Sorry for interuptting the advanced DT discussion in here, but I was wondering what you guys thought their best album was? I've been meaning to try and get into them for a while now, but haven't really for one reason or another. They're obviously so incredibly talented that I want to hear more of them. If someone could send me a song or 2 to get me started, that would be great. :thumb:
6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence remains my favorite release, followed by Images and Words. Some songs: "The Glass Prison" best DT metal song "Metropolis Pt. I" legendary "Blind Faith" awesome awesome "Learning to Live" probably best composition: not much wankery, but tons of good music. "6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence" Best conceptual work. Easier on the wankery than the "Scenes from a Memory" album and much more prominent on harmonic sophistication. Really good music in there. |
My favorite album is scenes from a memory as i love how they made the entire album tie into each of its songs. It never really seems to end. I think Petrucci reached hs peak on Awake. Train of Thought was my first album by them and although i like As I Am and Endless Sacrifice i was kind of disapointted with the album as a whole. I havent heard Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance(except for the Glass Prison ) and havent heard Images and Words (except Pull Me Under and Under A Glass Moon) which is my favorite song by them, the latter. They are an immensley talented band and , just my opinion Portnoy is the least talented of them. I like the drummer from Symphony X more and to me, Portnoys work gets a bit repetitve over time.

Live at Budokan is phenomenal(sp?). Before I got that I had Awake, Scenes from a Memory, Petrucci and Ruddess, and Liquid Tension #2, but what got me on Budokan was the heaviness of As I Am, Dying Soul, and In the Name of God, **** I love that riff. But being the eternal Tool fan, what if Carrey and Keenan came in to replace DT's respective members?

Does anyone find it weird when a DT fan is also a fan of Metallica? It's like a paradox (sorta), an intelligent DT fan listening to Metallica...?
And does anyone know if LaB is in Australia yet? |

I think their best album is Awake but alot of people would disagree. The best first album to go for would probably be Images And Words. Theres a couple of tracks for download at http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=378 I'd suggest trying Learning to Live first and Stream of Consciousness. |

Message me on AIM some time and I will suit you up with some songs if I am around at the time...
Don't get me wrong i love dream theater!! But they'd be so much better with a different vocalist and better lyrics, their vocalist and lyrics are their downfall. I mean the drumming and guitar work is spectacular to say the least
John Petrucci their guitarist write majority of the lyrics, and I think the lyrics are quite awesome. |

really weird, normaly it was like 20 DT threads a day, and now we have an official DT thread, no one posts

Ya, this is what SFK was afraid of. |
can u give me the best DT album to start of on (im not a prog/technical noob so you dont have to start me on a mainstream friendly album.)
|
Scenes From A Memory
That is their best album I do believe, and is their best to start out on as well. Make sure you listen to it as a whole all the way through since it all interwines. |

jealous (sp?) |
Glass Prison is by far the song I olike best. I really can;t stand LaBrie's voice. Portnoy is good but I'd rather hear Danny Carey or Thomas Haake. Petrucci is good but I prefer Laiho.
|
I always found The Glass Prison a bit over-rated, I do enjoy it, but I could never see what the craze over it is.
And am I the only one who loves LaBrie's Voice? |
I like Labrie's voice, too. I've defintely grown accustomed to it, and can't imagine any other vocalist to replace him...
DT are great. I have all of their albums (including the live ones), Scenes From New York, and I'll be getting Budokan for Christmas... Most people think Petrucci is going down hill, but I disagree. He is a master at writing solos that fit a particular song. The reason that the solo is so wanky in As I Am, for example, is because the song is about letting loose and not listening to anybody, just doing whatever the hell you want. The solo fits perfect with that mood... Anyway, ACOS is BY FAR their best song, and I agree with whoever said it before that Awake is their best album. Nothing can beat A Mind Beside Itself (Erotomania, Voices, The Silent Man). The lyrics and isntrumental sections in Voices in particular are eargasmic... So, yeah. Dream Theater rocks, and I hear they are going into the studio pretty soon for a new album which, according to JR, "It'll be completely fresh and new..." |
Labrie is a great singer. Atleast he actually sings. I've seen some people say that they don't like Labrie but they worship some guy who just screams.
it's a cray-zay world. |
I'd say the only screaming singer who is above Labrie would be Mikael Ankerfeldt, but that's mostly because you can understand what he is saying still, it fits the music perfectly, and he can sing clean just as well...
|
Imagine Dream theater without Labrie but with a screamer and a band like children of bodom with Labrie replacing Laiho for vocals. See the difference... Both are amazing and their singing fits perfectly their music. I think labrie is the only singer that DT could have and still be rockin... Yeah, it's Labrie or just crazy instrumental stuff!
|
I got Images and Words last week. sweet album but i think not as much as SFAM. thats just a work of art
|
Agreed, Images and Words is excellent, but I have to say Scenes From a Memory Is most defently their best.
|
Am I the only person who thinks that DT should just go instrumental?
|

