The Pixies - "Monkey Gone To Heaven"
You know, I've never actually checked out the Pixies before this, and god ****, I was missing out. Very nice song, not too upbeat but just right, awesome to listen to and easy to get hooked on it. It's a good break from listening to alot of fast, energetic, punk and rock bands that I mostly listen to. What great dose of rock. 7.5/10 Recommended Songs: Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - "Bad Reputation" Generation X - "Dancing With Myself" Hanoi Rocks - "A Day Late, A Dollar Short" Teenage Head - "Top Down" |
Generation X - Dancing With Myself (5:59)
I've never listened to this band before, so this is an entirely new experience for me. A musical journey if you will. I can't put my finger on who the singer sounds like. I don't know, good vocals anyways. The song sounds like a mix between 70's punk and 80's pop music. But it's not like a song that you'll hear in some crappy 80's movie, it's very catchy, upbeat, and good. However it starts to get repetitive, but then around 2:45 like a revised chorus begins, more "dancing with myself" but a guitar solo and some "uh uh oh oh"'s are added. The rest of the song is pretty much like the first three minutes, and begins to fade out 20 seconds before the song ends. My Recommendations: The Skalatones - Prejudice (Ska) Junior Murvin - Police and Thieves (Reggae) Fearless Iranians From Hell - Big Crime '89 (Punk) The Levellers - England My Home (Rock/Irish Folk) |

This band seems the like the band everyone got into at once, and no wonder they are really good. It starts off with a good little guitar riff. Vocals come in a bit later, there are two main vocalists, and they have a good punk grimy voice. They switch off for the verses, and one takes the chrous, and then there is a group part. The muisc parts of the song are really good, very hardcore punk sounding, and the vocals are very good as well. This is a very well done song, I like it. It's pretty short as well, doesn't drag on. I dig it. 8/10 Recomendations Velvet Underground & Nico - Femme Fatale (Proto-punk) Leftover Crack - Ya Can't Go Home (Ska-punk) Hank Williams - Your Cheatin' Heart (Country) Hank Williams Jr - A Country Boy Can Survive (Country) Hank Williams III - Hellbilly Joker (Hillbilly Metal/Hellbilly) |

There's a drum intro that makes the song sound like it's going to be really heavy so it surprises you when it goes into this chilled out section with a really cool bassline. I really liked this section. AT about 0:30 the tempo changes and it speeds up. The drumming here is really cool and it sounds like it's building up to something before there's a slight pause and then the intro drums before the vocals kick in. This section is still quite slow but is much heavier. THe lyrics are good but the vocals are a bit grating and at times it sounds like the singer should really be living in a dustbin on Sesame Street. They just sound a bit too forced and constipated. THen it goes back into another instrumental section which is much better before going back into another vocal section where the vocals are even worse. Hoarse vocals like this don't work with this tempo of music. The song then goes back to another instrumental section which leads right up to the end of the song. Musically this song is great, vocally it's terrible. Thankfully the verses and choruses are relatively brief so they don't spoil the song too much. 7/10 Choose from: The Valentines - Blam Blam Fever (First Wave Ska) Toy Dolls - Sod The Neighbours (Pop-Punk) Curtis Mayfield - Superfly (Funk) Johny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues (Country) The Stranglers - Golden Brown (Alternative/Punk) The Cramps - Aloha From Hell (Psychobilly) Dead Kennedys - Moon Over Marin (Pop-Punk) Bad Manners - Monster Mash (2tone) |

alright then, i heard the reverend horton heats cover of this song first and liked it, so i thought i would check out the original. very catchy little bluesy style song, basically just about someone in prison - how he got there, what it's like the riff, fairly basic palm muted country type of thing you cant really say much about this song, its the same riff throughout, with a simple solo, but its a very cool song 8/10 i still think revered horton heats version is better, its slightly different Music For Your Consideration Psychobilly Mad Sin - Nothing's Alright Godless Wicked Creeps - China Chick Punk N Roll The Bones - Dog Almighty Dead Pets - Tokyo Crush Rockabilly The Reverend Horton Heat - Bales Of Cocaine The Polecats - Chicken Walk |

This is a pretty cool rockabilly song with elements of country and Johnny Cash-type storytelling lyrics, about, as the title states, cocaine. Very funny lyrics, and it still manages to be a really cool song, and that doesn't usually happen with songs like this. I wouldn't expect just anyone to like this song, but I think it's worth a try if you like rockabilly. 7/10 My Recommendations: Adolescents - Kids of the Black Hole Flux of Pink Indians - Take Heed Adam and the Ants - Beat My Guest Misfits - Hybrid Moments Pain - Grudge Leftover Crack - Nazi White Trash |
