Its not meant to be a true EUB, more of a normal fretless in upright form, like the Dean Pace Bass or the Barker Bass.

Well Good and Bad news time.


Bad news is that I am going to have to re-do the neck core from scratch.

It is starting to split apart due to insufficient glue used, partly my fault partly somebody who I though had more knowledge about glueing's fault.



Good News, I still have plenty of timber and now know more about what I am doing.



Basically the new neck core is going to be slightly thinner than the previous monster I made. It is also going to have more laminates in it to add strength and I have ordered a trussrod from Stewmac, so that will go in there and the neck will be slightly thinner too.


Guess its just one of those things, but at least now I have had the experience and can learn from it.

What kind of truss rod are you going to use?

A dual action 1/8 one from stewmac.

I feel that way I can make the neck slightly less bulky, as the trussrod would allow me to adjust it.

Now all I am trying to find out is if I need to glue it in place. Been browsing talkbass.com but am still a bit unsure at this point.

Have decided to just post and people can comment if they want, no more bunching up the pictures at begining, will use those reserved posts for finished product and other relevent things.

Anyway picture time, they are not very impressive as I had to start the whole neck core from scratch as mentioned earlier.

It looks like the new neck core might shape up to be a 9 piece one, no worries though, 9 is my lucky number.

Well strictly speaking its not a true EUB, more a normal fretless in upright format like the Dean Pace Bass.

The scale is going to be 35 to give a little more tension on the strings couple with the fact that I am only going to string it up with D'Addario Chromes.


As for upright strings, one of the music stores stocks them, but I have no need unless I buy an acoustic upright.........someday :thumb:

If your wondering what the outermost laminate wood is I will give a bit more deatil shortly.

Proper update and some input needed on your guys side.

I needed to track down some more wenge for what has now turned out to be a 9 piece laminate neck.

But unfortunately I was unable to find any decent stock at my normal supplier. So What to do.

Fortunately they did have stock of some very nice afromosia. A wood that is used a teak substitute sometimes. It is also quite bright tonally and similar to maple. Have a look at the Warmoth.com Guitar Neck Woods section to get an idea of its sonic properties.

So anyway I picked up a what looks to be two decent pieces of Afromosia.

Lets say that once they had been planed slightly and I could see the gain more clearly I was very impressed. So much so that I have a problem on my hands.

I now am no longer certain that I want to use the beautifully figured piece of Wenge I have for a fingerboard. The afromosia is suitable for fingerboards just in case you were wondering, and this bass is only going to be strung up with flats.

So now I need some help in coming to a decision.

I have 3 possible pieces of wood for my fingerboard but do not know which to use.

And I did say I would tell you what the outermost laminate was. If you have not guessed by this stage it is indeed Afromosia.



So which do you guys think would make the best fingerboard?

Keep in mind that the wings are Bubinga with a figured wenge laminate top, you can check the photos to see what I mean.

I think I would go with the Afromosia just to get some variety. i was first thinking the Wenge would look best. but then, i remembered the Wenge laminate top.

By the way, I really admire your carpentry skills, and I'm real excited to see how this turns out for you.

I am also very partial to the afromosia, not just for the grain and colour but because it will hopefully add some brightness to the tone according to Warmoth.com, considering the wenge and bubinga are know for their more low mid presence.

I have a sneaky feeling that unless there really is opposition to the afromosia it is going to be the winner.

Or unless it looks crap with a danish oil finish.

I'm gonna have to do with the Afromosia too, Hobbes. It's different and still looks nice.

All work on the project is on hold until further notice.


I will not go into details but I no longer have access to any of the tools.

Well good news.

The build will continue this weekend.

Also in the process of buying a car, so that will also take place this weekend so I cannot promise much work will take place.

Well I now have access to the tools again and did a little work this weekend, and I do mean a litte, reason for that is that I have been buying a car this week and have been busy with insurance and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

Picked it up yesterday and I am very happy with it, I would post a photo in here but is currently raining outside and I don't feel like getting wet, so maybe I will post a photo of it later this week.
