and metal doesn't
im complete opposite i get completly blown away when i hear shredding like that and the riffs can get stuck in my head for days.
Exactly. Metal doesn't have the kind of energy I like and it's not original at all from my point of view (if it's original from any point of view). Agreed with that?
Are you joking?
No, it said so in purevolume and I read it so I'm sharing it. If it's wrong you correct me but no irony please. |
If you limit yourself to one genre, you are hendering your self. Music is a lot more then one genre and should be enjoyed that way, you may prefer one over the other, like I perfer punk and its sub-genres over rock and metal, but I don't hate those genres and like plenty of bands within them. Anyone who says another genre 'sucks' usually is an ignorant fool who feels the need to be elitist to make themselves look bigger.

I love Rock and Metal, although most of the new Metal is trash.
A lot of my friends that listen to punk seem to hold Rock and Metal in contempt, scoffing at those that listen to it. I used to listen to punk and feel sort of the same way, as if the R&Mers were missing out on something, buuut now I prefer R&M over punk and yeah it just got me thinking. Like, the other day, I was telling my "punk" friend how much I enjoyed this Rush album I got, and she's like "really, Rush?" as if Rush is like, baby music! Then I asked if she had ever heard any Rush, and she hadn't. It's a filthy prejudice, and it seems to be pretty common, at least among people I know in real life.
So anyway, what do you guys think of R&M/its listeners?
   why should i be against rock or metal? i love both genres with such a passion.... |
I have nothing against metal. I don't like it, if that is what you are asking. But I have nothing against it. I don't mind some music with metal influences and what not. And it's the genre that introduced me to rock n roll when I was eleven or so. Or I should say that I noticed when I was eleven. I liked it for a couple of years. I thought it was rock n roll, really. Then I heard the Who and the Clash and just never looked backed. Kind of put me on a different path. So no, I don't like metal. And I don't know what you mean by "rock", but I'm pretty sure I like it.
Thats my opinion, more or less.
My brother is a huge metal fan, I think the metal he listens to (Power Metal) is cheesy and laughable. But I do like some metal bands. Black Sabbath, Iron Madien(some of the time), and electric wizard.
 power metals my fav i love the cheesieness (SP:confused: ) i listen to dragonforce, nightwish etc and love em all.
Exactly. Metal doesn't have the kind of energy I like and it's not original at all from my point of view (if it's original from any point of view). Agreed with that?
not really...i find punk incredibly boring and hardcore/emo unlistenable. |
I like both equally. Freaks Union are my faverouite band, along with Arsis. One is punk, one is Death Metal.
Same way, I can listen to Leftover Crack/Bad Religion and Cryptopsy and Decapitated back to back Death metal, and punk |
I listen to bands and if I like them I will continue to listen to them.
|
I used to like classic rock a long time ago, but I just got sick of it because it's too old and it'll never change. I started getting into punk a while ago and now I can't get enough of it. One of the best parts of punk is the energy that it delivers. There's no other music like it.
|
I really don't like metal or rock, that's not to say that people who listen to it have bad tastes in music per-se. However, it's just that most of the rock and metal i've heard has (to me) been utter rubbish.
|
Metal just doesn't provide the same energy that punk does for me. Nothing beats goin to a good punk show, some of the best times a punk can have.

have you been to a metal show? IMO, they're pretty energetic as well. in my town, at least. and yeah, punk's simplicity turns me off. it's not simplicity for simplicity's sake, but what results FROM the simplicity. like, i find a lot of the songs to be too predictable (an argument that could also be made against rock and metal, i realize) |
i listen to punk more for the "message", and i listen to metal for the musicality.
i'm high and that's the best way to explain it right now. |

I love the atmosphere of punk shows where everyone is friends, and I've never been to a metal show, but I don't think that's there much. |

it's more agressive but mostly the same except the acts are better IMO. |
People at my school think I only listen to punk and ska because I don't like the most popular styles of metal and rock (I can't stand hair metal, nu-metal, what I call overboard rock, grunge, or crappy modern rock). However, I love The Who's early stuff, Beatles are one of my favourite bands, I love the Kinks, I like Chuck Berry, Elvis, and Buddy Holly, and fast forward I like a lot of post-punk and new wave (The Cure are one of my favourites), and I really like reggae, and I'm starting to get into Motorhead. So the only problem I have is that a lot of people who listen to rock around here don't recognize anything but their own brand of rock, which is a very small slice of the pie.

Very true, the atmosphere at a punk show is one of the best parts of the show. The unity at shows is awesome and you dance and stuff with people you've never seen before in your life. |

i know what you're getting at, but IMO there's a pretty good sense of *unity* at metal shows too. it's hard to explain, but when you're moshing to a thrashey metal chorus and you get knocked to the ground, and you get helped up only to get smacked around again, you really feel like you're "one with everyone else", if you know what i mean. |

and the fact that everyone wants to talk about how the shows going/there fav bands etc. |

yeah, i get a pretty good sense of unity at metal shows. i'm pretty sure most genres have that feeling attached to them. and hey, with punk, isn't there little conflicts between the skins and the punks and the anarcho guys and all? or is SLC punk full of sh'it? (i hate the new swearfilters :upset:) |

Also, something I like a lot about punk is the lyrics. I like songs that talk about political issues, unity, anti-racism, and such. Whereas a lot of the metal stuff I've heard talks about just dark and gloomy stuff.
fusty walrus! poop

id rather it be dark and gloomy that about stuff i really wouldent agree with :p besides i dont listen to metal for the lyrics i listen to it for the musicianship. |
I like some Euro prog metal, if that's what its called. Bands like Gamma Ray, Edguy, etc.
|

really? i think lyrics/vocals add a whole lot to songs. with punk, though, it seems as if it's all *too* vocal-focused, with the instruments really being "backing". |
Saying metal is better because of the musicianship is a redundant point in many ways. Listen to the Minutemen. The end.
|
punk is awesome when its done well (the clash, dead kennedys, etc...) but really sucks when shi'tty bands play it (or mediocre generic ones like pennywise and anti-flag). most in the punk forum would agree with that statement. the same argument aplies to any genre of music, including rock and metal. dont judge a genre until you've actually listened to it enough to form an educated opinion.