Misfits - Hybrid Moments
Starts off with a short and simple drum beat, reminds me of Uk Subs' Stranglehold intro. The vocals and everything else quickly jump in after a couple seconds of the drums. This is a Danzig Misfits song. I've never liked the Misfits that much, and this song isn't making them sound better to me. It's pretty melodic, and sounds like a pop-punk song, so I don't think this is an average Misfits song. It's short, basically ending at 1:30. I give it 4/10 My recommendations: The Skalatones - Prejudice (Ska) The Adicts - Distortion (Pop-punk) Gorilla Biscuits - Hold Your Ground (Hardcore) |
The Addicts- Distortion
This songs starts off with both guitars playing harmonics. Then the drums come in, followed by the bass. The drums get faster and one guitar stops starts playing muted notes, also progressively faster. This is a really nice intro, and it kicks in great into the well suited hardcore-ish 3 chord verse. When the singer begins, the guitar begins muting again. Then the drum beat changes and a guitar lick is played. The cycle begins a new. Afterwards a guitar solo, or rather a mess of random notes comes in, but it sounds great with the ascending bass line. The 3 chord verse then comes in again, followed by the muted guitar notes. Then that solo thing. It ends with the sound of the power going out. The chorus of this song isn't catchy, like what is expected of this great pop-punk band. However, it's still a very cool song with a good intro and interesting guitar play. 7/10 My Recommendations: Against All Authority: Justification (Skapunk) The Heatskores: Element Francis (Skapunk) The Velvet Underground: The Black Angel's Death Song Violent Femmes: Kiss Off (Acoustic Punk) Toots and The Maytals: Peeping Tom (Reggae) Casey Jones: C.G.I. 2K3 (hardcore) |
Against All Authority - Justification
There's no quiet build-up to this song, it goes in fast straight away. There's about 10 seconds of fairly generic but still entertaining music before the vocals start with two guys shouting "JUSTIFY!" and "JUSTIFY YOUR ACTIONS!" but it sounds like he's shouting "JUSTIFY ERECTIONS!" which makes the song a lot more entertaining. The music continues in the same vein, fast and fun and the lyrics are okay as well but nothing special. At about 1:07 it goes into a slower ska section with some a really cool horn bit before going back into the pop-punk stuff until the end of the song. This song is okay. It's not great but it's still good song. And it's message of finding a reason for boners is great. Sham 69 - Tell the Children
this song is pretty cool, it starts with a horn section with a smooth but simple bass riff behind it, kind of jazzy, and the kick drum sarts a solid beat, which is cool. it then goes into a palm muted verse with snarlyish very british sounding vocals. the chorus is your standard Sham 'everyone sing along' chorus, which sounds cool, and the horns perpetuate throughout the song at various intervals. also, at some point there is a scary electronic voice telling 'all the children in the red light to report to the c urfew zone'. chorus isnt as good as some other Sham songs, and wierdly, this song made me want to listen to 'questions and answers' instead, but yeh, its a cool song. Minor Threat - Straight Edge
Starts with a guitar riff that is used just about all the way through the song, the drums kick off in singnature Minor Threat fashion, fast and hard. Ian comes in with the vocals shortly after the drums, first off talking which turns into shouting about halfway through the first verse. During the change in vocals the guitar riff changes slightly but is not very noticeable but changes back again in the second verse. The Structure of the song is verse 1, verse 2 then then the chorus with the the title of the song being shouted just like in most Minor Threat songs. Very short, only about 45 secs long, but I still love it. 8/10. The songs intro is really cool but quite weird alternating between heavy and futuristic. The drumming is particularly cool. The vocals start at about 0:12. The vocals are fairly standard and each line is followed by another short blast of screeching guitar that gives it the song quite an aggressive feel. The lyrics are anti-white supremacist and fit the song well but are pretty basic. The song goes back into a quick blast of the intro before back into the vocals. This song is fast and furious and gives the listener no break from the action. ABout half-way through the second verse the music changes and gets heavier and more monotonous like its building to something before it goes back into another intro section then a different biut with "NEW ORDER!" being shouted over the top of it. Personally, I think Joy Division are better but whatever floats your boat. Then it returns to the intro section completing the cyclical nature of the song. IT's a good song but it's not great. Fun to listen to but perhaps a bit repetive and short. 7/10 Choose from: Curtis Mayfield - Superfly (Funk) The Valentines - Blam Blam Fever (First Wave Ska) Toy Dolls - Sod The Neighbours (Pop-Punk) The Stranglers - Golden Brown (Alternative/Punk) Stevie Wonder - Boogie On Reggae Woman (Soul) Lonnie Donnegan - Rock Island Line (Skiffle) Bow Wow Wow - C30, C60, C90, Go (Punk) Frank Ifield - She Taught Me How To Yodel (Yodel) I reccommend the Curtis Mayfield. |
