I didn't know there was an A Custom heavy ride but I'll check it out. I still want some nice wash so I don't want to go too heavy, just looking for the next step up in "ping".

Thanks

Aaron 08-14-2009 03:44 AM

I don't think they exist. The 21" A Custom Ping is great and does what you describe. I've got a 22" K Heavy Ride which I think is amazing. Check them out if you can.

Hey guys im new to the forums and i am looking for a crash cymbal to compliment K light hi hats, a k custom 16'' fast crash, 14'' zbt crash, 18'' zbt crash ride, and 10'' wuhan splash, 14 '' aquarian china. im looking for a crash cymbal to compliment those and im wondering if u guys could throw me some suggestions on a cymbal or two.
thanks

Seafroggys 08-21-2009 05:33 PM

Wow, you have a mix of decent cymbals and crap cymbals. Its really hard to get something that compliments all of them when they don't even compliment each other (K's and ZBT's? opposite end of the spectrum right there)

Its best to shoot for a sound you want, and replace what you have (namely the ZBT's) and then go from there.

MW drummer 08-22-2009 12:08 AM

yea i know i got two bad cymbals but thats why im getting rid of the zbt crash with the purchase of this new crash.

Seafroggys 08-22-2009 12:24 AM

What you need first is a new ride. If you want to stay in the K or K Custom realm, I'd recommend a K Heavy Ride. That's my second favorite ride, after the A Ping.

fishbulb 08-23-2009 10:42 AM

I second the motion of a new ride.

Much more needed than a new crash since you already have a nice K Custom.

For those who don't recall, current setup includes:
Fusion-sized Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage
13" Yamaha Musashi Snare
13" Pearl Piccolo Snare
K Custom Hybrid hats
14" AA Rock hats
17" Vault crash
19" AAXplosion crash
12" Wuhan China
18" Wuhan China
20" A Custom Projection Ride

Recently broke the Wuhan crash, and looking to replace it. Any ideas one what would fit well in there? Never done extensive splash shopping, so I'm not well-versed on the range of sounds to expect, and unfortunately my local shop has a pitiful collection of splashes currently.

Additionally, I'm looking to re-head all of my drums before the studio next month. Typically I've gone with coated single ply over clear single ply on toms, "dot" over hazy 300's on the snares, and bass has been powerstroke in the past, and is currently a superkick I which I like less, but may have tuned poorly. Reso is stock. My band plays more hard rock/pop punk music, so if there's something more fitting to that style, I might want to move to those for the recordings.

Finally, where is the best place to shop for stuff nowadays? Guitar Center? Musicians Friend? Massmusic?

FL3P 09-10-2009 11:10 AM

I would think that for rock/ pop some clear Emperors would give you a good sound. That way you get some low end and some attack which is what most rock drummers want. You may want to try one out first to see. As far as the crash goes, what do you think you want that the other two crashes don't offer?

Permanent Solution 09-10-2009 01:58 PM

Sounds good, I'll see if I can get a hold of some emperors.

Typo there initially, sorry. Looking for a splash, not a crash. My crashes are everything a man could want :D

FL3P 09-10-2009 03:24 PM

I guess it depends on how "splashy" you want the splash to be. The bigger they are the louder and slightly more crash like they will be. If you liked the trashy sound of the Wuhan Zildjian makes trash splashes as well.

Excellent I'll try to poke around a little bit. Thanks for the response.

Best non-kevlar head for a 10"x14" kit snare? I want sensitivity, but something to control the ring. I've tried all the CS style heads, and am now considering a thin head + moongel combo. Any other ideas?

Seafroggys 09-17-2009 01:41 AM

a thin head may not stand up to thicker sticks, if that's what you'll be using.

FL3P 09-17-2009 05:28 AM

Did you try an Emperor?

Aaron 09-17-2009 06:01 AM

I use 8AWs when I can find them, if not 7AN Manhattans.

I've been avoiding Emperors, but I think it may be a possibility down the track. I'd love a Fyberskin II with a CS Dot under it, but that'd be too much to ask, lol. I hate the feel of two-plies.

Slayter507 09-24-2009 06:50 PM

Hey I'm a jazz drummer, looking for a new ride cymbal. I want a 22-24 incher, with really good stick articulation and a mellow ping (not too high pitched and cutting, but not too low pitched and dull either). Anybody have any suggestions?

Seafroggys 09-24-2009 07:10 PM

Can't go wrong with Ziljdian K's. Might want to look into the K Heavy Ride. Dark with lots of ping.

Aaron 09-24-2009 07:20 PM

I use the 22" K Heavy for jazz but for low-volume you need something smaller to pair with it. I've got it paired with a 20" K Crash-Ride. If you're into livelier jazz, or fusion, it's perfect.

I'd suggest looking into the 24" K Light Ride, it's a bit more expensive, but the extra size drops the pitch and allows you to control wash a lot more.

Alternately there's the Meinl Byzance Extra Dry Rides. They're lovely. I highly suggest them, but make sure you try them in person as I've come across a few with a bit of harshness in the wash.

after some advice

I have a pair of XS20 medium hats and the top hat has about a 7mm crack in it, I have cut out cracks from cymbals before I am just wondering from anyone with experience how much it will effect the sound/play.

Seafroggys 10-10-2009 02:01 PM

Have any of you tried the Remo Vintage A head? I bought it because the shop was out of regular coated Ambassadors. Apparently its 2 ply, one 7.5 mil, the other 3 mil (this was how the original ambassadors were made apparently). I just put mine on today for a gig. It sounds great. Just wondering if anybody else has any experience.

My hats broke on me about a year ago (under warranty, thankfully!) and they sounded alright most of the time even so. Trashier and quicker decay. I didn't play with them much once it was cracked though because I wanted it replaced.

Aaron 11-15-2009 01:17 AM

Alright. I can't decide on the final cymbal for my setup. The choices are:
18" K Custom MT Dark Crash
18" K Medium Dark Crash
18" K Crash-Ride

To pair with:
13" K Hats
16" K Custom Special Dry Crash
20" K Crash-Ride
22" K Heavy Ride
17 & 19" K Chinas

I've got splashes, and other cymbals I use in stacks, but yeah. What you think?

fishbulb 11-15-2009 02:04 AM

You already have a crash ride so why get another unless you really think you'd use it differently than the one you've already got. Just outta curiosity: You're not willing to venture out of the Zildjian K line?

Aaron 11-15-2009 06:23 AM

I like Ks, they all sit well together. I've got some non-K splashes I use, but any non-Ks I've owned I generally sell after a while as they don't fit with my set. I thought having the smaller version of the K Crash-Ride would be good for pairing, but I know what you mean. I've tried a heap and it's come down to those three.

ant_182 11-15-2009 09:52 AM

id go for the k medium dark crash I think that it'd add something different to your sound, but still match the other cymbals if you get me?

fishbulb 11-15-2009 01:22 PM

What type of music do you play again, Aaron?

Aaron 11-15-2009 03:38 PM

Well my recorded output is ambient/IDM stuff, but I play in a hardcore band and a 9-piece fusion group. Also setting up a trio for weddings/50ths gigs.

Cymbal wise I need something that responds at different volumes, and isn't too bright when you lay into it. I play a lot of rute/brushes.

SgtBaker 11-15-2009 05:33 PM

so im in the market for a new ride. i have a K custom hybrid which is great, it is just really bright. im looking for something better for jazz as thats where my playing has been heading lately. im open to anything really, but ive been looking at bosphours turks which are real nice.

Aaron 11-15-2009 05:35 PM

Ping or wash? Dry or wet? etc?
