Nooo...
Get the defribulator!!

Happymeal 07-31-2004 08:57 AM

Denali-Gunner

I heard this song on the Jade Tree comp., which stands out from the rest. This is the first one I've heard from them(just a month ago), and suddenly i got infatuated with their sound. Intro sounds like your typical alt/pop(guitar and vocals enter, followed by the bass and drums), but as the song progresses, it sounds very dream poppy and sensual*rarr*, along with the lyrics("I'll get you before you get me" i think). They kinda remind me of The Cardigans..hehehe. This one could've been longer and had some more parts...but a great, great song, especially if you're new to them like me. Although i went to their site and found out they already disbanded..darn.

9/10

My picks:

Kind of Like Spitting-Birds of a Feather(if you're already tired of Dashboard Confessional, this is a good alternative. Love the violin)

Two Ton Shoe-Medicine(I don't know why nobody knows TTS!! If you like listening to the old Incubus and 311's funky songs, i seriously recommend this band to you)

Pelican-Drought(Progressive metal. My friend told me to listen to this, but i haven't downloaded it yet. You listen to it, and tell me what you think)

Mae-This Time Is The Last Time(Jars of Clay-ish "modern" emo, if you're sick of everything else..)

CarnageFairy 07-31-2004 09:29 AM

dibs on the Two Ton Shoe song, because Two Ton Shoe is a friggen awesome name.

CarnageFairy 07-31-2004 09:48 AM

**** typos, I was searching SoulSeek, Kazaa, and Limewire for Two Ton Shoe, when it was actually Two Tone Shoe.

Ok, anyway, on to the review...

When I first started the song, I realized that this is a straight up funk song. Starts out with a classic funk bassline and some distorted guitar. The person singing has a pretty good voice, and it really suits the song. There's backup vocals going ooooooh ahhhhhh which are really cool. Gets old kinda quick, though.

Overall, a decent fun song, just not what I like.

I give it a 6/10.

Dibs on Trophy Scars, I've been meaning to check them out.

Trophy Scares - Sleep Little Nemo -- The Kidnapping.

I liked this song, mainly because I'm into a lot of these type of bands. It probably won't be a favourite for everyone out there. I liked the intro, starts out slow with the twinkly guitars, then hits you hard with the distortion and vocals.

4/5

This band really reminds me of Taken, if you like Trophy Scars you should definately get some songs from them. I'll make them one of my song suggestions.

All Scars - (tk.1) Early Set (Is that the name?)

Cool intro with the feedback. Classic little stick click. Nice catchy part on the off beat. Simple but catchy. Reminds me of a video game. The vocals could be mixed in better. I like the heavier part. Lots of feedback. Cool bass line. I really like how loud the bass is. It adds to the song. I'm coming around on the vocals. They're mixed well for the song. Back to the offbeat thing. It feels kind of empty. The song is pretty repetitive. I've only heard two parts excluding the intro. The feedback heavy and the offbeat thing with it's little video game part. The drums are really dull. Aside from the bass that song basically sucked. It had cool bits (offbeats) but mostly I just wanted to hear something else happen.

Soli i Sombra - The Butcher

I'm intruiged already, very new age-y and echo-y, with slightly etheral singing. Seems to be a really good chillout song. Vocals getting stronger now, goes into the song proper. You could get into quite a nice groove listening to this. Now there's words, which seem a little scary, he's singing about killing and stuff.

Has now gone into a louder section, many voices which I like. Wow she's going high. Sounds a little bit like Amy Lee in a weird way.

Now just the instruments, some strings coming in. More echoes. I'm really liking this. Once again, one of those songs that could use repeated listening - always a good thing. Had enough of this song now though, should definitely end about here. Ooh, it's changed, there's a bit of solo, can't really tell what instrument it is, probably some sort of classical guitar. Ok, all very nice, let's stop now. There's some strange fuzzy sounds and a buzzing thing, weird... kinda like bees. Now some whistling, generally an outdoors kinda sound.