THE TOY DOLLS – Sod the Neighbours
The song starts funny with an interruption from the neighbours in the place where Toy Dolls are playing. Someone says: Sod the bloody neighbours and they start singing the TV theme of the show Neighbours, maybe you know it. Then the music starts. Some guitar feedback, then the bass, and then guitar and drums together. Awesome bass throughout the song, it starts doing a catchy and speedy line and keeps doing a similar rhythm but with lots of hooks. The song is full of guitar and bass little fills and sounds awesome. What to say about Toy Dolls’ guitar, maybe the best in all punk. And the bassist in Absurd-ditties (album from where comes the song) is the best I’ve heard in all Toy Dolls discography. Song is catchy and the vocals are not as they use to in this band. So to people who don’t like Olga’s vocals give this a chance. When you’ve listened about a minute and a half of the song you realise it’s a very good song. Then it comes the awesome part. First, the guitar solo, veeery good as always, with some tapping, very nice. And then a bass solo! Strange thing I must say. It’s not very difficult but sounds really good and it’s catchy, with energy and speed. Song continues a little bit more and after a chorus and an ending bass little riff it ends with the neighbours knocking the door. I’m sorry if this is too subjective but this is one of my favorite songs ever. And almost all the other songs on the album are that good, only bad point I can find is lyrics, but they’re not bad, just average. 9.5/10 My recommendations: Satanic Surfers – The Treaty And The Bridge (Melodic Hardcore) Mad Caddies - Silence (Ska-punk) Bigwig - Numbers (Punk) Ignite - Bullets Included No Thought Required (Melodic Hardcore) Choking Victim – Crack Rock Steady (Ska) Good Riddance – Fertile Fields The Filaments - Western Double Standard (Ska-punk) |
Bigwig - Numbers
Begins with a sloppy sounding pic slide, I'm thinking it's totally pointless and they should have just began the song at four seconds avoiding that pic slide all together. You can tell this is going to be a fast song right after the singer yells "Go!" This is my first time having the pleasure of listening to Bigwig, and this is a very good song to start off with, so all of you who haven't heard them yet go download. I'm not going to go look at the lyrics but from what I hear I can make out some politicalESQUE words.. "fuck this war", "fuck this country", you know, that kind of stuff. These guys have to have some hardcore influence. There's a good breakdown around 50 seconds and it sounds like some effect was added to the vocals. I've been getting into a lot of ska lately, but this song just didn't seem to strike me the way a lot of other ska does. The lyrics are cool, and they're funny, but that's all I could really get out of it. The music sounds too much like cheesy lounge music, or something. Maybe it's just not a good song for people just getting into ska. Still, I didn't hate it, so I give it 6/10. The song climaxes (fun word) about 30 seconds before it ends, with Dave Mcwane semi-screaming about being stuck in your town. and thats basically what the song is about. This song really starts off very well. Thats what made me give it a higher score. But for some reason the song just seems boring. Even with the organ(sp?) solo in it. New York Dolls - Looking for a Kiss As most of the bands I review in here, I've never listened to the New York Dolls before. The song begins with who I imagine is the singer saying "When I say I'm in love you best believe I'm in love L-U-V" followed by a short pre-vocal intro. You can tell they are proto punk, there are elements of punk we hear all the time from bands anywhere from 1977 to present day, but it's not quite punk. I can't explain that well. Anyways, I looked at one of their album covers and I asked myself if those were girls. It turns out they're all guys who crossdress for whatever reasons, and I'm judging from that I'd say they're looking for a kiss from a man. Haha, probably not, I didn't look at the lyrics and I haven't been paying attention to the words. Ok, the song is very steadily paced, not too fast or slow, which is one of the reasons why it isn't quite punk. This is a good song and I'll definitely be downloading some more, I give it an 8.5/10 My Recommendations: The Vulcans - Asibiso Jungle (Ska) Slow Gherkin - Weasel (Ska) The Rude Pressures - What'd I Believe? I've always loved LoC's Rock the 40oz, but never got the chance to pick up F'uck World Trade, so I figured this would be a good place to start.
