I think Franz Ferdinand is a really bad and weird name.
maybe they had a fascination for the man!
He did cause the first and second world war :thumb:

sacrifice93.2 03-11-2004 01:59 PM

^^^WWII was a side effect of World War I, so, I guess he did start it, indirectly. Anyway, Mudvayne would go in this category, as would Spineshank.

NJMetalMeister 03-11-2004 02:15 PM

Definately Borknagar, because the band them selves said the name has absolutely no meaning.

Little Emperor 03-11-2004 02:24 PM
Actually it's Yiddish, I believe. Although I could be wrong.
Aye, that's the one, I knew it was something crazy like that (no pun intended).

What about Dog Fashion Disco as another one as well, that's pretty weird.

btoto 03-11-2004 02:43 PM

i heard of 2 local punk bands called:

1. grandma's fart
2. smells like teen vagina

and a heavy metal band called:

metal ejaculation

TomHimself 03-11-2004 02:45 PM

There's also a band called:
Blink 182 and Sum 41... what the hell is the meaning behind those names?
Sum 41 was formed 41 days into a summer. :p

MetalMan882 03-11-2004 04:44 PM

I was going to say Dog Fashion Disco

Merzbow is pretty weird, in both musical content and moniker.

Zakka 03-11-2004 04:55 PM

About the Blink 182, a curious thing: on E igh T wo . You know, the first and last letters are the same.

Bleh, the band sucks anyway =P

Reel Big Fish is strange and I dont get the "X" in Symphony X. The Mars Volta and their musics all have strange names.

Berner 03-11-2004 04:57 PM
Pink Floyd = Not sure.
I was pretty sure that it is the names of some famous American blues players combined.

koRnymetallica 03-20-2004 03:35 PM

Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster. Surprised that hasn't come up yet.
White Stripes. Why????
Mushroomhead.
downthesun.
Puddle Of Mudd. Crap name, crap band.
Rammstein. Translates as 'ramming stone' apparently. Weird.

Kert Rift 03-20-2004 03:41 PM

Chinaski -> China ski

Mattacular 03-20-2004 03:48 PM

Pink Floyd is named after two blues musicians: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

Led Zeppelin changed from the New Yardbirds when Keith Moon said that their act would go over like a "lead zeppelin" (meaning it wouldn't fly)

PURESlipKnoTFaN 03-20-2004 04:05 PM

yeah well no one said this band... Squirrel Nut Zippers

pearljamaddict 03-20-2004 04:27 PM

I heard a local band called "Piggy got Pubes". I think its a really **** name, but theres just no talking to the guy who came up with it....I cant think of any bands right now that everyone has heard of with weird names. The Foo fighters is a pretty weird name, but that has something to do with the second world war, I think the Foo Fighters(the origionals, not the band) were guys sent to find alians during WWII? I dunno, cant remember

Scott Herren 03-20-2004 04:37 PM

...and you will know us by the trail of dead
Echo & the Bunnymen
Fantastic Plastic Machine
Neutral Milk Hotel
Super Furry Animals
The Flaming Lips

h00t_h00t 03-20-2004 04:38 PM

Labrat - Or is that just a cool name?
The Itchy tits - a band of psuedo rawk chix got a passing mention on some TV show
Sheephead - Well I thought it was weird, though they are welsh so it could have a double meaning ;)
The (international) Noise conspiracy - Err.. yeah...

Just looked at some old Rock Sound CDs

Bulletproof Electric Revenue
Mercury Tilt Switch
Kids Near Water
5ive's Continuum Reasearch Project
Cars as Weapons
The Sex Machines :thumb:
Part Chimp
(X) is greater than (Y)

I knew I kept these CDs for a reason :D

Badmoon 03-20-2004 05:23 PM

I think The Big Brother and The Holding Company is a slightly weird name.

Per Ardua Ad Astra 03-20-2004 05:25 PM

Anal cunt

That name's probably already been said but i'm too lazy to look through the whole thread for it so...

/wins thread

Mabus 03-20-2004 05:50 PM

My Friends band is called

'these are not the droids you are looking for'

another guy 03-20-2004 06:00 PM
Blink 182 and Sum 41... what the hell is the meaning behind those names?
Blink 182 wanted to name their band Blink, but there was already a band called Blink, so they each chose a number and they put em together and the result was none other than: Blink 182

Sum 41 got their name because the band formed on the 41st day of summer at a Hole concert.

another guy 03-20-2004 06:03 PM

Toad The Wet Sprocket
Squirrel Nut Zippers
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

Foo Fighters is the name that was given to extremely fast fighter planes that were supposedly seen by both sides during World War Two. At the time both sides just assumed that they were more advanced fighter planes from the other side, but it was discovered after the war that neither side had been sending them up, so a lot of people have speculated that they were alien space ships.

Why is Alice Cooper an opposite?

Megadeth isthe name of a bomb. So yes, you're sorta right.

lethal dose 03-20-2004 11:05 PM

to those people who were wondering where blink got their 182 from, i believe they took it from scarface, because thats how many times Tony says f.uck in the movie, thats what the band said anyways

Badmoon 03-20-2004 11:09 PM

My two friends came up with the name "HIV Positve" that's pretty **** weird. Of course my band will not use it for the reason that we play a Bluegrass/Acid-Rock type of Rock, similar to The Grateful Dead. So it definatley wouldn't blend.

dougefresh 03-20-2004 11:28 PM