And it's stopped

That was nice, but it did seem to go on a bit, so I'm going to give it a ~drum roll~ 6.5/10

My picks:

The Libertines - Can't Stand Me Now (good, slightly edgy indie pop, probably familiar to British MXicans, but worth a listen for anyone else)
india.arie - Video (fiesty, singer/songwritery kinda thing)
Gavin Rossdale - Adrenaline (bit rockier, may not strictly fall into the alt/indie category, but I'm sure we can live with that)

Happymeal 07-31-2004 08:09 PM

Wups! My bad, pixies.. i didn't read the first post so i just posted mine on random. hehehe. Anyways, sorry i don't have time to DL right now, though Eriatarka is my favorite song on De-Loused, is that a live version??

By the way CarnageFairy, their name really is Two Ton Shoe, they have a website. Honestly i've only heard 3 songs from them(the other two are Believe and Paper Bag, in case you're still interested)..but i like 'em a lot even if they're a bit formulaic for most people's taste..i like my songs a bit poppy, hahaha

The Libertines - Can't Stand Me Now

OK, so I've heard of the Libertines, but haven't actually heard any songs. Not sure what to expect.

Well, it's pretty repetetive. Just basically the same thing all the way through with a few variations. I don't really like the vocals, they're a bit boring. He's kind of quiet, and I think he's trying to sound edgey or paranoid or something, but I don't think it works.

Um, overall, the song is alright, but a bit underwhelming. Maybe it'd grow on me, but right now I give it:

5/10

OK here's my suggestions:

Belle & Sebastian - Lazy Line Painter Jane
My Morning Jacket - One Big Holiday
Television - Marquee Moon
The Replacements - Alex Chilton

lilsolsman 08-01-2004 08:44 AM

I'm gonna do the Belle and Sebastian one

lilsolsman 08-01-2004 09:03 AM

Belle & Sebastian - Lazy Line Painter Jane

The intro is ok, nothing really special.. The vocals are kinda cool but do get boring kinda quick.. The chorus is.. not so very special either.. Then a woman starts singing and that does make it way cooler.. (the guy was booooring) But still i don't think it makes this song very special.. My bro who is sitting next to me (a more frequent belle and sebastian listener) does like this song so i think if u like the rest of their stuff you'll like this too
me: 4/10 More Frequent Belle & Sebastian Listener: 7/10

Hot Hot Heat - Oh, Godamnit (Just a very cool song)
The Shins - So Says I (Song with a bit of a 60's feel to it)
The Sheer - It Only Gets Better (Cool Dutch Band, pretty energetic)
Travis - Humpty Dumpty Love Song (Cool Lyrics, strumming chords)

Dancin' Man 08-01-2004 09:32 AM

Undib.

Robert Crumb 08-01-2004 12:05 PM

I'd like to give the Shins song a try if no one else gots it...

Robert Crumb 08-01-2004 01:29 PM

The Shins - So Says I

Talk about a 60's throwback, this screams British Invasion short of Vox guitars and Edwardian suits. Unless they've got those, too, in which case they've done their research. It's definitely not a bad thing, though. The vocalist seems to have mastered a style that seems to be teetering on collapse at points, deftly crooning and flying into a falsetto squeals on occasion as well. His energetic style would lead me to believe that they can get the crowd on their feet at a live show. The guitar line flutters by nicely over hard hitting drums and sounds remarkably reminiscent of Dave Davies.

While the lineage is definitely clear, it no way detracts from their sound which seems utterly carefree. It may not reek of originality but it definitely has a unique charm, the kind of charm that drew people to that first wave of British bands in the first place. I had been meaning to check out the Shins a long while ago but never got around to it. If this is evocative of the body of their work, it might be time for me to check them out further in depth.

7/10

My suggestions are:

Yo La Tengo - Nuclear War (Cover of a classic Sun Ra song, here's one version: http://www.epitonic.com/artists/yolatengo.html)
The Olivia Tremor Control - California Demise Pt.3
Metric - Combat Baby
Sun Kil Moon - Salvador Sanchez

Well_Respected_Man 08-01-2004 02:38 PM

The Olivia Tremor Control - California Demise Pt.3 2:47

I'm a big Olivia Tremor Control fan at the moment and I'm just getting into Black Foliage. I've heard the other Calirornia Demise Parts ont the singles and beyond collection so it sounds familer (rythmn guitar parts) but different (horns, piano, and different tempo). The vocals are very nice as usual and the rare fuzz bass makes the song even more special. At 1:15, it's just quieter and the singer is going "Friends", I should examine the lyrics more. It's back to the main verse with a nice distorted guitar line in the backround and ends on an electric beat that goes into the next song. The piano and horns really make this a great song, this rating as one my favorite OTC songs.

