Cluster is a must.

raison d'etre is great, but most of his catalogue is extremely dark and depressing.

monster's ball is a good ambient sountrack.

vidna obmana, steve roach, & robert rich are all good artists.

and if you can find it, i recommend picking up jeff greinke's "cities in fog".

I'd second anything by Tangerine Dream, so seconded ^.

and I'll add Benjamin Finger and August Hell. all of which can be downloaded for free from http://thatspunk.linustorvaldsfacts.com/#category8 :)

edit:
also I'm uploading 4volt's catalog, which will definitely impress you all. he's one of the very finest ambient/idm artists out there.
How do people around here feel about Aphex Twin?
I quite like his newer and ambient works, for this thread, I'd reccomend Selected Ambient Works (vol. 2)! It's quite minimal, with a very odd and ackward feeling. Can't help loving it :)

I used to fall asleep to his ambient works, but I actually began getting some pretty scary dreams, so I stopped listening to it while I sleep and the bad dreams went away!

EDIT: Here's a link so you guys can listen:

Speaking of Easy Lee, a good artist to check out is Ricardo Villalobos. Enfants and Vasco are both superb minimalist releases, technically not ambient. But if you can dig ambient you'll definitely dig him.

jcober 04-26-2009 10:05 AM

"A Silver Mount Zion". They are more post rock, but they have some really beautiful soundscapes and whatnot. Great stuff to fall asleep to.

Phototropic 04-26-2009 10:26 AM

duno if they've been mentioned but I really like Ahkmed

Get the drone zone station. It's just a radio station with some really great ambient music.

Sleep Research Facility - Deep Freize was good

Ventriloquist 05-15-2009 07:15 PM

Blackfilm - Blackfilm -Amazing
Shulman - Random Thoughts
Celtic Cross - Hicksville
Solar Fields - Leaving Home

nedchambers 05-16-2009 12:28 PM

people need to stop mistaking post-rock for ambient

oren ambarchi is great, and everyone that has recommended stars of the lid is bang on. labradford, tim hecker, i'd say fennesz too but he's terrible to revise to.

Aaron 05-26-2009 08:31 PM

Quiet dynamics =/= ambient.

You all need more Brian Eno.
