section. anyway thats my two cents. |
The way I see it Rockabilly is a combination of Rock and roll and hillbilly, hillbilly being country and western without the western. This is the definition generally agreed upon among rockabilly afficianados (spelling?). The most pure rockabilly bands will have a stand up drummer as well as a stand up bass player, but then again you can't deny old hasil as being the hippest rockabilly cat therre ever was. I don't deny Nekromantix their psycho cred for not having a stand up drummer and I don't think it should be denied of the cramps for not having a bass player for most of their career.
Vast numbers of pure rockabilly outfits have no bassist at all. |
He does make an interesting point there...
Hasil Adkins never had no bass. |
Tru dat.
|
"I can't have no band, I keep wanting to change chords and I can't expect no one to follow me." -Hasil Adkins

I've definitely been getting into a lot of Psychobilly/Rockabilly bands lately. Tiger Army, Nekromantix, Horrorpops, RHH, Stray Cats. Psychobilly and Rockabilly are great genres of music.
|
yea. sure psychobilly is cool and all, but what about the hair

well....its..........well....its gay |
the pomphawks are amazing. Lot more interesting and cooler looking then plain old mohawks and liberty spikes.
Mad Sin are great, so good that it surprised me to find out they weren't part of the first psychobilly bands and they are actually quite recent. |
the pomphawks are amazing
I agree. |
The hair is a very important part of psychobilly. It's a very very fashion-oriented genre, which is one of the reasons it's so much different than punk rock. In punk, every tries their hardest to pretend it's not about the fashion; "It's all a state of mind, maaaaaannnn!"
|
Mad Sin and The Cramps are the only psychobilly bands i listen to every now and again, either not heard or dislike most of the rest.
|

The psychos are proud of their fashion, as are a lot of the rockabilly revialists. They want to have the complete image. |
Dressing like that and goin to shows and stuff is part of the fun of being a psycho.
|
Same as Ska really...
|
Mad sin's new album is pretty good from what i heard, some really great songs and sofar I like it more than survival of the sickest. I'll buy it when i see them live

well I don't make a point generally of taking photos of my own hair but I'll see what I can do for you. Actually I'll start my own website called allteensexyrockabillythumbs.com and charge you money to see it. Ha Ha Ha |
I don't think they are psycho at all, and quite horrible. Most of the newer psychobilly bands are bad, which is why I was surprised to find out Mad Sin are modern.
Mad Sin are from the 80's The new Mad Sin kicks ass. |