The song, being the first one on the cd I'll assume, starts off with the trademark LoC intro, its got a staticy backround, with heavy drumming and some cool loose-ish bass, and Stza's unique voice cuts right through. "**** World Trade..." (0:21) Strong, fast guitars cut through the static as Stza continues his intro. He talks in his oh so scruff voice about Metal Heads, the Twin Towers, and of course some shamless self promotion "Crack Rock City". Talks about food stamp lines and rehab, the classic stuff. (1:23) The drums start tapping and Stza screams into the mike, starting the song off. The music gets faster, with your basic punk stuff, fast drums, power chords, etc. (1:38) Stza starts singing. His voice really is amazing, its like weather he's talking, singing fast, mumbling, whatever, he ALWAYS sounds like he's screaming. Reminds me a bit of some old Chocking Victim songs, "Infested" comes immediatly to mind. (1:43) Guitars change up, into a nice little riff. At this point I can really tell I like the song, which isn't surprising, as i've loved most of the Crack family's prior stuff. (2:03) Guitars cut out, goes into just bass and drums creating one of those nice "thump thump" techniques, a bit like the intro to Julia by The Horrorpops. Slowly all the instruments come back in, and so does the singing. WOW, the chorus is really catchy, and the singing is slow enough at this point to realize the lyrics are mostly about how the radio sucks and how the same old thing is played over and over. (2:34) Guitars change up, and although I think this is the only instrument that changes, and the pace only slows down a little, it gives this part of the chorus a whole different feel from the rest of it. (2:58) Changes into a really cool sounding little collection of short guitar riffs followed by little drum beats, but does so without changing the pace of the song. Sounds really cool. Stays about the same, with various changes in the riffs, and of course singing comes in. Sounds good. (3:40) Gets fast again, back into a street punk kind of feel, but the not sucky kind of street punk, reminiscent of The Unseen. Song ends with all instruments playing random crazyness, and Stza screaming again as loudly as possible. Overall, really like the song. Lives up to the Crack's name very well 8/10, just because the intro drags on a biiiit too long. Another really good coc'k sparrer song. Starts off with a siren, then the guitar comes in, with a typical catchy coc'k sparrer riff, and then 10 seconds later the singing comes in . Its in all a very catchy song, where you can sing along during the chorus. You can hear the siren during the chorus again. The solo’s is interesting, nothing very hard, but still good. starts off with a steady drumbeat for around 10 seconds before the guitar enters. The lyrics are very thoughtful and heartfelt ("suffering, the pain and suffering"/ "how could they do this to me"), involving their disillusionment with what has become of America. It is a very catchy song, with excellent sounding individual pieces on both guitar and bass, accompanied by a consistant steady drum beat, clearly evident in the shout-along after around 1:30. 4ft fingers- Proud to Know You (pop-punk) The song starts off with a guy screaming: yeah man! And then a psycho laugh. There’s a drum fill in and then the both guitars and bass come in. I can’t really hear the second guitar in the intro very much, maybe because of my bad quality speakers, but it sounds like a bit of a solo. After that the singer starts singing. His voice doesn’t sound like any others ive heard. After the first chorus there’s another little ‘solo’. After the second chorus there’s a bridge, a guitar starts playing palm-muted, and the other plays another little solo and then the guitar starts playing this catchy riff with singing. Against Me!- Sink.Florida.Sink
The song starts off with the words "Not one more word tonight," and the music begins when "word" is uttered. The whole song is only 4 chords (C Am G F), but it's a great song none the less. These chords are played on an acoustic, with a clean electric playing them once each in the backround. When the Chorus begins, so does the piano. A combination of two different "woahs" is also sung. The combination of all of this sounds really amazing. In the next verse, towards the end, some kind of percussion-type thing is played, and provides a build-up into the yelling of "You gotta **** it up," and right back into the chorus. The woahs stop, and the piano plays a nice little part that sounds good me. I find the lyrics genius, and percieve them as getting away from your surroundings with the power