Listen to Liquid tension experiment. Its DT without Labrie and Myung and its only instrumental |
Listen to Liquid tension experiment. Its DT without Labrie and Myung and its only instrumental
Got both of the CD's. I noticed a distinct lack of Myung. |

One. Two. Three. They also have more of a jazzy feel to their music in LTE as well... And I love Labries voice, I don't think any one else could fit the spot for vocals in that band more then he could. |

just kidding

lets get some conversation going again. Whats everyone's favourite Petrucci solo? I'm going to have to go with Home, it blows me away everytime I hear it.

That's a really good one, but the Blind Faith one totally kicks my ***. And my favorite Petrucci solo of all time is the one off of "Truth" from "An Evening with Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci." After he filled ToT full of absolutely ****ty needling solos, this proved to me that he hadn't lost his stuff. |
Dream Theater are probably still my favourite band, but to be honest after nearly 3 years of holding that No.1 spot I've kinda lost interest. There's just so much more stuff that I listen to now. Still, even though they aren't as regular on my playlist now, some songs still remain some of my favourites, in particular A Change Of Seasons, which is probably my favourite song ever.
I just realised I haven't bothered to listen to Scenes From A Memory in about 5 months, even though at one point it was my favourite album.
I was about to say that IDENTICAL thing. Omg. Anywho DT mean more to me than any other band because they changed my life. They got me into good music and inspired me to play guitar. :chug: rock on. |
After he filled ToT full of absolutely ****ty needling solos, this proved to me that he hadn't lost his stuff.
Shut up about how the TOT solos didn't suite your taste. We heard you the first time. Stream of Counciousness is probably my favourite, then Home, Fatal Tradgedy, Endless Sacrifice, Jaws of life/IBS(From John's upcoming solo cd) and In the Name of God (Including the unison). |
does anyone else that has seen this notice the lack of petrucci on there? I mean it shows him here and there but 75% of the time, the cameras are never on him during the solo's, but it shows the other people that are barely playing anything. opinions anyone? I got Once In A Livetime/Images And Words(Live In Tokyo) in the same dvd and i must say the images dvd is most definately worth checking out. Has some of the most craziest petrucci soloing i have ever seen or heard.
|
What do you all think of Portnoy and Petrucci doing vocals every now and then? Specifically, on "The Glass Prison"? Some people have told me Portnoy's singing was 'laughable' but I actually quite enjoy it. And until I got a live video of them playing TGP, I had no idea he was doing the singing in the beginning, I always thought they had just done something in the studio with LaBrie's voice...
|
I don't know why, but whenever I hear any petrucci solo, it's always alternate picking. Does he have any other variety? I've bearly heard him sweep, bearly hear him playing mind-boggling arps, bearly hear him doing tapping stuff...
Hey I think he's one of the fastest alternate pickers out there, but I find his solos a bit boring honestly. Shed some light on me DT fans, I wanna hear some more petrucci solos that have more variety then what I've heard in "images and words, awake, and SFAM." |
