I find that odd that you would compare Porcupine Tree to a band that you love that being Radiohead even though you do not like Porcupine Tree.
It really isn't that odd. I already said that I respected Porcupine Tree for their instrumental ability, but they have a tendency to sound a little too cheesy. Radiohead also, obviously, has great instruments, but doesn't preen cheesiness.

porcupine tree are amazing. Saw them live and they were exceptional

Dang good review! Porcupine Tree are an excellent progressive-experimental band! They really need to be heard by fans of Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Tool, and of course Opeth...

Great overview man. I love Porcupine Tree, I went to see them 2 weeks ago and it was one of the best shows I've been to. Everyone who likes PT should check out Blackfield too, Steven's project with Aviv Geffen, some great mellow rock music.

Oh, and Trains is still one of the best songs ever.

So true...

xantir 04-21-2005 03:22 PM

Really nice work! Good to know that I`m not the only PT fan in the world. :) I like <<In Absentia>> album best. Wedding Nails <3

Yeah, Blackfield kicks ***. I don't have their album, but I do have like 7 songs in my computer.

albinoblacksheep 04-22-2005 12:55 PM

Saw them in concert yesterday...absolute best live sound ive ever heard.
God, Deadwing songs sound so amazing played live, especially Shallow and Halo.
They also played some older PT stuff like Even less or Smart Kid...and of coarse Songs from In Absentia like Sound of Muzak, Blackest Eyes and TRAINS.

Awesome Konzert, band was in awesome condition (especially the rock solid rythm section!) and im looking forward to seeing them again later on this year...

Too bad you find Stupid Dream "too cheesy", I dont. Oh well, its taste afterall.

Haha, after the concert som mofo tried to steal wilsons Effekt Board...but the crew stopped him. And i got to shake Colin Edwins Hand, weeeee

Dried Muffin Remnants 04-22-2005 02:34 PM

Don't worry it's not 80s teen-flick cheesy like Joe Satriani. It's just cheesy cheesy.

BradyEB 04-22-2005 04:35 PM

Great Detailed effort man.

Grant 04-23-2005 07:54 AM

Agreed, Satriani's music is a cheese fest.

I try to make common comparisons for the simpletons.

black\m/metal 04-23-2005 07:10 PM

I'm seeing them in about a month, i cant wait, and it sounds like they kick *** live! but to anybody who has seen them on t heir recent tour, are they playing with any other acts, just is it just PT?

TTTSNB 04-24-2005 07:52 AM

I love Opeth's ****ation album, also Pink Floyd. I've heard that PT is similar to both of these. is this true?

3rdplanet 04-24-2005 09:01 AM

Steven Wilson of PT is influenced by Gilmour, and the band do have strong Pink Floyd influences.

I wouldn't say that their sound has that much in common with D*mnation though.

clearvision 04-24-2005 09:03 AM

Meh i would. That is the comparison i always make, Opeths clean stuff and Floyd.

In Europe they toured with Anathema.

Glad you like it :)

You should give Signify a listen if you like Voyage...although it's a little less psychadelic it kinda bridges the gap between Voyage an In Absentia I would say.

Magicaltroll 04-24-2005 09:16 PM

Is there any darker Porcupine Tree CD's?

Triangle 04-25-2005 09:37 AM

Does anyone know when they're re-releasing Stupid Dream and Lightblub Sun? Or have they already ???

Magicaltroll 04-25-2005 07:59 PM

Does anyone have the new album "Deadwing" or something like that? I've heard its good.

/attempt to make people come to this thread and answer my question up there...

albinoblacksheep 04-26-2005 12:46 PM

I actually really enjoy Deadwing now. After being to the concert, and hearing some really nice live performances of them songs...I especially like Mellatron Scratch, Arriving somewhere but not here, Deadwing, Shallow and Glassarm Shattering

In Absentia deals with a pretty dark theme (Life of a serial Killer)

Triangle 04-26-2005 02:48 PM

Arriving somewhere but not here is so great. Top track. :)

Magicaltroll 04-26-2005 05:27 PM

I'm not really talking about dark themes, just darker music.

Thrillho 04-26-2005 07:11 PM

How is Porcupine Tree cheesy?? They make some of the most honest, genuine music that youll ever hear in todays music scene. Ive yet to hear the new record (sadly) but In Absentia, Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun, Signify and all the way to On the Sunday of Life are exceptional. May 21st Im seeing them for the first time...cant wait

Oh and Magictroll, if your looking for some darker songs check out Strip the Soul, Futile, Dont Hate Me, Dark Matter, Gravity Eyelids, Hatesong, and/or Russia on Ice. Not all of those songs are truely heavy but they all have their dark elements to them. Either way theyre all awesome tracks.