of music, and then realizing what really matters. Then upon returning to reality, you try explaining these feelings. Maybe I'm being unfair with rating because they're my favorite band. I give it an 8/10. The intro is nothing special but it's okay. Then the vocals come in, typical Against Me, strained as always. Its quite weird as the vocals seem out-of-sync with the music. This is quite cool but it takes some getting used to. The lyrics and music are good as well. There's a little fill at about 0:55 that leads to this really cool section where the music fades out a bit adn ther's a call-and-reply going WOOOOH-OHHHHH. Then it goes back to another verse with WOH-OH-OH-OH in the background. At this end of this verse the music changes again (it's still good) and there are more WHOOOAS (different kinds this time) before it stops. This is a really good song. All the parts are really cool so it doesn't get stale. 9/10 Choose from: Wat Tyler - The Vicar And I (Punk) The Volcanos - Surfin St. Helens (Surf) Team America - The End Of An Act (Pop) Symarip - Skinhead Moonstomp (Ska) Melt Banana - Surfin' USA (Noisecore) Curtis Mayfield - Superfly (Funk) Wesley Willis - Feel The Power Of Rock 'n' Roll (Wesley-core) Ska Cubano - Revolutionary Ska (Ska) Black Market Baby - Downward Christian Soldiers (Punk) Richard Cheese - Nookie/Break Stuff (Lounge) I have all these on Soulseek (biggaydavefromdarlington) but if you can't browse my files then tell me and I can e-mail the one you want to you. |
Ska Cubano - Revolutionary Ska
Starts off slowly but quickly progresses to an average paced traditional ska song. It's quite enjoyable. I really like the vocals, they're Cuban (or just Cuban influenced?) but I'm not really hearing an accent, and he's singing in English. At two minutes begins a long horn solo, and let me tell you, it rules. This part alone is making me want to give the song an 11 out of ten, but Jesus won't let me. Vocals kick back in near four minutes, and he repeats a lot of the words he said prior to the horn solo. I'm guessing the lyrics are pretty basic, but ska never focuses on lyrics that much. You can tell the song is going to end soon at five minutes (even though it doesn't end for another minute). It ends really well, with more horns and pleasant sounds coming from the singers mouth. haha Really good song, I recommend you all download their album from me, Nick or Joe 10/10 My recommendations: Punch the Clown - Clowns R Us (Ska) The Tossers - The Ballad of NATO (Irish folk punk) The Skoidats - Moonstomp '97 (Ska) |

The Skoidats - Moonstomp '97
It starts of with this really cool plinky-plonk guitar bit with some cool bass in the background. When the drums and vocals kick in they go, YEAH-YEAH-YEAH and remind me of a Toots & The Maytals song (I think its 54-46 Was My Number) then someone goes MOONSTOMP GO! and there's a really cool horn solo that goes on for ages. After the horn solo has gone on for a while you get the Yeah's in the background then another horn solo (on a different instrument I think) this time with intermittent Chkka-Chkka noises and more Yeah's in the background. Then its, you guessed it, another horn solo and this time the other horns join in. Finally after this there are some different vocals with a talkover about ska (a la Symarip's Skinhead Moonstomp) before there's some horns (for a change), this time its short blasts of horns alternating with shouts of BOO-YA! and other such phrases before, in a total change of direction for the song, it finishes with some horns. This is a good song and hornier than a 13 year old with his Dad's magazines. If you like trad stuff or the songs I mentioned in the review you'll like this. This song starts straight, with all the instruments together in what it could
be named the chorus. The guitars are cool, without distortion at first, or very light distortion, playing some kind of barre chords but not struggling them. Well you have to listen to it. Then some palm muted while it goes the verse. Basically the song is chorus verse chorus verse etc. The lyrics are funny. They’re about Bill Clinton and sex so you can imagine. At first I didn’t found this song very interesting. But it ends up being catchy although it’s not a great song. There’s nothing special about it. Drums are the same throughout the song and the guitars just have two patterns. Bass just follows the guitars when they palm mute and during the other part it stays the same. So...there’s not very much to say about this. The vocals are good and it’s not a bad song, but just average. I give it a 7/10. Definately not the best song that Joe has recommended. My choices: Mad Caddies - Silence (Ska-punk) Good Riddance - Fertile Fields (Melodic Hardcore) Ignite - Bullets Included No Thought Required (Melodic Hardcore) Leftover Crack - One Dead Cop (Punk) Toy Dolls - Stay Mellow (Punk) Against All Authority - Walking Revolution (Ska-core) The Filaments - B.P.C. (Ska-punk) Satanic Surfers - Hero of our time (hmmm...pop-punk maybe?) I recommend to pick this one. |
