Rev Horton heat is psychobilly? i thought he was rockabilly
He kinda walks the fine line between...

Horrorpops may not be fully psychobilly, but they're still quite awesome, and they've got the influence going on. Kinda like a cross between a Phil Spector girl group, No Doubt back in the good old days and The Nekromantix.

I don't think they are psycho at all, and quite horrible. Most of the newer psychobilly bands are bad, which is why I was surprised to find out Mad Sin are modern.

RIP Ian Curtis 09-29-2005 11:04 AM

Fair enough. The newest Horrorpops album is the only post-1990 album I've bought since "White Blood Cells" by the White Stripes came out.

AndreTheHyena 09-29-2005 11:38 AM

The Reverend isn't psychobilly, he's just a rockabilly revivalist, or you could even go so far as calling him "punkabilly".

The Phenomenauts aren't, either, they're also just rockabilly/punkabilly, though they call themselves "rocket roll".

There are fairly strict guidelines to be a "psycho" band. For instance, the Cramps, who were the first to call themselves "psychobilly" (a term coined by Johnny Cash, FYI) aren't even true psychobilly.

Incidentally, I'm seeing the Reverend tonight for the second time. He puts on a killer show.

I think there is a definite division in psychobilly between the band that combine rockabilly with being "Psycho" and singing about zombies and kinky sex. And then bands that combine the more solid punk sound with rockabilly.
So I'd put the Cramps in the Psycho end of Psychobilly and then things like early Living End and Reverand Horton Heat up the punk end.

With reference to the cramps, I think that seeing as in the late seventies the Cramps were playing songs like the Drug Train or Goo Goo Muck and calling it psychobilly they should be considered the first psychobilly band. Even though the bands that define the genre for many other people are quite different to the Cramps, I still put them first.

any one heard devils brigade, matt freemans psychobilly band? they are pretty cool

:p :p :p

Pseudo Man 09-29-2005 10:40 PM

I think we should invent a new genre for tiger army called "emobilly" and then you people can talk about them in a different thread

RIP Ian Curtis 09-29-2005 10:42 PM

or gothabilly or something.

you should really come over man, it's the best 500 albums on tely and they just had Joy Division, Talking Heads, The Sex Pistols, Nick Cave and now Bohemian Rhapsody is on.

The main problem in calling them psycho is that they don't have a stand-up bass player, and there was even a phase where they had no bass player. As I said, there are strict guidelines for something to be true "psycho" and just a punked-up rockabilly band with mildly goth lyrics. The Cramps consider themselves nothing more than a rock n' roll band, just like the Reverend.

This is truth.

There is a lot of specific characteristics of psychobilly bands. But you can't take away the influence The Cramps had on a good portion of the psychobilly genre. They are a great band. Played a show at the state mental hospital in Napa not too far from me, my neighbour works there as well.

rolling thunder 09-30-2005 08:41 PM

Well i'm a newbie, but keen on me psycho.

I just wanna say that i love nekromantix, and please everyone spell it right, Nekroman is a great musician and a great guy. I also like tiger army, mad sin, horrorpops (i know popabilly not psycho), and various other bands, i also like skobilly, which is just a rockabilly/psychobilly band with a horn section.

anyway thats my two cents.

Pseudo Man 09-30-2005 09:36 PM

The way I see it Rockabilly is a combination of Rock and roll and hillbilly, hillbilly being country and western without the western. This is the definition generally agreed upon among rockabilly afficianados (spelling?). The most pure rockabilly bands will have a stand up drummer as well as a stand up bass player, but then again you can't deny old hasil as being the hippest rockabilly cat therre ever was. I don't deny Nekromantix their psycho cred for not having a stand up drummer and I don't think it should be denied of the cramps for not having a bass player for most of their career.
Vast numbers of pure rockabilly outfits have no bassist at all.

RIP Ian Curtis 10-02-2005 07:32 PM

He does make an interesting point there...

Hasil Adkins never had no bass.

AndreTheHyena 10-02-2005 09:37 PM

Tru dat.

Pseudo Man 10-03-2005 08:18 AM

"I can't have no band, I keep wanting to change chords and I can't expect no one to follow me." -Hasil Adkins

Ghostfire3 10-03-2005 04:32 PM

I've definitely been getting into a lot of Psychobilly/Rockabilly bands lately. Tiger Army, Nekromantix, Horrorpops, RHH, Stray Cats. Psychobilly and Rockabilly are great genres of music.

Skidmark Steve 10-04-2005 01:52 PM

yea. sure psychobilly is cool and all, but what about the hair

Scabies 10-04-2005 01:53 PM

I'm listening to Mad Sin right now. Awesome. What wrong with the hair?!

well....its..........well....its gay

Brain Toad 10-04-2005 03:18 PM

the pomphawks are amazing. Lot more interesting and cooler looking then plain old mohawks and liberty spikes.

Mad Sin are great, so good that it surprised me to find out they weren't part of the first psychobilly bands and they are actually quite recent.

Ghostfire3 10-04-2005 05:14 PM
the pomphawks are amazing
I agree.

AndreTheHyena 10-05-2005 01:50 AM

The hair is a very important part of psychobilly. It's a very very fashion-oriented genre, which is one of the reasons it's so much different than punk rock. In punk, every tries their hardest to pretend it's not about the fashion; "It's all a state of mind, maaaaaannnn!"

Drop The Baby 10-05-2005 03:42 AM

Mad Sin and The Cramps are the only psychobilly bands i listen to every now and again, either not heard or dislike most of the rest.

The psychos are proud of their fashion, as are a lot of the rockabilly revialists. They want to have the complete image.

Ghostfire3 10-05-2005 05:01 PM

Dressing like that and goin to shows and stuff is part of the fun of being a psycho.

RIP Ian Curtis 10-05-2005 07:57 PM

Same as Ska really...

skateMASTERbater2 10-06-2005 10:42 AM
