most My Bloody Valentine
some Sonic Youth
some Pixies
Breeders
most Slowdive

but in a band with a female singer myself, before we had our own material we covered Just Like Heaven by the Cure. it sounded awesome. i'd say many songs originally sung by guys sound cool when changed to female vocals. as long as it has a strong melody, so she isn't just wailing in monotone.

OrbDragon 11-02-2005 04:04 AM

PJ Harveys early stuff is pretty rockin'. "Rid Of Me" is produced by Steve Albini.

Ani is one of my favorites, but her way of songwriting is an acquired taste. Personally I think she's amazing. Her songs reflect her personality, and not many songwriters today have that ability.

Another vote for Ani DiFranco here.

Or possibly check out Dot Allison if you're going for a chilled vibe.

You may want to check out Sneakerpimps as well, they have a female singer with a beautiful voice, and the music is awesome.

Iron Maiden. I think "2 Minutes to Midnight" would sound cool with female vocals, and plus they have "Maiden" right in their name there! Think about it!

They don't have 2 Minutes to Midnight on their site though. :-(
On the whole I don't like girl performers. There are the odd expections (like Metric and Stars, both of whom I know you're familiar with) but mostly I avoid girls in music, unless it's pop. I don't even like most of the SY songs where Kim Gordon sings. :\
yeh. theyre ok as band members but im not really into girl singers.

Check out The Pretenders. They were an American new wave band with a female vocalist, Chrissie Hynde. Good stuff.

Also, my avatar is a great female singer
And I forgot to mention Blondie, I love Blondie. Try "Heart of Glass".
I figured you'd like Blondie.

lilsolsman 11-08-2005 08:16 AM

So, a little update, i checked a lot of the bands in this thread and had fun doing so. The girl we're talking about disliked everything and is probably going with Michelle Branch or something. I'd probably just have to play acoustic or something. It's gonna be ghey.

A lot of people in the world aren't cool like us Alt/Indie'ers. :(

There's this band called My Precious from...errr...Malaysia I think? Not exactly sure. But they have duelling female vocalists. Pretty awesome stuff.