Toy Dolls - Stay Mellow
I've never been a huge fan of Toy Dolls. It's not that I disliked them, I just couldn't get into any of the few songs I'd heard enough to try out more. This song, however, changed that. The song starts out with one of those quick, and sort of intricate guitar lines they seem to be known for. The singing is high pitched, and very... british. It's certainly a singing style of its own kind. It has good lyrics, about keeping cool and not worrying about shit when it comes your way. It's very different, but it's a great punk song. I must definitely hear more from the Toy Dolls. 8/10 My Recommendations Beastie Boys - Deal With It (Punk/Hardcore) Filth - You Are Shit (Punk/Crust?) Leftover Crack - Gang Control
Starts up with a nice little drum bit and then a smooth bass line. then the verse comes in with a catchy beat and kinda raspy vocals. When the chorus comes in, you want to yell along with the "FUCK THE POLICE". about 1:50 in through 2:10 theres a nice little fill. then it comes back strong with the chorus. as soon as it ends, you hit the repeat button to make sure it plays again.... and again... this is a great song. id never really heard that much leftover crack, but i think i might buy that album now... 9.5/10 Suggestions Sweet - Ballroom Blitz (classic rock/glam rock) Gorilla Biscuits - Things we say (hardcore/straight edge) New Mexican Disaster Squad - Vultures (melodic hardcore) The Clash - Career Oppritunities (punk) Hit the dirt or Peanut Butter and Jelly - http://www.purevolume.com/fivehours (ska) |

Starts off with a hi-hat count in, then a nifty descending bass line, then kicks into the stereotypical fast, 80's hardcore song. I like the vocals, they have a cool rythm. Goes into a really spiffy breakdown part, then back to the hXc. I am now a firm fan of GB. 10/10 Suggestions-If these have been done before, don't hurt me, but there's d'amn near 120 posts and I don't want to read through them all. Choking Victim - Crack Rock Steady
This is my first introduction to Choking Victim and I have heard a lot of hype about this song, so I decided to check them out. I wasn't very impressed to be honest though. Ska was never my thing, so I am going to come from a non-biased standpoint to be fair and all that honorable stuff. The song starts off with some drugs........ Okay, I will ignore that to be fair. Then the drums kick in and it's a pretty chill song I'll say. The bass is cool, but the guitar is generic as ever. These guys apparently haven't realized they are white yet. Anyways, nothing in the song really stands out besides the cool bassline. No, I don't like ska, but that's holding nothing against this song. I have heard much better songs in the genre and outside as well. The drumbeat speeds up at the end, but it sounds out of place. You might like it, if you like drugs. 6/10 Choices: Reverend Horton Heat - 400 Bucks (Rockabilly/Psychobilly) Cursive - Staying Alive (Indie) Swingin' Utters - Pills & Smoke (Pop-Punk) BigWig - Still (Punk/Pop-Punk) Subhumans - No (Anarcho) |
Subhumans- No
Begins with a nice simple bas intro, with the vocals cutting in after around 6 seconds after the fourth repetition. this song is one of the strongest ever in terms of biting vocals, sneering at society's attitudes from the outset. In the first line: religion ("No i don't belive in Jesus christ/my mother died of cancer when i was five"), the system ("no i don't belive in the system/nothing it does makes sense to me") and the police force ("No i don't belive in the police force/police brutality isn't a dream"). The guitar enters quickly at aroiund 15 seconds, playing a steady repetitive riff before reverting to a slower pace before slowing down at 30 seconds, for another lyrical attack about society's attitude that rebelion is sporadic ("don't worry, you'll get over it/ you'll grow up"), and influenced by drink and drugs ("you don't really mean what you say/ you've had too much to drink"). Dick's despise of the system occurs throughout the song popping up in the lyrics as the song regathers pace ("you're just part of what a despise/ yes you're part of the f'ucking system/ i ain't blind i can see oyur lies") This is an incredible song, arguing against social attitudes and assumptions in under 1:40 seconds.