9/10 I love this song

im a big MMJ fan but this is one of my least fav songs by them , the first 1:30 is my favorite part and i do like the bass, but at about 53 seconds i think the song gets kinda boring and that Jim James ( i think thats the vocalists name ) get a bit tiring and sluggish afterwards , but the solo at 4:00 is pretty good but other than that im not a big fan of this song

Actually, just for the record, The Shins are from New Mexico, and aren't actually brit-rock revival, though I can defintely see how So Says I sounds like it.

Rockaliser Baby -- Bonzo Dog Band

Starts out with an accordian, so it must be good.
Then the lead singer goes into a sort of showtune type of ditty. Kinda reminds me of Supertramp or Cheap Trick or something. Horn solo is cool, the horns keep squeaking. Then there's a sort of speaking part with what sounds like two different guys.

I think the part where he goes Ahhhh ahhhahahahhhhh is the chorus, if this song even has a chorus. Another speaking part and some jamming on a piano. The lyrics seem pretty good, nothing amazing, but still good. And the music is awesome. Now it sounds like some seagulls are calling.

It picks up at the end and then quickly fades off.

Cool, fun song. 9/10

I've been meaning to check them out for like.. FOREVER.... I've heard lot's of great thing about this band so i hope that they can live up their reputation...

At The Drive In - One Armed scissor
The short little intro is cool but the vocals are sorta anoying to be honest.. And the chorus is also not really cool.... I... Don't like this song... The guitars are good, no doubt but the vocals over it are really really buggin' me.. i thought more of this band but i guess that it's not really my kinda music...........

Elliott Smith- Son Of Sam

the intro begins with some nice acoustic guitar work. and it blends rather well with the piano.this continues throughout the verse.
i think the lyrics are really good and go really well with the song.

about a minute and a half into the song it really starts to pick up with a change of pace with the guitars and most notably the drums. after that for a little while its just the guitar and the piano playing together. then theres some more great singing for a little while and then thats about the end of the song.

overall i like this song alot great guitar work and singing 8.5/10

Silverchair - Israel's Son

Starts out with a pretty funky bass riff. Some guitars come in and a slow riff starts. I kinda like it. The singer comes in and i like the voice.

Chorus; they just change the verse riff up a little.

Another verse. Then the bridge has a squealing guitar solo followed by more vocals and the original bass line. The drums here are pretty cool. They go back into the chorus and then they change it up a little. They introduce a new riff and pick up the tempo a little. "Put your hands in the air" was kind of lame. The next bridge, the singer screams and the tempo picks up again with more yelling accompanying it. More "put your hands in the air." One last scream and it ends.

ehh, it started off alright, got a little repetitive but then picked it back up a little towards the end.

8.5/10

Smashing Pumpkins - Drown

Hmm. Good start with a nice wee guitar riff, Drums and bass join in nicely. Vocals quite quiet, seems like it's building up to a big chorus.

Some lead guitar, nothing fancy. Back to verse with soft vocals. Still feels like it's building up to a big chorus...

Ah here we go. Heavier guitars come in. Vocals still rather quiet. More lead guitar. Okay solo, not much of a melody to it. Drums now. Vocals back again to the verse.

Chorus is upon me for the second time. Very one line then drum fill. Dave Grohl anyone?

Another small guitar solo. This time with wah. Now at 5 minutes of an 8 minute song and there's nothing to make me want to listen again. There's now some sort of screaming guitar noise that if it continues, i'm going to hunt the guy down and bop him on the nose. Less screaming of the guitar, good.

Seems like a very psychadelic song, nothing you could sing along to.

7 minutes gone now, been no vocals for about 2 mins i'd say. Just some guitar pick scratching and the drums/bass.

7:30, same thing.

He's making a very 'whaley' sound with the guitar now, deserves a good bopping.

8:15 and the song is over.

Overall opinion: Started off really well with a nice guitar riff and some meaningful lyrics. Built up well to a semi decent chorus but nothing to make me want to listen to it again. The 3/4 minute long of just instruments was simply horrible. This song will Not be going on my play list.

Overall - 5/10

My reccomendations:

James - Laid
Space - Avenging Angels
Kid Creole and The Coconuts - Stool Pigeon
Oasis - Stay Young
