If there was a vote for Most Overrated Lyricist, I don't think it would be a longshot to say I'd win.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 06-13-2005 04:00 AM

Yeah, that would give me some drainage, but I don't think the side effects are worth the benefits.

SubtleDagger 06-13-2005 09:55 AM

zky, post your retarded song in the entries thread, not here.

Dude, shut up.

Your IP wasn't blocked. You can't post threads within the first 24 hours of being banned. No one can. Just wait a day.

Bigbadbob 06-15-2005 12:31 PM

So does any one know?

Saw Dredg last night...pretty good show. I guess about 300 people there at $10 a head. Total gate I'm thinking around $3000. What's the breakdown on this, roughly? Promoter/venue's gotta take a big chunck. There were 2 opening acts. They played 30 min each. These guys gotta eat, pay motel, buy gas to drive to the next gig.

I'm thinking $3000 doesnt split too many ways.

Was it at a bar? if so the venue would be paying them, right? Also, dredg might be doing some gigs to promote their new album so might not worry about profit.. The opening 2 acts arent gonna get squat and really should do it for free as Dredg is providing them with free publicity.

Wow, that's unbelievably stupid.

Most bands don't even make enough to tour. Saying that opening bands don't deserve to make any money becuase they get publicity is complete nonsense.

Bigbadbob 06-15-2005 02:59 PM

Yea. They have to get paid. I was wondering what the breakdown might be. It wasnt a bar. One of them old movie theaters from 50's that have live music now. About 500 seats. I saw Al Dimeola there couple weeks ago. About 500 people at $35/ea. So thats $18,000.00. for just one band.

Not really. The venue makes a good amount of that.

Bigbadbob 06-15-2005 03:24 PM

Yea...that's what I was wondering. What's the split. The venue had 4 concession ppl, 2 security, couple guys at the door, not sure how many back stage. 10 people at min/wage for 6 hours...thats about $500 alone. Then there was ads in the paper for 4 weeks. I guess ticketmaster is covered in the service charge. Seems to me a $10 a head show might buy the band a nice meal and not much more.

SubtleDagger 06-15-2005 03:37 PM

The cardinal rule is usually this:

Bands who can draw in big crowds make more than enough. Bands with decent fan bases make enough to live off of. Bands that are more underground barely make enough for gas and food.

Bigbadbob 06-15-2005 03:57 PM

Explains where your "sellouts" come from doesnt it. They're starving.