The Cramps - Haulass Hyena
I like Psychobilly but I haven't heard much Cramps stuff. The intro is really cool. It immediately starts off with some piercing guitars before the bass (It sounds like bass although I'm sure I heard somewhere they didn't have a bassist) and drums come in the background complementing the guitar well. This goes on for a little bit and manages to avoid getting repetitive. It cuts to a drumroll then there's a laugh that sounds like the guitars did before the verse starts. The music is typical Psychobilly and the lyrics are meaningless. The vocals are okay and fit the music well. After the verse there's anotther laugh and a really cool instrumental section before it goes back to more vocals and then another long instrumental section. I thought the instrumental sections were better than the vocal bits which got too repetitive. After this there are some more verses before it goes into a really weird short heavy section before the end with the sound of things smashing. This is a good Psychobilly song. If you like Psycho you'll like this. The music is great but the vocals and the lyrics (with their repetetiveness) let it down. 7/10 Choose from: Atom & His Package - Hats Off To Halford (Pop-Punk) The Volcanos - Eruption (Surf) Melt Banana - Monkey Man (Noisecore) Curtis Mayfield - (Don't Worry) If There's Hell Down Below (We're All Gonna Go) (Funk) Wesley Willis - The Frogs (Punk) Black Market Baby - This Year's Prophet (Punk) Richard Cheese - Nookie/Break Stuff (Lounge) Toots & The Maytals - 54-46 Was My Number(Ska) Get them on Soulseek (biggaydavefromdarlington) or I can email them to you from sketchyjoe@gmail.com |
Atom & His Package - Hats Off To Halford
This is my first introduction to the band, and not knowing this was a joke song, was hoping this song was about Rob Halford of Judas Priest. I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was. Sort of. The song is more about metalheads than Halford. Anyways, if you didn't know, Halford came out of the closet a while ago. Basically, this song is trying to point out that most metalheads are homosexuals. The song starts off with a cool riff. The song has a happy vibe throughout. In the middle of the song, there is a part which sounds like "Sea World Music". If you've never been to Sea World, they play 80's pop style synth music with a happy vibe a lot. The lyrics are a bit juvenile, but other than that, it's pretty cool. I will most likely look into more of their material. It's a good song if you're in the mood. 7/10 P.S. Next time you do a review from sketchy's list, check out the Richard Cheese song. I highly recommend it. Swingin' Utters - Pills & Smoke
I haven't heard anything by Swingin' Utters in like 5 years, so trying them out again after this long was pretty cool. The song opens right away into an upbeat sound that, musicwise, sounds very much like the Adicts. Overall the music is simple, but not to the point of being boring (like a lot of punk music can be), driven by one of those constantly moving basslines you hear in a lot of pop-punk. The singing is alright, and the lyrics are about being a young, angry teenager living life on the streets. It's good, but it's not great. 6.5/10 My Recommendations: Beastie Boys - Deal With It (Punk/Hardcore) Pageninetynine - Comedy of Christ (Hardcore) The Toasters - Devil and a 45 (Ska) Ed Gein - You Suck at Life... and I'm not Talking about the Board Game (Grind) Filth - You are Shit (Punk/Crust) |
